  • Squackett : Steve Hackett / Chris Squire - A Life In A Day : CD / BluRay : Review
    A Life Within a Day" by SQUACKETT is a beautiful album that showcases Steve Hackett's guitar playing, ranging from the fiercest shredding to the most gentle classical pieces. Chris Squire provides his wonderful bass playing, and their voices gel so well. The album features elements of YES and Genesis, but also hints of the Beatles and a bit of Zeppelin.
    This new CD and Blu-Ray edition revisits the classic 2012 album, a collaborative project between two legends of Progressive Rock, Chris Squire and Steve Hackett. The two musicians met when Squire was working on a solo album and needed some guitar parts. Chris was put in touch with Steve, and through these sessions, the idea for Squakett was born. Over four years in the making, the album "A Life Within a Day" became much more than the sum of its parts. "It was very much about a bunch of pals swapping notes and anecdotes," Hackett later recalled.
    Overall, this album stands out as a testament to the extraordinary talents of both musicians, blending their distinct styles seamlessly into a cohesive and captivating musical journey.

    I love this album. I feel I could listen to “Tall Ships” every day. Beautiful composition. As for the title track - magnificent.

    Just gave the first song a listen for the first time ever, and never does a song pull me in immediately but have to say I liked it as soon as it started playing. Think I will like this effort, already a big fan of both, not sure why I never listened before now, but thats the great thing about Music, its always lying there waiting to be discovered. For me personally there is still so much from the 60s-80`s still left to be discovered.

    I bought the single 45 release and on vinyl as well. As silly as it sounds, I have not even opened the album or listened to the 45 record. I love Steve Hackett's playing and Chris Squire's playing as well. I have been holding onto these collectors' items. Thank you for posting. Cheers from Indiana.

    Thanks for reviewing, Phil. I let this one go by for all the wrong reasons - I thought the title Squackett sounded jokey or silly, I was disappointed in GTR - but it’s good to be reminded to give it a chance after all this time.

    Haven't listened to this record in years! Always enjoyed listening to it so must give it another spin. Never listened to the 5.1 though...
    I always pronounced Squackett rhyming with jacket! 😄 As for Fish Out of Water, there were complaints about the stereo remix but I quite enjoyed it.

    Phil, thanks for the review. I have enjoyed this album since it came out and can’t quite understand why it’s not more highly thought of. A really good listen and as you say, one to listen to. Kind regards

    Hi Phil -have had the CD for ages, and I have to say its one of my favourites, its just brilliant. I pronounce it S(Quack)ett as in duck quack quack lolol. Funny though - Pete Pardo thinks its a "good" album. Go figure ??? Thats music I guess lol, but to me its a masterpiece. What's on the additional disc? Cya Doug

    I’ll probably give it one more chance.
    I SHOULD love this album, but it has left me cold every time I’ve heard it.
    It’s not the playing, it’s the songs that I can’t get on with.

    Got it on original release, it's a very good album but let's get real, it's far from a masterpiece.

      It is to me, I find it very moving. Perhaps it’s because I have interviewed Steve a few times and was immersed in the 5.1 mix. However, I fully respect your views as well. Phil

      @stuartraybould2574 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@NowSpinningMagazine I have the 5.1 mix but I don't connect with the music as much as you, which is why I personally, can't call it a masterpiece. For me, a masterpiece is on a different level. This album is no Dark Side of the Moon or even Hackett's own Spectral Mornings or Voyage or even Night Siren.

      Thanks for this review. I missed this when it first came out probably because of the name as you noted. Chris Squire is one of my favorite bassists and singers. Under appreciated I believe. Steve Hackett plays a beautiful guitar. Will have to check it out online. Please keep the album reviews coming. Rock on!
