Yeah, she kind of reminds me of Kate Bush in a way. She totally owns what she does and looks at it like an artist does, she doesn't just see it as "product".
I think what people may have a hard time understanding about PJ is her authenticity and lack of pretension. Music is force fed and manufactured and churned out in such a way that we become accustomed to what we THINK we like, because it's safe and simple and popular. Modern music and modern audiences don't want artists that challenge us or take us outside of our safety zone, which is exactly what Ms. Harvey encompasses. The thing is, she doesn't even realize she's doing it because it just...comes OUT of her; it's so organic and yes, raw. I doubt she even realizes (or cares) what a musical genius she is or the influence she's had and will continue to for a long time. All hail PJH.
Yes.....what you said totally encapsulates how I feel about it...no one wants to be challenged and want to stay in their safe little comfort zones and never leave...it sickening!
It is authentic but at the same time her first five or six albums the protagonist is never her (male, female, mythical is the voices in the songs..)... It is always a character, like subtler Bowie really. And ways she was in costume basically on stage and how she is quite reserved and shy but onstage is larger than life reminds me of Bowie.
This doesn't challenge me, or takes out outside my 'safety zone' This just a piece of good sleazy sounding rock, it's nothing new. All of her stiff is great which is why she sells out concert, shifts albums, top charts, and is highly critically acclaimed. And her more recent output is better than her early stuff.

That's youth for ya. Rock is all about the youthful, dangerous, sexual energy that is in all of us, but that can't be contained for a certain span of time....
She was always on the margins, never quite hitting the big time of mainstream success. While alternative rock did have a niche for female artists in the 90s, most of it was and remains very dude-centric. Also, you had people like Alanis Morisette and Gwen Stefani who were much more acceptable to mainstream ears, eyes and sensibilities, which drew attention away from gems like our Polly here.
