JT has soooooo many in-depth analyses, and QB thought processes, that he could spend hours just on pre-snap alignments alone, and he understands it so well that he could explain it to someone like me. But what I most appreciate about your videos is how fluent you are at weaving explanation with rolling the tape. You don't bloviate over paused video; you breakdown at different angles with quick rewinds/fast forwards and the move on to the next play; leaving it up to the viewer to go back to get more understanding. @Oklahoma-Dreaming Před 9 měsíci +28

I’ve written it before but right now, Tua has a sub-2.5 Time-to-Throw (TT) number and his Load-to-Release (LTR) - I think Trent Dilfer defines it as “the amount of time from the beginning of the throwing motion until the football leaves the QBs’ hand” (he talks about “patting the football” but QBs such as Garropolo sometimes don’t so it’s a bit fuzzy) - is just north of 0.3, and that’s on his AVERAGE throw. Most QBs have minor differences in LTR depending upon throw type but Tua is consistently quick on his LTR. But Tua’s very accurate on short-to-intermediate throws too. These traits combined with receivers who have ridiculous acceleration and speed as well - not all receivers have both or even either - makes for a lethal combination. Tua drops back, hits his back foot, then pushes off and let’s it rip. It must be hard to stop for any defense.

Yea he doesn’t have a cannon, but you’re right, it wasn’t an arm strength issue.

The most frustrating part about Tuas deep ball is, we have seen him make those throws, he can makes those throws. He needs to step into those passes and flatten out the trajectory on the ball. Everytime he misses short its because he tossed up not a rainbow but a McDonalds Arch. That ball is going to get less distanc3 when its arch is that big. He definitely just lobbed that one up. I think he was thinking "my best guy vs their rookie, fuck it I'm going to try to put this game out of reach now"

I've said for a while now that Tua's deep ball problem is that he doesn't step into his throws. he tries to upper body his deep throws and thats why he is inconsistent and comes up short a lot. if he actually steps AT the target and gets a solid step forward, he wouldn't ever be criticized for arm strength.

For me i think his main issue is his offense is soo timing based and hes probabably used to not having much time over there years where hes thinking the ball has to he out on time because his WRs get there so fast or the line wont hold up. Totally agree with Tua’s issue with the deep ball. It’s not that he doesn’t have the arm to complete them but more he doesn’t get his momentum and feet going forward like a crow hop in baseball to add that little more juice behind the throw. Really that’s the only thing he needs to clean up to become an elite qb.

I vaguely remember that Tom Brady preferred throwing to his left side and had a higher completion percentage there. Maybe most QBs like throwing to the opposite side? It seems to me that when a QB drops back and hits his back foot his hips are in a better position immediately to make a weight transfer and unload. If you throw the other way perhaps you have to turn your hips a bit first. Anyways it seems to me that when Tua throws to the left a lot of times it’s when he bounces outside the pocket to his left to avoid rushers then let’s it rip.

@The QB School - no inside contacts or direct knowledge of the motion but I would call it the "The Brain Scrambler" as the defense is in that mode when it happens. Appreciate the content.

18:52 this stuff is really interesting, thank you for doing it. I just found your channel so I don’t know if you’ve reviewed “hero to disaster QBs” like Gators Tebow vs Broncos Tebow. His apparently atrocious throwing motion & footwork, yet he excelled at Florida. So was was his success deception, was he thrown into action too quick, picked by a bad team for him, or totally broken?

Hey JT- question about Tuas TD to Hill off the fast motion into the flat. At 17:27 you mention that you think the RT should slam the door on the B gap. if the play is designed for Hills flat route to be the first read, is it possible that letting the edge guy go would be more detrimental to this specific call, as he might have a better angle for a deflection or interception? Just curious.

Love these videos, completely spoiled. I hope we find out the name of that motion very soon! I've also noticed Tua does that thing on his deep balls where he doesn't step into the throw, just sinks back and it does him no favors just relying on his arm to carry the ball 100% of the way. 23:14 - Shoutout to Robert Hunt as well for the monster block!

On that play to Berrios, I think Hill knew since he was covered he would go back towards the QB in case he was rushed and had to go off script. I believe there are a lot of reciever options built into this offense, and normally Berrios would've just moved back to the flat, but the corner was in a position where he could take him up the field.

tua and his coaches are constantly talking about how important the timing of his footwork is so i wonder if theres a specific reason he throws that go ball without the hitch like youre pointing out considering he did it twice

  • @dxcheong

  • @MrPetej00
    @MrPetej00 Před 9 měsíci

JT can you or anyone else confirm, yes the hitch could be an issue on his long ball, but could his lead foot also be an issue, If you look at his throws (especially to his left) he isn't pointing his lead foot. Could that lead to distance issues on the long ball? I think he does this more for trying to fool defenses with his head and eyes and quick flip a pass than him having mechanics issues. For example on the short throw to waddle his front foot is pointing down midfield not to the sideline

I'm surprised Tua is still struggling with accurate deep balls when he was potentially the best deep ball thrower I'd ever seen in college. I'm not sure if the hip injury has taken some of his power and it still isn't back or if it is something else, but the regression is slightly disappointing since that used to be such a money thing for him. Staying optimistic it gets back to what it was though.

Bro it's coaching, Tua's being coached to not overthrow his passes, not all of them obviously and he does underthrow some passes that he doesn't mean to but if you haven't noticed a ton of qbs have a few underthrown balls every game, I watch alot of football and for some reason, Tua is the ONLY qb that people ever point it out on.

The deepball to waddle he underthrew, do you believe that shouldve gotten a PI call? Or do you think it was a no call due to it being underthrown by a good margin? Feel like ive seen PIs called on worse underthrown balls.

Both of Tuas underthrows look like hes throwing with his arm and upper body almost off his back leg. If he just steps into or throws through the pass, I believe he could get more into it. Almost as he did with his int. As for the int, im not completely sure him hard looking right, to a side hes not throwing to, is the best way to hold that safety/db as he wasnt defending the far right. A pump fake may have froze that safety or drawn him up, or If Tuas looking left, Hill was open for the first 20 yds of that play and he could have hit him early.
