This worked like a charm. I've had an Elm City 6 Lever for decades. A locksmith told me he couldn't open it. After watching your video I had it opened in short order. And now I have a homemade key. Thank you.
Thanks a lot :). I have to honestly say, that this method can work, but it doesn't always 🙄. I have a second pancake lock which I never got impressioned, even I have tried many many times. I just had to make a 3D bow for this key because I can 😁. 👋🦊
I found one of these old locks on my grandfathers farm, there was a spot under an ancient tree where the early farmers had buried garbage, glass medicine bottles, lots of metal scraps and to my surprise one of these locks! I have held onto it since then, no key at all and no way of knowing how it worked. Its a fair bit more beat up than yours, I think whoever threw it away had tried to break it, there are some hammer marks on one side but as near as I can tell its in working order, these things were built very solidly. Gonna try to make one of these keys for mine, I would love to see it actually open as I have had it since the mid 80's. Thanks for the very clearly explained video!
I just received a Champion 6-Lever lock with other items I purchased at an auction. It is closed and has no key. I was not familiar with this type of lock and enjoyed your tutorial. I look forward to attempting your method since this is a lovely and hefty, little lock.
I received three of these locks in a bulk lot I bought at auction. I wasn't quite sure what to make of them - but then I found your video. Now I understand the internal mechanics and how to make a key. Fantastic. Thank you!
Sounds awesome :). Yes they are interesting locks, I think I have 2 of these. One is very easy to open and one does not want at all ;D...so don't be sad if you don't get them open...sometimes it works, sometimes not. Have fun :).
Thank you very much :). I got the nails yesterday evening and tried to make a key this morning for the first time. I actually wanted to use a 3D printed nail holder, but it turned out very quickly, that wood works much much better :). I did cut off the nail tops, as they are really a little on the short side (40 or 50mm is much better), but the tool market wanted 30 euros for the longer ones...and I had no use for additional 4988 nails haha, so I took the small package with 1 3/16th length. The hardest thing to get right is the tension you put on with the clamps, so that the nails are not too tight and not too loose in for impressioning and of course some patience is needed ;D. And you get a pretty good cramp in the hand from pulling the shackle ;), but the success makes it worth :).
Thanks a lot :D. I never thought that it would work that nice ;). I'm happy when it helps you :). Speaks for the lock when it's still working after such a long time :D. Btw, if you try this, don't oil the lock, it helps when it's levers are binding a bit.
Thanks a lot Lock Noob :). The thanks goes also to the guys who invented this method :), I'm only using their technique ;D. A video from the LockButcherShop channel helped me really a lot to understand how it worked :), it's worth a look. I wish I had gotten longer nails yesterday, but hey, worked anyway ;D.
Cool. Someone has been watching the LockButcherShop. ;D Got to love the sharing of knowledge and experience. It makes us all so much stronger and more capable. :)
Well, a certain fox might have been watching the LBS videos up and down ;) to be able to make a key haha. I was really happy that I could find such high quality information, this really helped me and so I wanted to spread it even more. It is incredible what modern locksporters are able to do and have experienced due to such a great community and sharing :).
Jep and he showed also a method for measuring the depths of the lever cuts ;D (actually 2). But impressioning works well :), at least at this lock. No idea what happens, if a spring is broken (well, then you have to take it apart anyway ;D) or all is gummed.
That is really awesome to hear that it helped you Tom 😃👍 :). It really does not always work, I have 2 pancake locks and one I never got open, whatever I tried (well they are very old..so it could even be broken inside...). Have the nicest greetings :) 😊👋🦊
Thank you very much Monkey Lockpicks :). Well, basically I did what other did to make a key for one, but I felt it would be nice to share anyway ;), as there are not too many videos about these pancake locks :).
I think you did great, I haven't seen other videos about this before so your video is full of new things for me. I think I'm going to check the other ones soon, anyway this is still a great one!
Thank you Robert :). I recently bought a second pancake lock which is probably even older, but so far I have not managed to make a key, even with longer nails. It's not always working...but worth a try :D.
Thanks a lot buddy :D, really happy you like it :). There are only a couple of videos about this, so I'm happy I can add one more :). I wouldn't say "picked", it's more impressioned ;). Even they are so old, I think you can find them sometimes in the US for an affordable price (and a ton more for one with a working key hehe ;D), so if you can, try it out, it is really a cool experience :D. I wouldn't be able to show something like this without the support of friends sending me such interesting locks ;).
