- Dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong
Defying the odds and achieving the unexpected - in short, reinventing our destiny as a small state - has been a hallmark of modern Singapore’s success under the leadership of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. To mark the 100th birth anniversary of the nation’s first prime minister, the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Institute of Policy Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS), are jointly organising the “Reinventing Destiny” conference.

I like Our DPM Mr Lawrence Wong he have Justice fair .I am Poineer Generation.I am not Politician just layman .With his experience and knowledge from my opinion he is good listener .
I am extremely impressed, from Lee Kuan Yew, to Lee Hsien Loong to Vivian Balakrishnan to Lawrence Wong.. Singapore's policy message and planning has remained consistent and on-point from day one. This demonstrates their own long-term planning and continuity
Vivian?? He is just a FM
@@Jkl62200 My entire point is consistent foreign policy messaging and includes Vivian as foreign minister.
@@joseki6644 OK.. but then you miss out Goh Chok Tong, Jayaratnam, George Yeo, Dhanabalan etc etc. Vivian can't hold a candle to anyone of them.
@@Jkl62200 I haven't followed the others much.. Just what came across my screen. Never really watched Goh before, I am not Singaporean. Will check out Jaya Ratnam. Same for Dhanabalan. But I don't know who's etc etc.
George Yeo I have only seen on post-career interviews, he looks a bit lost since losing his seat, not to digress from his content though.. I can see why he was a minister.
And of course Rajaratnam
A series of leading questions seeking to elicit emotional responses are met with calculated, stoic analysis of current reality and facts based responses of the global environment. Kudos to Singapore current Deputy Prime Minister.
❤
It’s nice that a politician and policymaker can succinctly lay out the multitude of considerations to various issues on hand, and not take the easy route to overpromise.
The DPM is in good stead to take on a bigger role.
At least he is well prepared. U wonder if western leaders even know where Indonesia is
He's gonna be a great PM.
I guess he will try his best

The real question though, is, when the country comes under serious pressure from foreign entities, will the team still be able to follow their principles or will they end up succumbing to pressure and playing to another's flute?

I watch this Zakaria too. Now, I am pleased that he is continuing with our next Prime Minister Mr Lawrence Wong.
Mr Wong will have more and more confident as a 4G leader. No worries, LHL is also a memory bank.
In Singapore, English is our medium of business world. No need translator.
Lawrence Wong, mature and composed, effortlessly grasps the world's pressing issues-a true asset to Singapore.

Proud to have LW as our next PM
Fared Zakaria is trying to trap lawrence Wong in his questioning. I think our DPM is doing well to fence him off.
He does not answer many question. Just a lot of words to basically not say much
As 4G leader leading Singapore may I grow in your care and trust together with the rest of Singaporeans. May I see favour in your eyes and not been left out. God bless.
I see China's future as bright. I say that not because i sm ethnic Chinese, but just being pragmatic.Despite being harrassed and hammer by US and its client states for over 6, 7 years and having huge internal problems to solve at home with 1.4 billion ppl, they did a good job in solving or mitigating the problems. Not easy, but they did it. With such strength, they have a great future.
China's future will be bleak and dysfunctional breaking further and further away from the smooth growth they had experience over the past 40 years . The next 40 years will be extremely difficult for China due to their chosen path to break away from America and the West
WTF has this to do with Singapore ?
@@meganfoxbf
Guess u are not pragmatic at all. Singapore has a pragmatic govt. China has one too, Putin is pragmatic but the rest, well, u can see what their policies are. When u work with pragmatic govt, there will always be trust which will promote economic development, prosperity for all. Now, don't bring those political ideologies thinking into the comments. I don't entertain those ppl.
@@meganfoxbf
Just to emphasise a little bit. In the past, Singapore do big business with all the big boys, EU, US, China. But now, US and EU are in big trouble as the govt are filled up with opportunistic, incompetent, untrustworthy politicians freaks with their own unmovable political ideologies. With such govt, who dare to do business with them?Less trade, less economic development = economic prosperity affected.
@user-nq2sw6sg8q - as if china can be trusted ? how China cheated LKY suzhou project , lock up Singapore military vehicles in a warehouse for weeks hidden from sight ( trying to copy ) . u really think Singapore government do not known what China is doing behind the backs ? xi Jinping do not any more rivals alive today...
I am a convert, I think Larry is the right choice for PM.
He will be even more polished with time. I agree he is a good choice for pm. He will be even more crafty and slippery with CNN and the likes with passage of time. It is the only way to handle BBC and CNN and Bloomberg
@@eye0807 Fareed Zakaria may have come with Western eyes and perspective and asked tough questions, but he was fair and allowed Larry to complete his answers without interruption. I am proud that Larry was able to hold his own and put his points across succinctly and with humor.
Our leaders must learn to take tough questions if they are to represent us internationally (look at how well LKY and LHL take questions from the international press). You improve only when you go through the baptism of fire. Our new leaders should not expect only slowballs and lowballs from the meek & obedient reporters from CNA and ST who are trained / paid to publish only the Govt's side and never to ask any tough follow up questions even if there are huge gaps in the answers given. Our leaders will not get better if they are coddled that way.
I am impressed and have confidence in LW, who can only get better.

