Honda CBX 1050 - The Motorcycle That Sounds Better Than A F1 Car

- When it was launched back in 1978 the Honda cbx1050 was like any other late 70’s superbikes. A large and powerful engine showed into an severely under engineered chassis with poor suspension set up. You had to have some kind of death wish to push this motorcycle to it’s limit. But despite all that down sides one characteristics of the motorcycle made it stand out from the crowd forever.

I'm 72 and over the last few years I sold off most of my motorcycles until I was down to 2 that will never be sold, a 79 CBX and an 82 CBX. The 79 has the glorious Pipemaster 6 into 2 into 6 that brings out the F1 sound shown here. At 70 MPH and above it has that heavenly wail that I cannot get enough of. The 82 is a magnificent touring bike. Thank you Honda for enriching my life.
Still ride it?
Have an 82 since new, User friendly with lots of moxie! They nicknamed it the New Vincent Black Shadow. Call it whatever you like 80,000 klicks and still a dream to ride!
Wow...you own 2 of these....😯 please adopt me Sir 😆😆🤣 kidding

what model year of cb1050 or what size engine sounds the best? (stock) better than F1 car? like the one at 0:40 in this video?
After 20 years of not owning a bike I've suddenly remembered how it felt. Divorced now with cash in the bank I'm off to get one..... Today.
What are you getting?
I bought 2 bikes when I got divorced. Very therapeutic.

Back in 1979 I remember one passing me on the freeway when I was on my LTD Kawasaki. Had a Vance & Hines 1171 motor polished and ported heads and V&H 4 into 1. I was the Badass in S. Houston Streets. When that Honda CBX passed me it sounded like a pissed off F1 engine. That day I was no longer the King of the hill.

I remember reading about the exhaust sound in one of the cycle mags when the CBX first came out. A 6 cylinder engine has some unique tuning possibilities. Back then, Honda R&D would develop a product and then invite the manufacturing side over to show them their new product. R&D sent a team of acoustic engineers to the Hokkaido Air Force Base in northern Japan with a bunch of equipment, and they recorded the sounds of a F-4 Phantom jet taxiing, taking off and landing, then they came back and engineered an exhaust that had that same sound. When they introduced the bike to the build side, Mr. Honda was there, and he said in no uncertain terms that they would not build a bike that sounded like a jet fighter! So they went back and designed the exhaust to sound like an F-1 race car. Legend had it that somewhere in an R&D warehouse there was the original exhaust, and there were a lot of motorheads lusting to find it.
The way I heard that story. Mr Honda listened to this exhaust system, then turned to the engineers, bowed to them and said. "You have achieved a remarkable thing here, but we cannot market a motorcycle that sounds like a jet"

THE legend. THE CBX. Greatest exhaust note in motorcycle history.
When I was 16 my first job was a motorcycle mechanic. I remember taking these out the crate and building them. I'm 56 now and yes, your absolutely correct.... the CBX is thee most awesome motorcycle ever created.
Just listen to it.... nothing compares to it, not even anything of today.. the H2 even. NOTHING beats the sheer awesomeness of this engine.
Best sound in the world my friend
Right on
Still think the best sounding bike I've ever heard is the nsr 500
Great sound alright but for me it is the big two stroke H2 sound that I love most
I'll take an old V-MAX instead of the CBX any day of the week.