I've been at this all day and my nails aren't taking on the bitting - there's not much play in my shackle, so maybe the levers aren't setting open? I'd love any help you could offer, thank you
Thanks a lot for watching LPP :D. So now we've learned booth (or even many more) how to make a key 😃 ;). It was very new for me too. There is also a measuring method, but the impression works nice, at least as long as the lock is in working condition :).
redcatimaging once I get some blanks, I have three disk locks (pin tumblers) and the original pins with my first 83 (Schlage keyway) I want to try and impression 🙀 but it looks much easier with your pancake lock! 😃
I failed in impressioning a pintumbler padlock...(Abus 85/40) , that was mostly because I only got steel keyblanks (different brands, but all not good for impressioning). Way too hard for a beginner :). I did break 6+ keys and then gave up ;D.
Thank you very much Leon :). I have seen one of these locks some months before, but did forget about it, even I was really interested. Now Casey really surprised me with it beeing in the package :D, what a cool old lock :D. I have a couple of old GDR pushlocks, but they work a little different and can be destroyed very easy when trying to pick, so they are just collectibles.
Very much appreciated Bill my friend :). A video from LockButcherShop really helped me to get a key done :). I actually have some keyblanks too from Casey (a teacher for locksmiths and security things), but didn't have the time to cut it (I'm also not good on the dremel ;D) and I also think, the nail key looks even better hehe ;).
Thanks a lot for watching my friend :). I was overwhelmed when I got that lock :). Got me the chance to work on another type of locks :D and it's beautiful as heck ;). That were my first ever impressioned keys :), I did two, one this morning and one in the video :).
Thank you very much Steel Pinnings :D. I'm still not sure where I did see such a lock the first time some months ago...I think it was Bobby, you or someone else of the US lock community ;). I never thought I would get one of these and it was really great fun to make a working key :).
That is very cool buddy. I have a champion 4 Lever and Champion 6 Lever Pancake lock in my collection with no keys and would love to see them pop open. Really must try your tutorial when I get time ;o))))
I will try to link the video to the forum too ;D. Couldn't reach it for some days and now I had no time, but will do :). This is one method (there are two more). It should work, but needs a little practice ;). And, definitely get longer nails than 30mm. GL buddy and just drop me a note if you need help :).
Yep, got to give it a try as want to pop the old girls open... Pardon the pun LOL!!!!! By way ukls forum was down for a bit due to upgrades so I could not get on.
Very good! I assume you used six nails because there are six levers! How did you know the nails you used were the correct width? I would have tried the key again before I glued the handle on. Well done 👍
Thank you :). I bought the nails the shop had :D, not much to choose from. They seemed okay. It was very long ago that I made the key...the method worked relatively good for this lock and absolutely not for another one. 😊🖐
Great work buddy, did you watch LBS and how he made a key (it's very similar to yours)🍺😎😎👍👍🤔🤔🔓😉👍 There had to be a 3D element in there🦊👍👍😉😉😘,thanks as always for sharing your experiences 😍😍😍😎
Of course I did watch LBS's great video series on these 😍 ;D, so no wonder that's similar ;). Really great stuff and very interesting how he took such a lock apart (even I would never do it) and how it looks from the inside. A lot learned today :). Yeah haha, I actually wanted to make it fully 3D, but the wood worked better at the end ;). I like the key even more than the original keyblanks I got, so probably won't cut them at the moment :). Designing and printing the keypart took not long, still cool to be able to make things on the fly ;D. It's part of the fun to share experiences 😉. I would have shared on ukls too, but couldn't reach the website all day, but will try another day. Have a nice evening buddy :), 🦊.
Thank you anyway for watching. It is sad to say that it does not always work...I have two pancake locks and one never opened whatever I tried. There are other methods, try these, good luck :).
No haha ;D. Just have a look, I can not remember if I have seen another tutorial on YT or did read an article back in the days when I was playing with these locks...Another method is trying to feel for the gates on the push levers with a special formed feeler needle and adjust the depth of the impression tool according to what you measure there..., can't remember the 3rd method. 😉✌
Excellent job. Clearly explained step by step. Keep up the great work. Thank you very much.
This worked like a charm. I've had an Elm City 6 Lever for decades. A locksmith told me he couldn't open it. After watching your video I had it opened in short order. And now I have a homemade key. Thank you.
Very nice method for impressioning and making a key. The 3D key holder was a bonus.
Thanks a lot :). I have to honestly say, that this method can work, but it doesn't always 🙄. I have a second pancake lock which I never got impressioned, even I have tried many many times. I just had to make a 3D bow for this key because I can 😁. 👋🦊

