The lady from East Prussia who was a child after the war sounds like she'd have a really interesting life story to tell. An historian specialising in Oral History should do an in-depth interview with her.
Anyone who survived ww2 has interesting life stories to tell. My mother was a young child when war ended, and she would tell us how she and her siblings had to take a toy buggy and go steal cabbage or turnips from the farmer fields. They were poor cause their father died from war and mother was sick, and the children had to steal food wherever they could. All they ate was bread soup or cabbage stew for weeks, they didn't have meat for a long time.
Oh yeah, many came from Prussian province. Different culture.

Ich war 4 Jahre alt und habe die Geschichten von meiner Großmutter. Wir kamen aus Berlin dahin wegen der Bomben WKII. Was ich noch selber weiss, dort war die Erziehung netter: "Kindermund ist Gottes Mund" Wenn möglich hatte die Bäuerin mir alles gegeben. ❤ Die Erziehung der Kinder begann mit 6 Jahren in der Schule. Kinder halfen den Eltern zu Hause, das war normal und eine bessere Erziehung als Sprechen.
Die Abgelegenheit von Ostpreußen (jetzt Polen u. Russland) führte auch zu viel Selbstherrlichkeit. Mein Patentante kam aus jenen Gebieten, die Polizei war weit weg. Ihr Vater nahm das Gesetz selber in die Hand, die Mutter reagierte mit übergriffigen Forderungen auf das kleine Kind. Ihr mögt Geschichten, hier ist eine von meiner Patentante....sie war so 4-5 Jahre alt und hatte einen Hund geschenkt bekommen. Eines Tages war er weg. Man fand ihn, seine Knochen, an der Feuerstelle der armen Landarbeiter. Der Vater ent schied, dem Kind sei der Schaden entstanden, deshalb solle die Kleine das Urteil sprechen. .....Hier endete die Geschichte und meine Patentante litt ihr ganzes Leben darunter. Sie hätte Hilfe gebraucht.

Ich kann kaum glauben, dass viele Menschen Kohl und Sauerkraut nicht mögen. Dieses Essen ist köstlich und außergewöhnlich gesund.😃
Das liegt vielleicht auch daran, dass viele Sauerkraut einfach falsch zubereitet. Und halt mit Industrie Essig hergestelltes Sauerkraut kaufen. Ich stelle unser Sauerkraut selbst her und verwende dafür Filderkraut. Mein Sauerkraut ist sehr bekömmlich und nur leicht säuerlich.

irgendwie Fleischprodukte in Deutschland beleidigt
oder einfach bock im ausland nicht auf lokale gerichte zu verzichten. vegetarier ist man doch in 9/10 fällen aus protest zur tierhaltung. das ist ein punkt der im ausland ja schon komplett anders aussieht als hier. gibt tausend gute gründe im ausland mal fleisch zu essen.

I was born in Kempen, raised in a Kinderheim in Sankt Hubert, now living in Boulder, Colorado. One of the things we had often was called Pannas. Was ich nie mog waren Sülze, Leberwurst, Kohlrabi and butterscotch pudding. The nuns would fix some of these things on our lunch sandwiches to take to school. Fortunately, in the early 1950s, we still had outhouses and that's were most of that stuff ended up (uneaten). One of our treats was Bauern Brot mit Butter und Schmierkäse, My absolute favorite thing as a boy was Stachelbeeren, picked off the bushes in our yard.
My grandma (born and raised in Berlin by a mother from Ostpreußen during WWII) loved Kohlrabi und Sülze. I remember she always got the lunch meat with the jelly in it or those dark red slices that looked like tongue. I guess growing up during the war widens your pallet.

Kempener Feld = Kappesland wie Kempener Kappes. Kappes ist Niederrheinisch fur Kohl. I remember the endless fields of cabbage with pleasure and Heimweh. We used to cycle through the flatlands from Krefeld where I lived later on to grandfather’s house in Muhlhausen.Ah, those were the days, always cycling from tiny village to tiny village.