Lawrence Wong was Personal Private Secretary ( PPS ) to Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, as a young administrative officer, which makes this presentation even more special.
HSK was the Personal Private Secretary ( PPS ) to Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, not lawrence wong. LW was the Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong between 2005 and 2008. which may explain why he's the PM in waiting.
LW well said on the question of making a choice between China or USA side.
41:30 The answer is pretty obvious judging by the laugh in the crowd reacting to an American asking this question, Fareed knows it too hence his humble reaction. Also when Prime Minister talked about Chinese leadership he talked about them being competent and smart technocrats, he did not offer the same kind of generosity towards American leadership.... Very subtle and very diplomatic, offered his viewpoints without being disrespectful or condescending, honestly I cant think of a single western politician being this sophisticated nowadays, everything comes out of their mouth is war, race, gender, sanction and the rest are just pure lies.
This Zakaria always praise LKY. Nothing wrong. Just stating my observations. Where is the value add? He should criticize and flag out any areas for improvement
Somehow I felt Larry is regurgitating what was being fed..I love the way he talks ..like every sentence is a question LOL.
The question from RI students in regards to the migrant workers issue asked the wrong question. Most migrant workers who stay in the dormitory , do not even speak English except their own dialect. Look at Mexico's migration workers in USA would deter Singapore taking them in as PR or bringing in their dependents. It's not just a simple welfare issue for the migrant workers, it is a social stability issue per se.
Good job Larry
If that’s not all, she also asked if President Halimah Yacob is aware of the exact size of the reserves when she made decisions on its drawdown, given that it is the President’s responsibility in safeguarding the National Reserves.

20:15 A small thing, but it's amazing to see the difference between state media interviews and foreign ones. FZ doesn't let LW off the hook when he tries not to answer a question:
LW: Particularly after the recent incidents and the setbacks we have suffered, it's really for us to reflect, learn, and grow stronger from that experience and do everything we can to win the confidence and trust of Singaporeans.
FZ: What did you learn from them?
LW: Well, I believe we we start off actually from a very high base and that high base of trust between the people and the elected government and the PAP is still there, it's still there, so what I... my immediate priority is to see how I can strengthen that reservoir of social capital and trust and ensure that we can continue to earn the confidence and mandate of Singaporeans when we next go to the polls.
FZ: ...What did you learn from this from the various scandals and problems?
LW: ...I would say you know thinking about not just the recent incidents but also the broader experience I've had in government I've learned to have a certain sense of equanimity in government.
As usual, all these foreign media / interviewers especially western media will try their best to corner the interviewee to sing their western song. I m glad that Mr Lawrence Wong gave good response. He just need to learn founder PM Lee Kuan Yew’s skill to turn the table around.
@@leewn2319 Is wanting to know what LW actually learned from the scandals, given that he said that he learned something, "singing a western song"?
Too much of the "correct" narrative and too little answers

LW did answer the question. In a nutshell - he knows he (and PAP) needs to restore trust and remember that he (and PAP) is not infallible. These sound like learning points to me. Not sure what else the interviewer was digging for.

We are living in a world that the western countries cannot compete as an efficient economy so they cut their nose the spite the face in hoping that active intervention is going help but they will get disappointed and Singapore will suffer because of that.
