- Friday Night Videos is an American music video show that was broadcast on NBC from July 29, 1983, to May 24, 2002. It was the network's attempt to capitalize on the emerging popularity of music videos as seen on MTV. In its early years, MTV was still a phenomenon that only a minority of Americans actually could see in their homes, as there were many areas not yet serviced by cable television (particularly rural areas and inner-city neighborhoods), and not all cable television providers offered MTV at first. Friday Night Videos took advantage of that fact and proved to be the next best thing for many viewers. While it primarily showcased music videos by popular top 40 acts of the day, unlike its cable rival, Friday Night Videos tended to offer more variety. As such, it featured artists from the genres of pop, rock, R&B, and rap. Let's travel back to 1983

Friday Night Videos brings back childhood memories of staying up late to watch but waking up early for Saturday Morning cartoons, those days of the 80's are missed.
100% How was I so tired for school on weekdays, yet Saturday mornings totally fine on 4 hours sleep? What kept us awake? Must’ve been the sugary cereal!
Friday Night Videos and the Atari 5200 Classic!!
I also have a fondness for the first half of the 80s because as a teenager staying up late on the weekends, sometimes all night, was fun. Even if your family didn’t have cable television, there was plenty to watch on network TV. Friday Night Videos wasn’t the only TV program showing music videos late at night. I remember there was a local PBS channel in Denver that showed music videos as well. Now all that’s on local late night TV, which I haven’t watched in years, are lackluster talk shows, news, and infomercials. Saturday morning cartoons are also long gone ☹️
True. By the time afternoon Wrestling came on. I’d nod off. Everytime
Yes, those were the days. I also loved Night Flight, and Night Tracks. Then eventually we got MTv and loved Sunday nights. They had some British comedies, and later on they had my favorite MTv show “120 Minutes”. For awhile they played the British alternative video ahow “Snub”. And “the Tube” with Paula Yates and Jools Holland. All those British shows really influenced my musical taste, and I had to start buying “imports” to get the best music I could.
Friday Night Videos was the GREATEST!!! If you were there, then you know.
I was there, saw a lot of great music videos on Friday Night Videos. My teenage years in the early 1980s.
Right up there with Gorge Michael and the Sports Machine
Exactly. When streaming wasn’t a thing and you actually had to wait in anticipation to see the latest music videos
being a teen growing up in the 80's... Friday night videos was a treat.
Especially for people like me who grew up in a small town and only had basic cable because we couldn't get any ota signals. So this was a life saver!😂
We only had 2channels perfection feeds and signals from around the World in the 80s sometimes we had to bang the TV to get it tho
NEVER missed and episode!
When you didn't have MTV, you stayed up late on Friday Nights to watch FNV!!! And then watched Saturday Morning Videos! Thank you Mone!!!
your welcome
YEP!!!!!!!!!! I was a pre-teen during this music video era, and we had neither MTV nor a VCR, so I basically had to stay up late and watch it every week. Just found your YT channel tonight-I have a lot of catching up to do!!
That was me, I lived in the country, and I could get Friday Night Videos; MTV was a pipe-dream, nobody had it. Thank you for the memories.
I had MTV but still loved FNV.
Yeah!
I was 12 years old. In 83. Loved. Friday night videos. I'm 52 now still listen to 80s music. Be 53 in April. The 80s music ruled. Still does. For me
Wow, I'll be 53 on April 2nd. I was 12 years old when this timeless treasure had came out. I still listen to 80s music as well. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I was 12 in 1983 also, remember staying up watching Friday Night Videos to!! Can I go back please!!!!
Well we're all about the same age then. It's actually my birthday today (3/25). Happy Birthday to us.
@@FunkyMonk4Life HAPPY AWEWOME BIRTHDAY🥰🍾🥂
The 80s rules 😊
Different world back then, we all had a chance to be something...
and according to President Reagan "It's morning again"
There was so much hope for the future 🥲
@@patiencecaso very true
Indeed
Yes, older lol
I think most folks here like the commercials as much as they like the videos 😂😂😂
Yes absolutely !!
Haha yup
❤Well Said !!!
10 years old. No cable. This was it! My 19 year old son is a huuuge fan of classic rock, 80's, and 90's! Thank goodness for us Gen X'ers!
Friday Night Videos, a pizza, and a 2 liter of Coke was the perfect Friday night! Thanks for posting :)
Exactly!!!!
