- Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered his National Day Rally 2023 speech on Sunday (Aug 20) at the Institute of Technical Education headquarters in Ang Mo Kio.
In his English speech, Mr Lee announced a S$7 billion Majulah Package to help what he called “young seniors” meet their retirement needs. He also unveiled various changes to Singapore’s public housing schemes, such as a new Plus category to keep home ownership affordable, and initiatives for singles and the country’s rapidly ageing population.

I dont usually comment on political speeches, and I like to say that I'm heartened to hear their focus on the mental wellness of seniors.
sure. benefiting PAP's base, the seniors, at the expense of taxpaying younger generations.
Very simple, because we are the baby boomers who is going to swing the votes in the next GE in 2025, it called advance bribery, same old bag of tricks. The young are irrelevant cos their CPF is limited and they are small in numbers, no hdb and CPF amount is not that significant as a whole. The baby boomers are also the labour force the PAP need to keep this whole machinery going so they introduce this cheap skate Majulah package. I mean what the point when the money they put in is being locked up in CPF. It a distraction and they have not address the ticking time bomb when flats hit 50 yrs old, among many others which this group of baby boomers are concerned about. If baby boomers are indoctrinated that PAP IS THE CHOSEN ONE, then it is going to be doom day in SG cos this whole PAP is going pear-shaped, see how the 4G and the other son chose to handle 38 Oxley Road and it backfired cos the LHY whom ppl thought it someone who milked the system feeding off on a silver spoon suddenly developed the spine and fought back with the sister defending the wishes of LKY. The PAP avoid and skid around the desires of many of these baby boomers in wanting their CPF returned to them when they are 55 years old and autonomy. This is a bribery and a very cheap cheap one, put money into your CPF, not in your bank account and up to them to dictate between $400 to $1000!!!!!! Crazy

What is the government trying to protect? The PAP or the country? If it is the latter, then surely they should be happy with whoever the best person is - and the best person is the one that the public chooses. So why so eager to slam down any actions that could encourage Singaporeans to vote outside the PAP however remote? In discussing about super aging, PM left out an existential issue: the fast declining Singapore talent pool brought about by aging and retirement. The solution is clear: more talented foreigners. This, however, will lead to serious social tensions between younger, more talented foreigners and aging Singaporeans.
The next PM needs to be a super great communicator and proselytiser. He needs persuade Singaporeans to accept naturalized Singaporeans as true Singaporeans.

This gov need to address the real long term issue as to why many of their locals, either fall short in the CPF to even reach BRS let alone FRS and their HDB housing isssue.

The new measures are better than what western.countries are getting.
Europe and U.K are looking towards winter this year with trembling.
Many seniors and retiress cannot afford to heat their homes for winter. Its either spend on food or heating. If they eat normally , they cannot afford to turn on heat ir hot water. They are freezing through the winter last year.
Luckily. SINGAPORE no gas shortage and no freezing winter.
So many U.K seniors and retirees want to migrate and stay in this part of tfe world , Malaysia, Singapore,nThailand .

The viability of having your HDB flat as a retirement nest instead of cash in your CPF account, is put to question in the recent case of Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS), where HDB owners at Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 are faced with the situation where they had to either fork out tens of thousands of dollars to find a new flat or to just simply break even if they were to downgrade to a smaller flat and settle for a lesser lease term.

Having No space for everyone is NOT an excuse. Given the record high foreign intake over the years. AND the plan to onboard 10 million population. WHY NOT you take care of your own people first?
Taking care of seniors is good and all but thats dealing with the symptom not the problem as the birth rate is going down and down more and more seniors aren't going to have any children to support them in the future and then their children will suffer more and less motivated to have children and its a downward spiral.
After 50 years of rule - uninterrupted - the PAP has failed to develop sustainable (population growth, education and economic development) policies that will enable locals to drive our economy, that is, creating jobs and attracting investments, with foreigners playing a complementary role. It is normal n polite to refer girls as " Mei nue" or " pretty girl". Girls like to be refered this way. If you refer to a guy as uncle and a female as auntie, look at the expressions. Even a fifty years old guy don't want to be called uncle. Anyway why do we pick on such a matter at this time when suddenly after 10 years n hundreds of thousands of post, suddenly this nonsense crops up. Mr. Tan, this kind of accusations will backfire. This is good, it should have been anticipated (given all the data available and ground feedback). But better late than never. So. It's still good. There are still lots of pain in other areas that has pain and needs change - inflation (whatever is done at Macrolevel is not flowing down to consumer (where it hurts); immigration (stop the steroid on this, decades on this and now Sg is hooked and cannot stop because of the pain, whose fault? Singaporeans are not anti-immigrants); healthcare - just keeps going up and up, time to cap the insurance profiteering on this. There must be a balance. ... The PAP showed that all the talk about change and reinvention was just talk. It cannot bring itself to ditch the playbook that it has relied on for decades - preying on insecurity, vulnerability and division, and promulgating how indispensable the PAP is to a glorious one-party system.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was in his element. The world has “turned much more troubling, even dangerous,” he said. That’s why the 4G leaders need support from every Singaporean in an increasingly troubled world.
Usually, they ramp up such messaging during election time. In the past 20 to 30 years, there has not been a general election where they do not amplify global or regional uncertainty, and looming threats and dangers.