It just goes to show that people the world over are all the same, we all have things we like and don't like. as for learning "German" I spent two years in 'Germany in the US Army back in 1961-63. I could only learn enough "Gi German to make my way around. I tried taking a class there but found it was "Classical German. and a guy in my outfit Named "Shultz0 Told me no one on the street would understand me. so I left it. I am not a good student for languages. and now that I"m pushing 80 no need to learn now. I am amazed at people that speak several languages or more. and do it so easily. thanks for sharing ECF

Ich habe nie gedacht, dass ostpreußische Traditionen noch in Deutschland sind. Danke für das tolles Video.
Natürlich, ich kenne sehr viele Menschen die diese Traditionen noch haben. Allerdings, diese Dame ist ja etwas älter, ich glaube die Jungen haben es nicht mehr so sehr.
Es gibt aber noch viele alte Leute die mit ostpreussischen Eltern aufwuchsen, und die haben dann natürlich noch eine sehr starke ostpreussische Identität. Ich kenne z.b. eine Frau die wurde 1946 geboren, d.h. sie hat die Flucht selber nicht miterlebt - aber sie sagte mir , sie fühlt sich Königsberg /Ostpreussen mehr verbunden als Westdeutschland. Das kommt durch Erzählungen ihrer Mutter.

Mein Großvater ist Ostpreuße und ich bin daher selbst mit vielen ostpreußischen Einflüssen und Essen aufgewachsen.
In meiner Schulklasse waren mindestens 5 andere Kinder aus ostpreußischen Flüchtlingsfamilien, wobei in meiner Stadt Schlesier und ihre Nachkommen noch um einiges stärker vertreten sind und bis heute einen "eigenen" Stadtteil haben.
Wenn du in einer traditionell katholischen Region wie dem Rheinland protestantische Gemeinden findest sind diese meist preußische Flüchtlinge und ihre Nachkommen (so wie sich die meisten freien evangelischen Gemeinden in erster Linie aus Russlanddeutschen und ihren Nachkommen zusammensetzen)
Flecke ist abartig. 🤢 alleine schon der bitter-süß-saure Geruch, wenn das frisch gekocht wird. Das zieht überall ein und dann riecht das tagelang danach.
Meine Mutter isst das gerne und wollte früher immer, dass wir das auch essen. aber seit ich ihr mal deswegen auf den Teller gekotzt habe, wurden wir kinder nicht mehr dazu gezwungen.
Meine Uroma war aus Ostpreussen und hat Fleck gegessen...auch Königsberger Klopse und Rote Beete Suppe

On the topic: I lived in Germany for a bit, left, went home, and during a family reunion, right after coming back, someone asked me if I ate sausages there everyday (cause.. long live stereotypes!), and I said I didn't actually like most sausages (not big on sausages in general!, but for what it's worth, I could have thuringer sausage every single day of my life!).. so that grumpy uncle we all have was like "let me get this straight, so you went to Germany and "didn't like sausages"?, you don't know Germany then, why bother traveling if you don't understand the culture?" WHAT lol.. that woman above who's not into sauerkrat might as well renounce citizenship in my uncle's eyes haha

What's interesting though is the fact that we have so many different brands and types of sausages here that it's kinda difficult to generalize, because there are a lot of expensive brand sausages that taste like crap while there are also many cheap brands that taste amazing and vice versa. Best thing is to simply try a few out.

I have lived in Germany 15 years and I don't like the "sausages" here. I have some I like more than others (Krakauer, Nurnberger) but nothing comes close to the American breakfast sausages I love. And that my German husband loves - he eats Jimmy Dean every day in America. If Jimmy Dean came to Germany, my life would be much improved. Or even Keilbasa.

that is so funny - in German, it is zucchini, and here in American it is zucchini, but of course the Brits call it courgette. I didn't know the Germans used zucchini also. :)
they use zucchini in a different way in Germany - especially the men.
In Poland we call it "cukinia" which is basically polish way of pronouncing zucchini (well, almost but let's skip the detais).
I would presume the word may have been brought to US by German immigrants