My late father had a friend who had one of these for a short period and it really did sound like a F1 car. We lived in a small valley with a 2 mile straight road. This bike wide open was glorious...no bike I've ever heard sounds as amazing.
🥰😍
I remember this bike with mixed emotions. The engine was in every aspect formidable, the brakes and manoeuvrability let me fear for my life. I had it only for 3 weeks and sold it, i was afraid of this bike. I sincerely wish i never sold it
It never scared me. But I can understand why it would. it didn't handle as well as I would have liked. I have a Stock 82 Suzuki GS 750 now, that handles better. I just realized watching this vid, how similar the seating is between the two. The bad about the CBX The Cops always looked, at the sound....I didn't care for that attention. At high Rs in certain areas you could hear the bike for a few miles. The Suzuki can scream, but nothing stock sounds better to me than that CBX.
My brother routinely ditched cops on his. Lol.he could handle that bike well....
I had a 1980, this video takes me back, best sounding motorcycle ever, F1 sound is kick ass
My older brother had the same bike he absolutely loved it and so did all his friends as a matter of fact his best friend bought the bike from my brother and turned it into a drag bike
@Jwad ferrari not that sounds dude

@@perberge The 80 had the same spokes as the 79 but they were reversed when installed and were painted black. I've had 2 79's my first one I bought when they were first out and allways wished I never sold it. I was lucky enough to find a low mileage one aprox 20 years ago and kept that one for 5 or 6 years then I was made an offer that I couldn't refuse.

Inline 6 cylinders motorcycle oh the Car Gods made a Strong motor.
@@fucklove23_73 Your witness on his periods?
I used to love working on these as a franchised Honda mechanic. Our first one sold developed a carb problem which kicked out a crank bearing and the whole engine needed rebuilding under warranty. 6 carbs, 24 shimmed valves, 6 cylinders. When it was all stripped out on the bench it was a sight to behold! I loved the challenge of shimming the valves correctly and resetting the carbs. When done right the beautifully crafted engine ran like a Swiss watch, but if a carb or two were out, or a shim was too tight or loose, then your ear went straight to that rattle or rumble that wasn’t quite right and the frustration could really set in! But that was the challenge and to get these things running sweet was greatly rewarding. I still fondly remember our bank of 6 vacuum gauges flickering away with all their rubber hoses like spaghetti lying over those carbs.
Then of course came the test rides!! 😁
You didn't work for Bill Head in Preston did you? Mine had to be fully stripped down under warranty.
I can still remember hearing a CBX1000 with a 6 into 1 exhaust at a track day many years ago where they were doing drag races the length of the main straight. The sound was unbelievable.
Every time someone revs a Honda cbx 1050, a mechanic finds his 10mm.

I bought my first street bike in 1982. It was a Honda CBX and I was 18 years old. I kept the bike until 1989. When I sold it she had 40,000 miles on it and had never been down despite being raced 3 times in an iron butt rally from Spokane WA. To Las Vegas. I still miss that bike
It is statistically amazing you're still alive. Congratulations! The CBX is one of the WORST choices an 18-year-old can make for his first street bike unless he's been racing motocross for several years.
@@wsbill14224 I guess that's what I left out. I have been riding since I was 5 & started racing motorcross at 9 and flat track at 13
The finish and craftsmanship on the engine is still stunning to this day. Built with love by real tradesmen
As a teenage motorcycle enthusiast in '78 I remember when this bike came out. We all sat around slack-jawed and drooled over the magazine articles. Great memories.
Me too. This was my dream bike. Had some smaller Hondas and tried also some Yamahas. The CB 350F had a beautiful sound, but nothing close to this musical heaven.

WoW! It really does sound like F1. nd worth hearing the note.
Love the old styling as well.
Actually he said it sounds better than an F1 engine, but to me it sounds the same. Even FSAE university teams using engines like the R6 end up with similar sounding formal cars to this
F1 doesn't sound like that anymore ever since they reduced to 6 cylinders, which is a shame since this lovely concerto is obtainable on 6 cylinders as Honda proven here
At 18 I got my motorcycle license but I was still saving up to buy a motorcycle. A guy in my neighborhood I talked to sometimes had a CBX 1050, I ran in to him and he asked if I had my license yet, I told him I got it yesterday, he threw me the keys for his bike and said "take her for a spin". Oh man what a ride, my very first bike-ride that wasn't a driving lesson and it was on a CBX 1050. The CBX 1050 wasn't nearly as fast as some of the bikes I owned in later years, but what a magnificent first experience. Kudos to the CBX 1050 guy, he wasn't a close friend or so, he was just someone living in my neighborhood.
That sound... just incredible! Just like the F1 cars from the same era!
I almost got caught watching this by my wife!!! Didn’t expect her back that early!!!!