Soda!?😂
Yummy Coke refreshing when it tasted good like anything and everything in the 80s
Cut it out. You making me wish I had a time machine😊
I was part of the Pepsi Generation 😂
Please, if anyone has a spare time machine I need to get back to the early 1980's ASAP.
I don't think it's said enough, but thanks to all the British bands that came and left their mark during this time! Incredible.
I love how you set it off immediately with one of the GOAT 80's songs! The Human League still slaps!!
Nice but few people tried to stay at home on Friday nights. Glad I joined the service!
Playing arcade games, doing odd jobs for cash, riding my 2-stroke dirt bike and Friday Night Videos with the bro's, life was good in the '80's!
alright stop bragging, some of us only had Snappers.
@@cyberprompt Lol, I got suspended from school with those..
For those to young to know. There are no words to describe how good it was back then
💯 percent correct
My parents had cable in 1983 but it was on the "big color set" in the family room. My friends from school ( I was a Senior in the Fall of 1983) would come over and we'd veg out in front of the TV all day watching MTV. I had a small black and white set in my room and would watch Friday Night Videos and SNL away from the rest of the family. It was great, I felt like a real grown-up because I could watch Monday Night Football in peace.
Thanks for posting this and making me feel young again. I just wish I could wash the color out and pretend it's 1983 again.
Turbulent times for me but this got me through it every week after school
Sounds like great memories
Well, let’s just agree to agree….on everything you said!!!
Class of 1984?
Yup.@@letshaveacuppa_official
Graduated that year, and I remembered the Friday Videos. It was normal back then, so much optimism and people got along. Was a great time to be alive.
Thanks so much for the flashback. I was 22 back then. I practically would give anything to go back to those days. life had so much promise back then.
I think this show was on for 1 or 2 hours.
My senior year in high school graduated in 1983....SHOUT OUT TO CLASS OF 1983.🎉🎉🎉🎉😂
This and Night Tracks on TBS was great. The 80’s seemed liked such simpler times
I never liked music when I was a kid, but now I can appreciate how creative and unique 80s music is.
I second .. I hated the eighties then but now I live for it
OMG I'm 11 again.
Ha ha, my man!!!!! Bringing back the 80s!!! Best era ever, thank you reminding us that we were once young too. 😊😊😊😊😊
We didn't have cable inmy huse growing up. FNV made me feel like I was part of the MTV world all my friends were in
We had MTV but FNV and Night Flight were still required viewing.
The commercials are real throwbacks. Juan Valdez and Sean Connery, John McEnroe and Q-Bert
Man childhood memories bro.😢😢😢
Who knew that in the future I would be out & about with these great videos in the palm of my hand 🤯😵💫🤯
I'm a 13 year old kid again!! The Motels ❤❤❤❤
1983 was my favorite year as a kid largely because of the music. This episode showcases that. I love it.
I was 17 in 1983. From 81 to 83 was the best music to me maybe 84. But it started changing around 86,87 to house and techno music which i didn't care for. Thanks for the upload.
Agreed
Seriously ‘81-84ish were some exceptionally of the best years for music.
1980 was a mix of country and contemporary rock.
Techno was 81-83, burned out fairly fast.
Big hair bands took over for awhile.
Then the 90s became grunge college music. I jumped off the train then.
1966 here. So much fun!
83 great . 84 even better.
A time before pop/rock went down the toilet
Ah the memories. This and USA's UP! All Night. Kids today will bever know.
Thank you for this.
14:26- 40 years later and this song still slaps. Thank you for this; you’re doing the Lord’s work.
A classic.
28:24 still love The Fixx.
I don't know what's better... the videos, or the commercials!! Webster?? Really?? 🤣🤣
I was 14 and definitely remember these when I got home after a shift as a dishwasher on Friday evenings- making big plans about what I was gonna do with the boys on Saturday hopefully meeting up with some girls at the record store, arcade, or pizzeria!
sounds good
Ah my teen years in the 80’s was so damn cool.
Friday October 14 1983, in case you were wondering. I recall the broadcast was simulcast in stereo on radio. I still have an audio recording from that night. "Here's Styx... with Mister Roboto."
The visual clue for me was the 2 models wearing Orioles and Phillies jerseys around the 5:02 mark. Knowing my MLB history, that put this particular episode around October of 1983. Crazy to think that remains the last Orioles team to win it all!