Ich komme aus den Verinigten Statten von Amerika. Ich wohne in Wisconsin.
I guess liking dumplings is about context. My grandma made them every Thanksgiving with the turkey. My dad grew up on them in the late 1940s and early 1950s, they would have a nice meal on Sunday, maybe chicken with mashed potatoes. Grandma needed to feed a normal size Roman Catholic family, so the leftover mashed potatoes got flour added to them, rolled into 3-4" balls, and boiled into dumplings for the week.
"It's all about the gravy, kids.", Dad would say as we drove there.
I grew to love potato dumplings, but talk about not being able to move after a Thanksgiving meal...
This channel is really helpful to learn german. I request you that, You should make some videos at the university campuses so that we can learn what german students think about foreign students & how much they are helpful for them. Also, We can see the campus.

@@2adamast I don't know how it is nowadays, I studied during the 90s. The only two continents which weren't represented in our dormitory were North America and Australia-Oceania. You can't imagine how much fun we all had together. Normally it should be even better now (despite that I think it couldn't have been better). Some of the best years of my life.

My German-American grandmother introduced me to throat lozenge drops flavored with the herb horhound and honey. It is an acquired taste in that one has to learn to get past the initial bitter taste to enjoy the sweeter part of the drop. It was one confection that my friends only asked to try once, thereafter I could keep a bag of horhound drops to myself.
Horehound is spelled with an -e- in English. Horehound heißt auf Deutsch *der Andorn.*
My first voice teacher told me about Horehound, and it is the best if you have laryngitis. It allowed me to sing for a wedding once, when I could hardly speak!
I never heard of horehound/Andorn-Bonbons before. I only know that a Lot of people Like Kräuterbonbons (especially Ricola is a very Common product), but Andorn is only one of many herbs in it.

corn, peanuts and cheese for me. chocolate liquids or anything chocolate baked except for brownies. I like the chocolate bar on its own. mangos too on desserts is not a favorite. I love the fruit on it's own.

@@SharkJ002 Nein und Ja ))).... llevas razón en "tan bien", eso ha sido un error gramatical mío total, enorme. Pero el "qué" con acento se pone cuando se usa en una pregunta y el "cuánto" con acento lo mismo... estoy casi casi seguro ). De todas formas Danke Freund por hacerme ver la barbaridad que escribí: "tambien" (auch) und Ich wollte "so gut" schrieben (tan bien)... mein Gott. Danke.
@@brakaponter bitte! Yo uso las tildes en "qué" y "cuánto" cuando son exclamaciones, incluso cuando no uso los signos ("¡!"), o sea que el "qué pareja" lleva tilde según yo pero el "de que os vaya tan bien" no. Tendríamos que ver qué opina la RAE😅. Grüße!

8:50 Selbstverständlich gibt es Froschschenkel als warmes Gericht. Früher war das bei uns in Süddeutschland ein typisches Aschermittwoch-Gericht. Froschschenkel schmecken übrigens ganz vorzüglich, da das Muskelfleisch sehr zart ist.
Ich bin auch aus Süddeutschland, aber das gab's bei uns nie.
@@e.h.m.3243 Is mir auch aus Bayern nicht bekannt. Kann mir aber gut vorstellen, dass sich da eine katholische Auslegung über das ca. 18. Jh. hinaus regional gehalten hat. Zur Umgehung des religiös motivierten Fleischsverbots hatte der Klerus bestimmte Wassertiere (u.a. auch Biber) einfach zu Fischen erklärt, was deren Verzehr ermöglichte.