They need to make a 2020 version of this bike with the same engine but different body
Agree
I was looking at a list of upcoming bikes and saw 2020 CB1000X. For one glorious moment I thought it said CBX1000.
The closest thing we have is the BMW K1600 with a 1600cc inline-six. I rode one, the engine is absolutely glorious. I don't think we need to be sad.
The one at 4:00 was pretty rad ;)
Same thought came to my mind. This engine and sound deserves new & latest body of 2020
Fun Fact. Some Honda Engineers designed an exhaust for the CBX that made it sound like the USA's McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom Jet. Cooler heads decided it might not be a good idea, and the idea was dropped. I rode one for about six months as a Showroom demonstrator. A beautiful bike to ride and insanely fast for a road bike. However, it was a failer as a "Production Bike" racer. That is, races were showroom bikes that anyone could purchase race together. As long as the rider held both a street and a racing licence.
Please tell me there are videos of it. For the love of God let there be audio recordings. 😫
Like a McDonnell F-4, I think not!
@@NeroontheGoon there is no claim that the bike in the video sounded like an F4
Back then the Southern Hemisphere was the hotbed of production racing, especially long distance, endurance production racing. The CBX never really made a mark, being no faster than the oppositions machines, and needing more fuel stops, The CB1100R on the other hand, introduced in 1980, was very successful production race bike, being basically a homologation special.
I remember working on them at motorcycle shops, carb syncing, and valve adjustments were no fun, but I did look forward to the test rides!

Hell yeah !!!! I'd drop my books, come out to hear it and scream F@ck Joe Biden.
I took one for a test drive back when it was new. Two things I noticed right away. That long flat vinyl seat had nothing to hold your butt in place when you cranked the throttle and if you weren't hanging on to the bars there was a very real danger of having it drive out from under you. It was a very stable bike, so much so that it had to be manhandled into and out of turns. It wore me out in my favorite canyon. But what a thrill it was to ride it!!
I took a friend's 1980-something GSX 1100 for a spin. I got off and said, "no more for me".
😍
U.S market CBXs came with far higher, pulled back bars and foot pegs that were further forward than other markets, Non U.S market CBXs have a more "sports" riding position that were better suited for twisty roads.
My best friend bought a new CBX . And I had a new 900 cbf . We swapped bikes for the day . He had installed a 6 into 1 header . The sound was unbelievable, I was in love ❤. Unfortunately, my friend died just a couple years later on his Harley.. I will forever remember him and his CBX

My six children had grown up and left the coop and feeling a bit empty I realized I wanted to get back on a bike. I'm 65 now and I'm going to get another bike. I'd be more than happy with an old B33 or an ES2 now. The new bikes today are amazing but lack the character of the old oil dripping bangers. They have their own distinctive smell of petrol and oil together and just want to be loved and nursed along. It would be good to get on the tools again as well.

I was sixteen in 1983 and watched a tiny man on one of these . He dropped a gear opened the throttle and wheelied down the high street! The sound was unforgettable .
Can't remember the year but while in Daytona for Bike Week I was in the parking area. Four CBX's pulled up. Incredible music from the whole group!
Absolutely incredible! What great music🥂
almost 50 years ago, perfection was achieved
This bike is nothing compared to the performance of today's modern bikes. But today's modern bikes are nothing compared to the sound of the orchestra of that engine in this bike. Its a masterpiece of mechanical music, a Mozart of engine orchestra.
Bike performance has come a long way no doubt...but to this day, no bike has ever sounded half as good as the old CBX.. that tightly-wound high-pitch exotic note is ear sex all day
@@gparton85 Yeah!
