It's all about context. There are people out there that would just say racist, bigoted, etc. to be mean spirited and claim they were being funny. Rickles is an "insult" comic that gleefully flirts with that line but doesn't cross it.

@Steve Jobs Not sure how old you are, Mr. Jobs, but Don Rickles was essentially 'insulting' anyone and everyone right up until his flame was extinguished. Your ass is obviously wrong. Don Rickles was known as The Merchant of Venom, and Mr. Warmth - the second moniker coined by late-night talk show legend, Mr. Johnny Carson, for whom Rickles guest-hosted, covering The Late Show deus many times. The media never attacked him, and not all comedians insult. Rickles was well-respected, and a cut above the rest. There's been no better insult comic before Don, and there assuredly won't be one again.

The thing about Don Rickles is he is politically incorrect, but everybody KNOWS he's gonna be politically incorrect so nobody takes him seriously. He's an equal opportunity offender - nobody is immune. He's an old fashioned Jew and they take the brunt of a lot of his material. It's very old school, from a time when words alone weren't enough to offend if the intention to offend or discriminate wasn't there. The last little monologue, however, is the REAL Don Rickles - one of the kindest, gentlest men you'd ever want to meet.

Pardon me, Not true. I live in a so-called “PC liberal state”. There are subtle lines and too many comedians cross them these days. Much of what Rickles did was the same schtick that he’d in his act for over 60 years so people excused it. Much of his humor was also self deprecating, which also blunted the impact.

Rickles, you are and always will be my favourite comedian of all time. My pop introduced me to you in the eighties. He told me one thing. Never to take you seriously, you love everyone and treat everyone the same. But he always told me to pay attention to your message at the end because that is the true Don Rickles. Once again your message at the end was loud and clear. You will be my idol forever.

Great days when we could laugh together and not take offence. The legend Don Rickles roasted anyone and everyone without an ounce of malice. The woke brigade would have him cancelled if they could. What a sad society we now live in.

Never can be replaced, emulated or equaled. Rickles created a comic style made up on the spot - instant, unscripted healing hilarity!

When he delivers his punch lines like “look at this guy laughing his ass off “ then switches the voice to a statement “I bet your partner is up in my room takin my jewelry” then immediately says “I’ll tell ya this though” is the funniest shit ever. Total command of the stage and audience and jokes but ad libbing/ thinking on his feet. No one in comedy history did what he did, or gets even miles close to his brilliance and quickness. It’s a remarkable skill and has to be timed perfectly with the right/sarcastic funny inflection or none of this works.

I love how when Don comes on the stage, he acknowledges the audience with a smile, and he gives Billy, Whoopi, and Robin the bulldog look. I swear he must've been thinking, "I'm going to rip these three apart, and have them laughing at the same time." America lost a talented man when Don passed.

See...if Don had stayed nasty, he would never have made it. The true man shined through the exaggerations and caricatures and stereotypes. When he said, "God bless you."...that was Don. When he gave his heartfelt speech at the end, that was Mr. Warmth. He was a hockey puck..but he was a good man.

Don was quite unique. Most guys doing this kind of humor today only manage to be offensive, because they are talentless hacks. The art of insulting without offending is not for everything. Most of these people today WANT to offend, and still expect others to find it funny.

I love Rickles and Williams equally as much, two of my top five favorite comedians ever, and easily among the most brilliant. But, I have to say, Don's slap was so god damn smooth and flawless that, sorry to say Robin (as I look to comedy heaven), Don really owned you for a second there. As professional as Robin, of course, is with the art of comedy and slapstick, I don't think he saw that coming. Two geniuses cross paths, love both of you, the world isn't the same without you.
