    Have never seen Rafa so amped and demonstrative in those early sets.. like he was willing himself through pain to win this thing. What a champ. There is no-one that competes as hard. I don't love Rafa, but huge respect for the man.

    As a huge Federer fan since he beat Sampras at Wimbledon in ‘01, I’ve watched the man play the best tennis I’ve ever seen at the age of 36. Then comes the return of Nadal in 2017, a man who has battled injuries throughout his career, then goes on to win majors whilst probably playing through the pain barrier. I had wished for a Nadal/Fed final, but in that 4th set, we knew that Rafa was in pain. I hope he comes back strong later this year, tennis needs his fire and passion. And to those that don’t wish him well, please don’t comment.

      The majority of players never even reach quarterfinals EVER in a grandslam, AND he has won 16 majors already.
      The ''roller coaster'' argument is stupid. Why don't you take a look at Tsonga, or Berdych, or Ferrer, or Monfils or anyone else for that matter? Since they have never, ever won a slam before?

    • @samy29987
      @samy29987 Před 6 lety +7

      Getting to quarter finals, semifinals and finals consistently is pretty good if you ask me.
      What about players like Benneteau, Istomin, Troicki, Bellucci, Granollers, Smyczek, Mahut, etc etc they have never reached a QF of a gs before, and even if they did, it probably only happened once in their entire career.
      Being one of the greatest ever doesn't have anything to do with the original argument. It focuses on Rafa ''had it rough'' in Australia when 95% of the players on tour have it worse than him. Victimizing Nadal is stupid since he has been RIDICULOUSLY successful in tennis.

    I don't know what happens to youtube viewers. Are some people watching tennis only because of Nadal,Federer,Djokovic or other single player? I'm a federer fan, but I know that even he has the most Grand Slam titles he won't win every game, he won't be at his best position every time, every match. Even though I want fed to win, don't blame on players that are all working hard. Federer is great player so does Nadal and so does Cilic. What a pitty. Cilic was playing incredible but it was obvious that Nadal couldn’t continue after the fourth set. I feel like Nadal should take a longer break and REALLY heal his injuries. I had a feeling before the tournament that he couldn’t play at 100% for seven matches in a row, especially after he withdrew from Brisbane. I’m happy for Cilic though. People who says that he doesn’t deserve his slam are idiots. When he’s playing his best tennis It’s hard to see anyone beating him. Unfortunately nerves comes in his way to often but hopefully he’ll keep on playing at this level a bit more consistently this season.

    This injury was expected honestly. When you spend an average of 3 hours on court for every match at the age of 31 and with that playing style, something is bound to happen. In my opinion, Nadal should learn to be more aggressive returning the ball like Federer, even if it means more errors and more games dropped. That way, he saves his body.

PLus after 3 sets of vigorous hard fought tennis, he can really celebrate however they want as long as it isn't done right at the other player. Plus they all know each other and are probably friends anyways so idk...

    I guess that when you watch the match, these highlights are not that special as i thought... Missing the Cilic's crucial miss on the 3rd set tie break when it was 5-5 is ridiculous!!!
    It was heart breaking... I actually thought it was game over for him, being 2-1 down on sets against Nadal... What i saw on the 4th set was impressive, it was like he was starting another match, battling so hard, overcoming hardly lost points, powering through the ever so fit Nadal.
    He was winning against the fit Nadal, and i'm almost sure he would also have won if Nadal din't got injured!
    I saw the mighty Cilic from that Us Open...

    • @Brandespada
      @Brandespada Před 6 lety

      Well Ferreira, if you saw the miss on the 3rd set tie break when it was 5-5 you saw the whole match so there's no point for you to be watching the highlights here. Besides, if it was 5-5 it wasn't even "crucial". I for one didn't miss the miss you say is missing...

    • @jorgeferreira3760
      @jorgeferreira3760 Před 6 lety +3

      it was 5-5 on the tie break, and it would be Rafa serving next, so instead of a 6-5 to Cilic it was 6-5 to Rafa, serving, is that "crucial" enough for you?
      And i didn't see the whole match, i started around the end of the 3rd set

    Losing only because of an injury?? This is exactly what nadal wants you to think. Cilic played like a monster. Such a goddamn sore loser. He can never stand the fact that someone beat him fair and square . He HAS TO take away credit from his opponent somehow. And make him feel bad for winning. Maybe it is his involuntary coping mechanism for a loss.

      Not surprising, serve bots like Cilic hit 20+ aces in these kinds of matches which are counted as winners, they also play all out in or out tennis which at their best can help them hit a winner for every unforced error, if you actually examine the stats, Cilic hit probably 3 times more UEs than Nadal which makes this stat not impressive at all.

    And this is one more reason why federer is the GOAT.Longevity isnt given naturally, its a delicate and complicated process based on the right decisions over and over and over again through the years. Diet is part of this as is the correct calculation and interpretation of the bodys signals, the correct maintenance of body weight vs energetic output vs stamina and how to adapt to a professional schedule around all this and get the best results, not to mention dealing with losses and keeping the mind clean and hungry for more. Only the best of the best can do this and thats why federer in that regard stands alone without competition, present or past, nobody has done what he is doing in terms of handling his body through a career like his. Nadal is a all time great and probably the third best tennis player of all time (i hold djokovic in higher regards) but his approach to tennis and career isnt as well tailored to longevity as federers is.

I mean, we are literally seeing a golden age of tennis, where literally 7 people (Cilic, Del Potro, Wawrinka) have won all the majors for the last 10 years. Thats unbelievable. I respect everysingle one of those players so much and I feel blessed to have grown watching them. Debates about who was or is the best don't matter, because each person values different things in a tennis player. SO just shut up and enjoy this, before its too late

    Rafa was definitively beaten by the better player, while I don’t doubt the leg was bothering him, hence hindering his chances, throwing in the towel is just bad etiquette when so many other players who cramp up - Djokovic, DelPo, even Baghdatis tough it out and honorably lose to the better player that day. Rafa, you have all the tools to end points faster.. it’s time you let your game evolve a bit.

      You forgot to mention Federer, who never retired from a match he had started. He played through mono and back injuries without even mentioning anything. In 2016 Wimbledon SF, he played after he clipped his recently operated meniscus. After the knee gave way and Fed collapsed to the ground (a rare view), he got up, stood the beating like a man, finished the match and gave all the credit to Milos, although it was clear he couldn't move anymore. I call that respect for the opponent and for the fans.

    I think Nadal was indeed bothered by injury of some sort, which aggravated in the 4th leading to the 4-1 deficit. There were clearly no issues in the first three sets where he was sprinting all over the court as usual, especially that tiebreaker. I mean he was leading by 2 sets to 1 in the 4th, I don't think he would have quit under normal circumstances despite being 4-1 down in the 4th since there were countless times he was in this position but came back to win the match. He definitely knew that he had almost no chance of winning against Cilic who was becoming more dangerous as the match progressed. That said, I do think it was not a very sporting move by Nadal (at least to Cilic who really took it to Nadal and would've won regardless i believe) and that he should have at least finished the match.

    ON to the injury:
    What happens when you depend and ONLY depend on physical strengths throughout your career. he's worn out and body cannot take it. he also cannot play light and effortless and win like Roger does. he still plays like he was 18, bit slower but same style...this is what happens.