My show during those years happened to air on ABC. A little network gem called RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT, hosted by America's loudest whisperer... Jack Palance!😂❤
@@JoseMorales-lw5nt 14:05 They announce a special edition show "Two weeks from tomorrow" Saturday Oct. 29.
I have very clear memories of this episode, which was aired this same week in September 1983. KISS premiering Lick It Up without makeup was a big deal for me so I watched this when it aired (I didn't have MTV to see it there first). I remember seeing the Bryan Adams video for the first time that night too, which became a favorite as well. Really cool!
I watched Friday Night Videos religiously! It was fun being a teen in the 80's! Thanks for the memories! 💖👍🏽
your welcome
safety dance was my shh
It came on in the car the other day and I could see the video clearly in my head ❤ great song
If MTV actually aired videos like this all day long now, the millennials, and Gen Z would realize how good the music was back then!
Crazy seeing "A Boy and His Dog" being re-released about 9 yrs after it came out... and a year before folks went apeshit over Miami Vice
Those were the times...my long gone teen days - and those songs were part of that. Greetings from Brazil - Abraços para todos os adolescentes dos anos 1980 - que convivemos com os perigos da guerra fria e da bomba atômica, infelizmente, 40 anos depois, uma vez mais isso nos causa temor.
I recently watched High School U.S.A. on Tubi... 5:45 mark... was a cool Lil movie. I loved back then when most of the stars from the network would get together for a Sunday night or Monday night movie. They don't do that these days. Friday Night Videos were for those of us who didn't have cable.
I like the old ads, but I hate the CZcams ads. Funny how that works...
Amazing how viewing and listening to Friday Night Videos makes me slowly drift into my youth.
Up late for FNV then up on Saturday morning for some Cap'n Crunch, roller derby and Kung Fu Theater.
I tried so hard to stay awake for this show but almost always fell asleep.
Its such a shame you don't see this stuff anymore
We didnt get cable in my part of NYC until 1990. This was our MTV.
They don't make shows like "Manimal" anymore. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's a positive or a negative.
If you didn't have MTV - and who had MTV? - Friday Night Videos was a real treat back in the day. Videos were fun, they were different, they were worth staying up late for. The Chuck Scarborough spot shows this was from WNBC in NYC - the station I watched then.
I remember so many nights as a teen, nodding off in front of the TV after a long day at school--but all it would take was a song like In a Big Country to wake me up and bring me to my feet--dancing across the living room.:)
I was first married in 83. This is what we would watch every Friday night, and invite friends over and order pizza. Fun times!! Our small town did not offer MTV back then so this is how we got our music video fix. :)
I was 13 when this aired. MTV reigned supreme but FNVs was nice to have when we didn't have cable. Today...I prefer watching the commercials over the music videos.
the Fyxx....One of the Best Bands of 80s!!!!
Fixx.
Hello from Vancouver, BC Canada ... the home of Bryan Adams ! The 80's was an awesome time in music.
😮 wow … brings back so many memories as a kid back then
Finally! I get to watch Friday Night Videos! I would fall asleep right before they started, and wake up as they were ending! I would get so mad at myself! I miss the 80's! Being an adult is horrible 😫 😂😂😂
You guys realize after we are gone, NO ONE will have lived without CONSTANT dopamine distraction/addiction of phones, etc.... lord help um when it crashes
I'm 53 yrs old and these videos slap just as hard now as they did 40 yrs ago.
I didn't have cable so this was my mtv i would put the tape recorder to the tv speaker to tape this. Bring back lots of good memories! 1983 was the best year for me as a kid got my first kiss, the baseball team i was on won the town's championship(i played 3rd base like my favorite player mike schmidt), the sixers swept the lakers, and on the last day of school i go to the theater to see return of the jedi.
With commercials too? I'm in heaven! Thanks Mone.
Dominos pizza and 10 cokes that were only 10 cents each back then.
A case of Tennessee Whiskey and a bowl of chili
A case of Tennessee Whiskey and a bowl of chili
Thanks for this… just… thanks… 51 yrs and needing to remember life that wasn’t crazy and home was warm and carefree
Watching this on Friday on the big smart TV in the living room, my daughter sleeping next to me, her moms cat snuggled with her. Work from home done for the week. Rainy and windy out. In a shit world, there is such a thing as peace.
Mone you improve the quality of our lives with this stuff as you can tell by the comments... just a time capsule of great memories every single time you put stuff out... much thanks!
Wow, thank you!
@@MoneMediaseriously.