Marmite - das konnte ich gar nicht essen, als ich in London damals Au-pair war. Marmite schmeckt ganz komisch, sehr salzig, auch etwas säuerlich, das ist eigentlich ein Extract aus Hefe. Sie haben das auf Toastbrot geschmiert und gegessen, daran konnte ich mich nicht gewöhnen.
Schmeckt eigentlich genau wie Bierhefetabletten. Ich hab Marmite auch bei einem London Aufenthalt kennengelernt und kann seitdem nicht mehr ohne ^^

In American cauliflower is generally white and firm. It's a close relative of broccoli and there are several closely related vegetables of different colors. Normally it's in a mix with other vegetables or in a stew or soup. It can also be shredded to use in salads or sauces. Lately it's also been used to create vegetable pastas and rice like dishes. It is the freeze dried food that has an awful consistency after cooking, has nothing to do with the cauliflower itself. In Germany you buy the fresh vegetable and cook it - makes a great difference

Sülze ist eine Fleischgelee mit Schweinefleisch&Gemüse darin. Kuttel-/Flecksuppe (der Schwabe sagt saure Kutteln) ist geschnittener Rindermagen mit Essig
hey krass, endlich noch ein Mensch der früher als Kind Schokolade und Nutella nicht so wirklich mochte! :D Ich war auch so etwas speziell. Ich war immer eher so ein Obstkind und hab mich im Garten durchgefressen (unter anderem auch immer den rohen Schnittlauch vertilgt haha)
Ich komme aus Kanada. Meine Familie stammt aus dem östlichen Teil Kanadas. Eine Sache, die mich als Kind traumatisiert hat, war ein Gericht, das "Seehundkuchen" hieß. Es war sehr wild und ich konnte mir nicht vorstellen, so ein süßes Tier zu essen. Ich bekam Magenschmerzen. Bäh!!
Der einzige Grund, warum Sie es nicht mochten, war, dass Sie wussten, was Sie aßen, es gibt keinen wilden Geschmack. Nicht mehr als Rindfleisch. Sie könnten Elchkuchen haben, meine französische Familie in Kanada macht es "Tourtière"

Depends, where you're going. In the cities there's probably a lot of Asian restaurants or Delis, but in small villages, if you are going to try rural cuisine, it's another thing. I once tried hammock in Scotland. Don't need that no more.

The only other alternatives I can come up with might be haddock but it's eaten the same way in Scotland as it is in many other countries as far as I can ascertain. Either a spelling issue or auto correct issue but hammock isn't a food.

Eis? Das erinnert mich daran, als wir mit einigen Freunden meiner Tochter ins Eiscafé gegangen sind. Da war ein Schweizer dabei. Und er fand das total seltsam. Er meinte, bei ihnen gäbe es keine Eiscafés. Das wäre bei ihnen in den normalen Konditoreien dabei. Aber sie hätten auch nicht die große Auswahl.
Der Hering im Pelzmantel ist doch der beste russische Salat!!!
Und übrigens, ich finde es sehr gut, dass in Deutschland auch die Innereien vom Tier gegessen werden. Man muss nur wissen, wie man sie lecker zubereiten kann. Es muss nicht immer ein Steak sein und alles andere weggeworfen werden, wenn man schon Fleisch isst!
Hering mit Rote Beete wird auch in Hamburg gegessen.
Es gibt ja den Heringssalat zu kaufen, mit rote Bete und Sahne. Ich liebe den. 😄

Ich habe vor vielen Jahren ein Praktikum in einer Firma in Norddeutschland gemacht und in der Kantine gab es oft Hering oder Heringssalat mit roten Beeten. Ich fand den Geschmack sehr stark, salzig, sehr komisch für jemanden nicht daran gewohnt. Ansonsten schmeckt deutsches Essen generell ganz gut. Grüße aus Südamerika.
Interessant, ich muss ehrlich sagen, das ich an manchen Tagen den starken Drang auf diesen salzigen, eingelegten Fisch in "schwerer" Soße mit einer süßen Note habe. Am liebsten dann mit gekochten Kartoffeln oder dunklem Brot. Da fällt mir neben Hering auch noch Matjesfilet mit Soße nach Hausfrauen-Art, oder auch stark verwandt und vegetarisch: gekochte Eier mit Senfsoße. Das ist definitiv eine Gruppe norddeutscher Gerichte und ein ganz besonders norddeutsches Geschmackserlebnis und ich kann verstehen, dass man diesen Geschmack sehr mögen muss um diese Gerichte zu genießen :)
@@rollingdear2165 In meiner Gegend ist Leberbrot und Wurstebrot noch bekannt. Weiter nördlich Knipp. Wurstebrot ist nicht so mein Fall aber gebratene Leberbrotscheibe mit Bratkartoffeln mag ich gerne.