That is a cool find Bright Argyle :). I have to admit, that this technique not always works, but it is worth a try for sure :). Good luck :). 😊👍🦊

Thank you so much for making this video I just bought a similar lock and I can’t wait to try to make my own key!!!
Have fun and good luck :). Remember it does not always work, so don't be sad, wish you the best :).
I found a lock almost just like this today! Gonna try this method to have it keyed. 😄
very nice! my friend Bob Dix makes a tool for picking these locks. Not cheap but his craftsmanship is excellent!
Thanks a lot Jeff :). I just looked up his tool and found an article about the dix-pix :D. Pretty nice with the adjustable screws :).
very well done. nice impression tool.
Thank you very much :). I got the nails yesterday evening and tried to make a key this morning for the first time. I actually wanted to use a 3D printed nail holder, but it turned out very quickly, that wood works much much better :).

That was very interesting - thank you for showing us this impressioning method on a beautiful old lock. Great work my friend.
Thank you a lot for watching Potti :). I'm happy that it was interesting for you and it really is a cool experience :).
Very nice setup bud! That was a great tutorial on how to make a key for that type of lock! Very helpful indeed my friend!
Thanks a lot :D. I never thought that it would work that nice ;). I'm happy when it helps you :). Speaks for the lock when it's still working after such a long time :D. Btw, if you try this, don't oil the lock, it helps when it's levers are binding a bit.
What an ingenious use of the nails and wood to Impression the lock. Brilliant work :-)
Thanks a lot Lock Noob :). The thanks goes also to the guys who invented this method :), I'm only using their technique ;D. A video from the LockButcherShop channel helped me really a lot to understand how it worked :), it's worth a look. I wish I had gotten longer nails yesterday, but hey, worked anyway ;D.
Love that lock, that's the first time I've seen one. Your idea for impressioning a key is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

hehe, sharing is caring. :) I think PapaGleb has done it as well. The more the merrier. :D

Nice looking lock and a fsntastic key. Looks good with the 3D printed handle.
Thanks a lot for watching Baldi :). I love that 3D key :).
Thanks very much I did as you said and it worked. I am real thrilled it just took two tries once I had the tension right
That is really awesome to hear that it helped you Tom 😃👍 :). It really does not always work, I have 2 pancake locks and one I never got open, whatever I tried (well they are very old..so it could even be broken inside...). Have the nicest greetings :) 😊👋🦊

Thanks a lot :D.
That drawing this guy did looks like a scene in the beginning of a show called "IN LIVING COLOR" from the early 90's
No idea of this show, but it sounds funny that it seems to look similar haha ;). Thanks for watching mate and greetings from "this guy" 😉👋🦊
Very nice!
Thank you Robert :). I recently bought a second pancake lock which is probably even older, but so far I have not managed to make a key, even with longer nails. It's not always working...but worth a try :D.
Cool solution to a tricky problem
Awesome! I've never seen one of these picked or impressioned on CZcams before. Keep up the great work. :D

Very cool! Thank you for sharing this 😃😃👍 I've always wondered about the keys or how to get into those locks!

Very good video. I enjoyed watching.
Thank you very much Ratlock :D.
Really cool and interesting video , very enjoyable thanks.

very well done my friend!😊🔨
What would I do without your nice wood 😊 ;), comes in handy so many times :). Thanks a lot my friends :D.
I sent putting pressure on the hasp making it harder to pick? Usually any extra pressure adds to the degree of difficulty?
That is very cool buddy. I have a champion 4 Lever and Champion 6 Lever Pancake lock in my collection with no keys and would love to see them pop open. Really must try your tutorial when I get time ;o))))

@@redcatimaging You should have given LBS credit in your video.
Thank you sir.. but where can I get the pins?
In the hardware store or online.
I have followed instructions and tried to replicate it. I cannot get my lock open. I am using 18gauge just like you.
I tried this and it didn't work. Very annoying
Thank you anyway for watching. It is sad to say that it does not always work...I have two pancake locks and one never opened whatever I tried. There are other methods, try these, good luck :).
redcatimaging I would like to send it to you, so u can open it and relay it. Hehheh
