Back in the nineties I became obsessed with P.J. Harvey. Musically, there is no one quite like her. "Down By The Water" has a creepy, unsettling, almost sinister vibe to it, but is also beautiful, mysterious, and hypnotic. It takes a special talent to get all that into one song. This is what real art looks like.

I actually liked some of her stuff back late 90s, and had all but forgotten her until Peaky Blinders took on a lot of her music for the series. Then I was like "Oh wait!! Freaking PJ Harvey?? Totally forgot about her!!"

Sheila Da Gig is another good one. I'm probably spelling it wrong. I'm 54 years old and from Canada. I loved shoegaze back in the day and I still do. There is a wonderful CZcamsr from Guangzhou China who goes by the name Stella's Encounter. She gets shoegazer, 4AD, and more recent Chinese and German bands who were slightly inspired by that sort of music

Yeah, did she kill her daughter after her daughter had sex under that bridge? Did she find he daughter dead under the bridge? "Just like my daughter" did she find another girl who resembled her daughter or was this her daughter who she didn't consider to be her daughter anymore? She took her home but alive or dead? Why does she act so seductive in this video, is she the big fish hunting the man who she views as the little fish or is the little fish her daughter? All I know is that this is all sinister and her seductive behavior makes it all the more creepy.
It's amazing how waterproof her makeup is.

She said that even to her the lyrics dont have a precise meaning, and it's up to any listener to hear in it what he wants. Thus it's stupid to claim it would BE about this or that. Some say it's about the loss of virginity, some say it's about a mother killing her daughter for discovering she was not a virgin anymore, and so on. Some people just desperately need sense, when there is not always one.

A love how all her hand movements are in sync with the syncopated percussion and then the plucked violin, like she actually knows her own songs back to front, which these days is rare.

She writes the songs and produced a lot of her albums. In some albums she even plays multiple instruments (or all but drums for Uh-Huh).

I always got the impression she was highlighting the percussion and pizzicato strings for us, they may not have become so iconic in the song without the video. It's easy to say 'I'd have noticed them anyway' but as much? I don't think it's rare at all for singer-songwriters to know their songs back to front, now or ever.

This is one of those songs where I'm half certain that every part of the video is meaningful and every gesture is perfectly selected to convey a definite concept, but it could also be entirely misdirection to keep people interested while they listen to the amazing song behind it. Back in those 90s, as a teen, I saw this video on MTV, and just found it weird. It didn't make any sense to me, so I forgot about it pretty soon. 25 years on, just vaguely remembering the artist's name, I ventured to find it and watch it again. And boy was I surprised. This is an exquisite, mature, remarkable song and video.

The first time I heard this was on the radio at work. I immediately stopped what I was doing, and called the radio station to find out who it was. Since it was in a block, i had to describe the song to the dj. I just said the little fish big fish song! lol After work, I went straight to the record store and bought the album. I had a ridiculous sound system in my car at the time, and this sounded amazing!
I heard this song in The Basketball Diaries a looooong time ago, and then I just watched Yellowjackets and it was in there too, so it got stuck in my head and I had to look it up.

I've seen something close to 100 different bands and singers live, I saw PJ Harvey do "This this love?" live and it was Astonishing. Top 5 live performances of all time, better than anything out now.
I've seen her live twice in Toronto, she sounds exactly the same live! Its overwhelming to witness because I grew up listening to her in the 90s and she nails it live !

I was a teenager at hight school when this was released. In Spain only a few people who listened to indie radio stations knew about Polly Jean. Oh my God, 20 years or something? 20 years.
Me, too, a freshman. This local college radio station (risd) played all the great alternative songs. They recently sold the station, people were devastated.
I remember first seeing this video around 2 in the morning sometime in early June when I was 16... I played this song all summer after that. It has had one of the biggest impacts on me, the visuals, the sound, the emotion... PJ is a phenomenal artist.

I believe that she is considered all of that. Harvey is an utter genius, who inspired so many musicians around the world. The reason we didn't hear as much from her as we should of was that her music never fit any mold or label, and was just weird enough to be considered risky for massive radio play. Anyhow, I go on a PJ jag every three months or so, play her stuff until I run out of songs to play. Her new work is sublimibal and quite bizarre, but my heart belongs to her nineties cd's.