Ich war damals einmal Unterwegs nach Venezia im Wien gehaltet.Es war spät am Abend, ich musste 2 Uhr warten auf meinen Nachzug, also wollte ein bisschen anqucken mir Wien im Weinachtslicht... als ich hatte riesen Hunger. Alles war geschlossen, nur einen Hot-Dog verkaufer hab ich an Strasse gefunden, und war ich echt froh davon, weil ich habe damals den Hot-dog echt geliebt. Also schnell hab ich einen gekauft, und der Verkäufer hat mich gefragt :mit Ketchup oder mit Mayonesse? Mit Sanf! Hab ich laut geantwortet, also ich bin ungarisch, natürlich mit Sanf, mit sehr viel Sanf, doppelt bitte... er hat an mich als verrückt geschaut, und ich habe meine echt teuer Hot-dog bekommen, in halb dunkel, und mit vollhertz geschmackt, und... es landet im erste Mühl... es war mit WEISWURTS... es hat mich schokiert wie es schneckt... 🤣 Hier, im Ungern machen wir den Wurst mit Paprika und Knoblau, und es ist oft scharf, ein Teilungarische Leidenschaft, und dann kam diese.. Tragedie 😅🤗

Heute esse ich praktisch alles. Einige Gemüse mit starkem Eigengeschmack (Sellerie, Kohlrabi...) oder praktisch ohne Eigengeschmack (Aubergine, Kürbis) nur gedämpft und wenig gewürzt aber immer noch nicht wirklich. Hängt alles von der Zubereitung ab.
Meine Mutter hat Zucchini extrem gross werden lassen (also eher Zuccotto...) und dann zu allem Überfluss in grossen Würfeln gedämpft. Die Textur hat bei mir physisch Brechreiz ausgelöst. Meine eigene Ratatouille mag ich aber sehr.
Ich kann keine Menudo Suppe essen aber Pozole Suppe ist Toll. Ich lebe in Texas...natürlich.
Ich mag weder Kuhhirn noch Shafhirn, aber mag Ich Dollma ( eine spezialität aus Iraq und braucht mann Reis , einige Gemüseblätter und Hackfleich um Dollma zu zu bereiten )… Vielen Dank für dieses Video.

Ich habe Froschschenkel vor mehr als 40 Jahren auf der "Maxim Gorki" (ehem. TS "Hamburg" - ich habe da gearbeitet) gegessen. Die waren so groß wie Hähnchenkeulen und schmeckten sehr zart - etwas zwischen Fisch und Hähnchen. War das lecker!
Als ich in DE war, hab ich auch ganz viel Brot mit Nutella und Erdbeermarmelade gegessen, meine Gastfamilie fand es immer zu süß 😂

Great video. But a small English translation point. One person said “es schmekt wie Erde”. You translated as earth. But in English we would say in that context “it tastes like dirt”.
@@vomm yes. But in that example the person was says that beets literally taste like dirt. Also, a garden is made of dirt. So in that case the person is saying beets taste like dirt. “Erde” also means earth as in the planet we live on. And one does sometimes say earth instead of dirt. So the non-literal translation of “dirt” would be “very bad”. As in “that boy treats his girlfriend like dirt.” Phew. Isn’t language great ?
Isn't "soil" the correct word? I can never understand that English has the same word for soil (which you grow plants in) and dirt (anything which makes e.g.your clothes dirty). Plant soil is not dirty in this meaning.
@@svergurd3873 "tastes like dirt" is an idiomatic phrase. You wouldn't say "tastes like soil". Also, dirty items can also be called "soiled".
@@tmrobertson Thanks. Right, "soiled" has the same connection as "dirt". What do you call the stuff you grow plants in in a flowerpot or in your garden?? For me it sounds very strange to have the same word for filth and this material. It is two completely different things as I see it (as non-native English speaker).
