  • Balancing the Pelvis with the Iliosacral Twist
Here’s massage technique therapists can use to treat a rotated pelvis, more specifically an anteriorly rotated hemipelvis. As the noted osteopath A.T. Still said, “Roll the bones and they’ll go home.” And that’s exactly what Erik Dalton is doing with this technique, which is done to balance the pelvis.
Erik Dalton is the creator of Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, which is a system of techniques that incorporates osteopathic techniques, fascial stretching, and soft tissue mobilization or massage. It is used by massage therapists and other manual therapists around the world. You can find out more about this unique approach at Erik Dalton’s website: erikdalton.com.

Before I got into watching your work I find that I was already into counter-force so picking this up is natural. I do a 2 elbow/arm hook on the hip and slide the other in the ulnar side up the thoracic ti get a nice stretch. I think your body mechanics are wonderful and im learning to work less which as you've been doing thos 40+ yrs and that says alot. Question... does the pelvic/SI joint work help release tight erectors along the spine? I have quite a few that get sore and tight in this area. You are such a gifted teacher and lecturer. Thank you ❤

That sounds fantastic! To answer your question: Absolutely! One of the key tenets of MAT work is "level the head and tail". Using techniques like this to create a level sacral base is going to normalize reflex activity throughout the spine and normalize abnormal tension in the erectors.

The importance of the trochanteric/acetabulum relationship for maintaining spinal stability, which leads to spinal mobility, is critical for the entire structure of the body. Sacro-tuberous ligaments, sacro-iliac ligaments, and especially the quadratis femoris, are at the center of sacrol-spinal problems.

Is there a way to do this adjustment on yourself without another person? Thanks for the information. My PT did this adjustment differently, but my sports masseuse did it using your technique. I am so grateful to discover through them that this isn’t basis of all my back/hip/leg issues, but I’m so shocked at how little information about it is online.

You can lie prone and place a block of some kind under the anteriorly rotated ilium and perform slow pelvic tilts... it helps but not a lot.

I'm 5'2" and 67 years old. I've been practicing massage for 30 years. How do I do this on obese clients that I can barely reach across? Your demo clients are always thin and fit! And you seem to be relatively tall.

Great question! Efficient body use that safe for your body is important to me. In practice, I use a hydraulic table so I can get my client in the best position to perform these techniques. But sometimes because of your size relative to the client, it's just not feasible to do some of these techniques. As I get older, I appreciate working on smaller clients. 😉

@@daltonmyoskeletal I appreciate that your work focuses so much on the safety of the therapist. Is there another way? I see so many overweight and obese clients who have an obvious rotation in the pelvis.
