  • 12 Gauge Winchester Super-X 1oz Rifled Slugs ballistics gel test fired from a Mossberg 500 Retrograde pump action shotgun with 18 inch smooth-bore barrel.
    Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
    Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 50 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

    Cool video Mason!
As a moose guide, I've seen a pile of black bear, caribou and moose dropped with the 2 3/4" version of this slug up here in Canada. I have since switched over to Federal's Truball Deep Penetrator slugs and have been impressed with their performance.
Would love to see you test those in gel!

In my experience, rifled slugs tend to get very good accuracy out of an improved cylinder choke, maybe give that a try and see if it helps!

Thanks for conducting this test. I've seen others where the slugs were fired at relatively close range, and they tended to overexpand or fragment to pieces. Which resulted in considerably less penetration.

Always been my experience that 2 3/4 slugs are more constant with accuracy. With a rifled barrel even more so... Ithaca 37 deer slayer is basically a tack driver at 50 yards.

When it comes to foster slugs, i’ve seen modified cylinders do better than improved cylinders and full chokes do worse than cylinders, Improved done a little better than cylinder.
I always prefer 2 3/4” over 3” no matter the situation. The accuracy has always been an issue for me and others and the recoil might would be worth it if there was a benefit to shots on target but I prefer shots on target and lower recoil than a hail Mary that kicks harder than Justin Gaethje

I only shoot the 2.75" inch Winchester slugs out of my 28" vent rib Remington 870, with a cylinder bore choke tube. I consistently get a 3 shot "clover leaf" group at 50 yards and they have great knock down power!! I can't get Remington slugs to group with a darn, go figure!!

It is interesting to note that the billed velocity increase between the two was just about spot on. If you found a choke that got them shooting straight, the magnums would kill anything walking.

I have one if the 18.5 Chinese target sports barrels on my Mossberg w/ IC choke and it shoots the 3" with a pretty respectable pattern.
CDNN target sports barrels are the only 18.5 Mossberg barrels I know of that take chokes.
The factory ones are cylinder bore.

I always found the difference was I got thumped around more for no reason with 3” Winchester slugs and deer died just as fast with the 2 3/4” slugs.
My 870 loves the 2 3/4” 1oz. Winchester slugs, didn’t care too much for any of the Remington Sluggers.
If you can find the 3” Black Magic slugs they are like the pinnacle of rifled slugs. They are going to recoil and they are not cheap.

These things compare pretty good to big bore muzzleloaders and black powder rifle cartridges. That bore size and 2 feet of penetration with good weight retention makes these Super X slugs serious deer 🦌 or bear 🐻 or pig 🐷 hunting ammo.

after testing slug 12 ga shells and hunting with them for so lomg that winchester is my least favorites. federal and Remington my favorites. I've noticed the Winchester slugs when shooting rapidly the recoil pushing slugs farther back in the shells. i could shake the shells from my6 shot pump shotgun and fell and hear slug movement. and this most definitely has affected accuracy greatly. for years i used a 3×9 scope off sandbags testing. Winchester 12 slugs got to the point in testing accuracy that i only use one shell in the firearm at a time getting wonderful accuracy even at 75 yds with grandpas old high standard police issue with scope. with my mossberg 500 scoped 12 ga shooting crisco cans no problem 100yd. but federal or Remington slugs same shotguns loading 6 shells in shotguns a rarely had slugs backup in shells. papa wishing you well 😊

Between federal, remington, and winchester, they always sway to the left or right, remington some how goes up and down at 10 yard, this is coming out of a smoothbore 22inch barrel, browning gold hunter, im looking for a fully rifle barrel at this moment as sabot tends to be more accurate these day

To my understanding, shotgun barrel length doesn’t affect velocity anywhere near handgun or rifle barrel length differences do. I’ve seen experiments concluding about 7 fps slower per inch of barrel. So even using an 18” barrel like you were, I’d think your velocities would be closer to the advertised 1600 and 1760 listed on the box than what you were getting. Does that matter all that much for slugs? Probably not. But it would sure be nice to get the ballistics they advertise

  • @davidstrickler6570

If your bore is a smooth bore, then is it really a slug gun?
Using a rifled slug gun, you should try Winchester gold partition two and three-quarter inch. Three inch doesn't groop very well.

SuperX 3" slugs deform on impact into bizarre shapes and travel through into random areas of whitetail deer..normal hole on one side normal hole on other side during broadside impact, quartering away impacts deflect in all sorts of directions .
Remington 3"on the other hand seems to either travel slower or the slug is a harder and plow straight through and I have never recovered one in a whitetail

  • @cooljets
    @cooljets Před 3 měsíci

I've noticed that magnum loads in a short barrel tend to be inaccurate due to excessive muzzle blast which causes the slug or shot to disperse more than a lighter loading. IMHO.

I always found the 2 3/4 vs 3" slugs interesting because the ones I use in 20ga are the same velocity so.. what's the point in going 3", odd right? I have those same win slugs in 12ga.

For fat, heavy hollow points, I was expecting more expansion & permanent wound track. But who knows, maybe that’s not what you want when hunting with these.
Also, even though the billed FPS on the 3” magnums is only 160 more FPS, that actually makes a HUGE difference in muzzle energy -over 500 ft-lbs! In other words, despite being only a 10% increase in speed, the energy increases by 21%. As they say, speed-even a marginal increase-kills! (And obviously that’s the same in your case out of the shorter barrel)