There's something noticeable in the comments. And, there's a through line that cuts between two types - the ones that hate, the ones that doesn't. Observe how some look at netizen comments and want to say they are Singapore. Why? Anonymous accounts come from anywhere, it's not guaranteed Singaporean, they can even be AI.
How do they even talk about Singaporeans - It's full of hate. We all know if all the changes they want happens, gleaming from their attitude, we know they'll still eagerly search for something to hate.
CZcams is an American company - the user base - guess where most likely will they come from? It's easy for people at a distance to assume others somewhere else as stupid. If they don't understand - they hate. We've met people like that.
Whoever spends too much time online commenting on every post listening to the same bubble the algorithm feeds them - even a local will begin to hate their neighbors and themselves.
That's nothing to be celebrated - it is destroying many western countries already and we can see the consequences - their news expresses the pain of living in it all the time.
A well-adjusted person, how would they feel about such accounts? If there's little, they're just obnoxious. If more are like that, it's horrifying, and one's humane expression will be total aversion and disgust towards them - especially when they shoehorn conclusions and assume one can fall for rhetoric that exploits human insecurities to steamroll against logic

In Singapore, we have a one-party system. While this cuts out the gridlock, it does not cut out the tendency to put party before country.
Which political party, if given the opportunity, would not give in to the temptation of doing what it can (fair or foul) to shore up its power and dominance?
Here are the next steps for Singapore if DO NOT want to see a downfall from here:
1. Abolish NS (Or reduce it to Basic Training - That is sufficient conditioning for building a citizen). A communistic approach to building a military of the 1960s.
It has become a detrimental, obsolete system.
The war of our times is economical and social, and you lose on the strongest backbone of the economy - the young male - completely disenfranchised in some jungle getting bit by mosquitoes at their most formidable phase.
2. Encourage SIngaporeans to openly debate and express their ideas - We need more leaders, not more followers, who can SPEAK and articulate themselves on GLOBAL stages.
3. Legislate and REGULATE recreational marijuana, e-cigarettes and sheesha - You are killing your population by forcing them to get addicted to Cigarettes and Alcohol. Everybody should have the freedom to choose their favorite brand of 'poison'.
This will also create new industries and jobs.
You can do a public vote on how many people would rather do REGULATED marijuana to relax like a glass of wine, vs cigarettes and alcohol that only kill and incite riots.
4. More youths in positions of power - encourage youth politics.
5. BTO minimum age cap to age 27-28 for single men. Yet again, you have disenfranchised single young men from a SIngaporean privilege INSPITE of them serving their country and sacrificing their 2 years. We have a SURPLUS of inventory in public housing.
Look around you and tell me I am wrong.
Lowest birth rates in history combined with highest stress levels and lowest hormones.
This will also help with more young Singaporeans choosing to adopt Singapore as their forever home vs them migrating out to other countries.

Nah. All of us able to cash out our HDB whenever we want to. Can sell for profits then upgrade to condo. In a rental case, you wouldn't be able to sell the house you are renting.
Even if you build a bungalow in Johor, your bungalow have to tear down once it is no longer safe for staying. You can then keep the bricks and tiles in your new house.

After a decade-and-a-half of the PAP’s experiment, the results are in and it is plain that Mr Lee’s attempt at economic restructuring has failed. The reasons are not hard to evince.
The question that Singaporeans must ask is: How much more of Mr Lee’s “restructuring pains” must we endure before we are willing to change?
The painful truth is that the outlook for this country has never been bleaker and, the PM’s blandishments notwithstanding, things will get worse under the PAP’s autocratic but directionless leadership. Many analysts have, in fact, expressed the fear that the current downturn will be protracted.
But it wasn’t that Mr Lee did not know of the seriousness of the problems that our country faced. He acknowledged in the 2003 ERC report that the economy needed “major, fundamental changes, in strategies as well as mindsets”. To do this, he promised that “restructuring will speed up”.
Even if you say future of country looks bleak , those who stay behind to face the storm bravely is the strong spirit.
if the intention is to “change mindsets”, then why are our workers still forbidden from independently organising themselves and our people prohibited from freely gathering and speaking up? Mindsets, if it needs to be said at all, cannot be changed by fiat.
For one thing, the PAP, through the Temasek Holdings of which PM Lee’s wife is CEO, still has its tentacles in every sector of the local economy. The massive political-corporate nexus has created a non-transparent, unaccountable and kiasi corporate bureaucracy that is anathema to a culture at one with creativity and risk-taking.