Another one of these FNV (you probably posted it) I’m almost certain I remember watching when it first aired in 1984.
It featured The Cars “You Might Think” and it was such a surreal video I remembered it vividly.
Wow does this take me back….. I would do anything to go back to the 80s. I was 13 to 23 during that decade. The music was so great and so was tv….and even the commercials were great too and I loved staying up on Friday night to watch videos and getting up Saturday morning to watch cartoons. I think I spent most of the weekend in front of the TV to be honest …..switching back-and-forth between MTV, cartoons, American bandstand……… on and on ….and of course I’d go outside to play with my friends and you didn’t have to come home until after dark! Oh….. and maybe get in a visit to the local mall and go to the arcade to play Pac-Man or play Atari at home
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Welcome!
We taped eps of FNV on Beta.
This takes me BACK!!!!
I love the old commercials.
I feel like I was transported in a time machine to my junior year of high school sitting next to my high school sweetheart.
Ich brauche jetzt eine zeitmaschine nach 1983 wann ich war 4 jahre alt.
Take me back!
They didn’t show NBC Fritag Nacht Videos in Germany did they?!?!
@@RandallJennings ich weiß nicht
1983..it just took off from there. So good
I guess ive never really paid attention to the lyrics of “Mr. Roboto” before, what a weird ass song.
its apart of a story line from the album.
This was always a treat to watch this because we had no cable what so ever!!
AWESOME upload! We’re STILL ALIVE in 2024! 👀😯
😅
Hope your video doesn’t get taken down ©️
I'm d-loading this before it does
dont see it how it can ALL the videos are available on CZcams
I still get the same excitement like I did when I was 12 years old watching these videos and this format.😊
If you didn’t have cable this was it for you. Seems like yesterday, how time flies
The 80’s continue to be a very interesting time great music takes me back to my youth.Doesn’t get any better.
July 1983 my 1st time ever watching music videos in 2024 still do
I watched FNV b/c I didn’t have cable back then. Looking at the commercials from that era is like traveling back in a Time Machine. I especially liked the one from McDonalds featuring a young Herschel Walker who had just signed with the USFL that year. Also, it’s nostalgic to see commercials for brands that no longer exist today such as the one from Quasar.
Those were the days of the best times ever!! The music was everything and still is..thank you for these memories!!
I'm not from the States but this is awesome Hall Of Fame all Songs with Videos of anything and everything deserves that in the 80s and beats nearly anything and everything now or the last 30 or so years since 80s finished and 90s started.Following on from MTV even success of Elephant Parts and Pop Clips with Mike Nesmith thank him also creativity that was starting in the 80s.This island country been in we had Radio With Pictures and Ready To Roll Music Shows if i can remember maybe a couple of others. What a lineup here love Mr Roboto merge all elements of genres and 80s vibeness. Can harp on to be blessed and part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s atmosphere
The 80's was the last decade before internet and then shortly after that we got smart phones. It was such a special time maybe that's why we keep coming back to experience it. We were experimenting with wild hair styles, clothes, and the best part - we could not get enough of those new and improved synthesizers which created some of the best music I've ever heard.
36:07 chicken almost gets it.
I think I preferred KISS with their makeup instead of without.
Love these, thanks for posting them! Love my 80s, still after all these years, I can watch these all night long! Nothing like the 80s, great music, great bands, great athletes in all sports, great movies, video games, rock n wrestling, tv shows, toys like he man, transformers, gi Joe, thundercats, mtv, the fast food, dukes of Hazzard, chips, a team, knight Rider, man, I can go all night with this! 🤘👍
The synth music is so unique
True...still. ❤
My 2nd child was born in 1983 my daughter Stacie kept us up often, lol, so id put this on quietly while feeding her. Great memories.
Miss Friday night videos and tbs night tracks, and of course video music box
Just off work at Domino's fresh out of HS , living out in the sticks in a trailer with no cable or satellite, FNV was GOLD for me
The commercials oh man, I actually remember some of the jingles.
Trans-Am: turbo wheels, not the engine. lol. and oh man, Big Country, ripped up the hs dance floor with that one.
I can dance to this 😊
By the time ⏲️ Friday night videos left the airwaves, MTV stopped playing music videos so Friday Night Video was the only place to see music videos in America unless you had enough money for digital cable where you could see music videos on MTV 2.
brings back so many childhood memories. My dad and I would stay up Friday night to watch this
