  • HELSTON CORNWALL - A historic town at the northern tip of the Lizard Peninsula. Steeped in history, boasting scenic beauty, and pulsating with a vibrant culture, Helston beckons visitors with a delightful blend of experiences.
Helston's story unfolds like a captivating novel. Saxon influences from the 6th century mingle with the legacy of King John, who bestowed a charter upon the town in 1201, making it Cornwall's second oldest. The 18th century witnessed a surge in prosperity due to the tin mining boom, solidifying Helston's role as a stannary town - a crucial hub for miners to trade their precious finds. The arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century ushered in a new era, transforming Helston into a popular tourist destination and the well-deserving title of "gateway to the Lizard Peninsula."
Today, Helston seamlessly blends its rich heritage with a modern and friendly atmosphere. Bustling main streets lined with a delightful mix of local shops and historical attractions like the Helston Museum keep the town's past alive. But Helston isn't merely a museum piece; it's a town that thrives in the present. Evidence of this contemporary spirit can be found in the lively cafes lining the streets, offering a taste of the local culinary scene, and the exciting events that take place throughout the year.
Every May, Helston explodes in a riot of color and joyous celebration during Flora Day, one of the oldest and most famous May Day festivities in the UK. Houses and shops shed their ordinary appearances, adorned with vibrant floral displays that symbolize the renewal of spring. The air thrums with music as couples weave through the streets, entering shops and houses to perform an ancient dance - a symbolic act of banishing the winter's darkness and ushering in the light of spring. This age-old tradition, meticulously passed down through generations, paints Helston in a truly unique light.
Beyond the captivating town center, a treasure trove of experiences awaits in Helston and its surrounding areas. Here's a glimpse into the top ten must-sees:
