Stephen Ritz is a South Bronx teacher/administrator. With the help of extended student and community family they have grown over 25,000 pounds of vegetables in the Bronx while generating extraordinary academic performance. His Bronx classroom features the first indoor edible wall in NYC DOE which routinely generates enough produce to feed 450 students healthy meals and trains the youngest nationally certified workforce in America. Stephen has consistently moved attendance from 40% to 93% daily, helped fund/create 2,200 youth jobs, captured the US EPA Award for transforming mindsets and landscapes in NYC, recently won the ABC Above and Beyond Award, helped earn his school the first ever Citywide Award of Excellence from the NYC Strategic Alliance for Health and attributes these results directly to growing vegetables in school. His speech at Columbia University, "From Crack to Cucumbers," along with the release of a You-Tube Video (Urban Farming NYC) resulted in a national following including an invite to the White House Garden. Dedicated to harvesting hope and cultivating minds, Stephen dreams of opening a nationally replicable Career Technical Education public school in the poorest Congressional District in America rooted in urban agriculture, green and sustainable initiatives. Tears in my eyes. tears of joy mind you. This man is a truly inspirational!!! What energy, what conviction.
Amazing!! My daughter runs the school lunch program in their small western Colorado community and has managed to get most of the processed crap out of their diets. Still a long way to go but now she's networking and finding funding for their school's unused greenhouse to get it back up and running and adding an aquaponic section. The kids will be the workforce and will be part of their science curriculum and it will lower the produce budget for the school -- it's a win-win for everyone!!
Congratulations. You took a very innovative idea and used it to teach the kids work ethic and healthy eating. You did the exact same thing Newt was criticized for, you just did it with a PC subject.
You took a school project and made it sustainable, teachable and beneficial to the community.
Stephen Ritz is an inspirational genius. The Bronx will be a better place
What a touching video! Love it! We need more people like him in our communities!!!!
BTW...why would anyone give him a thumbs down?? They are cray-cray....
+Thuy-Linh Pollack Thumbs down on a video like this would come from individuals who may not see the value that Urban Farming can bring. Their loss and our gain. From what I can see the discussion thread for this presentation is dominated by *positive* responses. Let's try to keep it that way.
13:24 best quote ever:
So here, and at a time where we´ve gone from the audacity to hope to hope for some audacity, I urge u to do something.
Wow, so much energy and passion! love him!
+Mariah Wadsworth I love Stephen's Energy as well. So glad that I found this presentation. Now I have a chance to snapshot this resource in OneNote. One of the best presentations I have seen in a long time on Urban Gardening.
William Ellerbe yes, he is amazing; I wish I had had a gardening program in school.
THIS IS THE WAY to fight Drugs, Crime, Jail, Domestic violence, Health, Reunite families again, show Love, but most of all; To hElp sAve our ONLY plaNet! Way to go Bronx! SI SE PUEDE :-)

love this guy. met him this weekend
Stephen's presentation in Traverse City was phenomenal.
thank you for making a difference - and caring enough too!!!
THIS MAN WILL TAKE US INTO THE 2012 TRANSFORMATION!!!!!!
I agree with what you're saying. I'm just saying that these kids have to feel inspired (motivated) before they will even attempt to better themselves and feel motivated enough to learn the other arts and academics. I just thought this was brilliant how this teacher's ideas reached that spark in these kids minds - kids that were maybe thinking they'll never be anything. The beginning of success for them is to be inspired by something - and for these kids, it was this teacher's ideas.
Thank you for making our eyes open.
I'm from the Bronx, thank you.
Remarkable!!!!!!!! Thank you for the inspiration!!!!
I really love this. Great guy!
Very inspiring. Thank you!

Wow. Fantastic!
It was interesting. Thank you.
awesome guy.
He came to my school!
you are precious
It's a two way street. As more of us grow veggies ourselves, then less and less will buy from the food shops causing a financial catastrophe for food shops and rural farms. But I'm not buying lettuce anymore, I'm growing it, and thats the future!
Wow, so impressed.
Why this is not in every single schools curriculum around the world is beyond me.
This guys is so cool.
wow. shared and tweeted!
Awesome
Esta Muy Bieen I Love It Mr Ritz

Bravo sir!
@linagee I see your point but don't you think it's nice to have green spaces and stuff within the industrial and residential areas in the cities and towns? I think that you have a point about cost but still...it's worth it to have nice looking cities?
9:03.....Tipi's?? But this is the east coast! Theyre supposed to be Elm bark longhouses!

Good talk though.
Stephen - I want you to be a guest on Good and Green Radio! YOU are such an inspiration & the work you are doing is sooooo Good and Green; inspiring everyone to live a Positively Sustainable Lifestyle. Please contact me on Good and Green Radio on Facebook.
I hope this plan becomes a reality.
Awesome! This should be the model for all of the United States schools! Lets get our citizens off of junk processed food and eating yummy produce!
wouldn't open.
Howie Mandell your twin is calling, Crack it does a body good.
ahhhhh hes friends w majora carter
Teach ten children to learn your message to teach other children to teach them the message and to Ten billion others each .( ten billion people thanks 🌎😇
These kids have teachers that try to teach them those things first -- trust me. They ain't listening. They're not interested! Teach them to do FUN things that better the world and they will be inspired. They're not clapping to a slavemaster....get that fucking chip off your shoulder!
I love his passion. But the are many reasons for things, just not "why not". Why not try to teach kids agriculture and to build a farm in your backyard? Why not try to kids engineering and manufacture a Chevrolet in your backyard? Some places are better suited than others depending on the task. Last summer I spent $95 for what was a jar of bad salsa.
Love what he's done for those kids. Just be realistic.
What an inspiring video! I blogged about it on IBOtoolbox, which is a wonderful site for independent business owners.
Can this be done with teaching building-ways to build?. asking billionaires to collaborate with your messages. Maybe philanthropist. Thanks.
Wow, this lecture is full of dangerous superior, inferior stereotyping; talk about bigoted conditioning as the unintended side effect of charity. Although easily disguised through fast talk, Stephen Ritz constantly associates characteristics such as poor, immigrant, grafiti making, over procreating, homeless, can't be "white," with mostly Mexican but also other Latin Americans. What is more, although the exact word is "brownfield," Mr. Ritz quickly spews out this list―black-field, brownfield, toxic-waste-field, battlefield―thus associating toxic waste and violence with the terms, black and brown. This same insidious, subliminal technique was cleverly used by the Nazis to grow bigotry against the Jews. So, although, on the surface, this lecture appears to be about a helpful NGO that is addressing the needs of the poor, dig deeper, because deeper is where the danger lies; deeper is the root-cause of bigotry; deeper are the subliminal bigoted associations that are insidiously conditioning the minds of powerful men like Donald Trump.
Love it...!!!♠
Si se poede...!!!
