i always watch art gcse sketchbooks and everyone’s is always amazing and so creative and then mine is just crap. but what annoys me about my art gcse sketchbook is that my school isn’t a creative arts school so they don’t put their money towards art supplies unlike other school around my area so we don’t have a lot of resources to experiment with. also my teacher doesn’t give us any freedom whatsoever and if we have an idea she will change it and make it her own but completely change the original idea we had. and another thing all the work we have done is in one sketchbook (through year 9 and year 10) and there isn’t a clear division between the two and since the sketchbooks go towards our coursework it’s very messy and unprofessional looking but my teacher won’t do anything about it and she writes over our books.
Yup same here we have no freedom like one part was just draw shells... like tf but tbf our art teacher is quite nice

I love watching your videos cuz I'm in year 9 and our art teacher told us to keep a summer sketchbook and ur vids really inspire me. everyone says that GSCE art is so hard but u make it look so easy. when our teacher was showing us some y11s work, it looked really complicated. I'm really excited to begin my art GCSEs lol.

Your sketchbook is so beautiful and full! It’s so good! my topic is past present and future too but I’m really stuck. I like your idea and I was just going to ask, do you have to link to anything? For example if you do packaging you link to food? Because my art teacher keeps saying I have to link things but I see everyone on CZcams not linking and then getting A*s. And then when u link u come completely off the topic of past present and future. Is that allowed? Sorry for the essay my GCSEs are this year.
Thank you so much!! From the comments I have received before it seems like different schools teach art very differently. In my school we were told that as long as our ideas linked to the theme (so past present and future in this case), then it was fine to do. You could link to other things too but I would always try and link back to the topic/theme to show you have thought about it and make your ideas clear. So basically what I'm trying to say is whatever ideas you have I would always explain how it could link to 'past present and future'. Hope that helps! xx

Yes this is fine art, I’m not sure exactly but I think there was 3 of us who got A*s but a lot of people got As. Art is a lot of work but as long as you stay on top of it it’s fine! X

Glad you enjoyed my videos! For me personally art was both the most fun but also the most time consuming, but in my school my textiles class got messed around a bit with a change of teacher halfway through my GCSE which stressed us out so its kind of difficult for me to give an opinion. I would recommend your daughter takes whichever she currently enjoys the most as they are both nearly equally as time consuming

this art work is amazing, and i understand that certain things in the curriculum have changed, but I'm confused as to how this sketchbook got full marks as your journey in this sketchbook isn't very linear at all, but isn't a linear journey what's demanded of an exam sketchbook as you have much less time to do it than compared to your coursework? I'm asking this out of curiosity as I'm in the process of beginning my exam.
Thank you! I agree this isn't very linear and at the time I didn't really see it but now I wish I had made it more linear or explained my though process more! I think marking can vary a lot and which exam board you are on makes a difference to the work the markers expect to see, so maybe look at the marking breakdown for you exam board to see exactly what they are looking for! x

Is your second page where you have Marilyn Monroe etc secondary research? As although you’ve created them you’ve copied it? (I get so confused with primary and secondary)
Umm I guess it would be secondary research because it was something I copied x
How do you write so much for the about each piece?? I never know what to write
There's a few areas that I always make sure to write about! I will always talk about the composition (layout), lighting, subject matter, links with my theme, possible meanings and subliminal messages of the piece and sometimes about the artist x

I’m going into yr 9 and I’m so scared 😫 Idk whether I should take art or nottt and if I don’t. Idk what other subject I’d choose cuz I hate every subject!!😫😭😭😭😭😭

This sketchbook is amazing. I know this is a few years old, but what do you use to cover your pencil drawings to stop it smudging?
Thank you so much! For pencil drawings I spray hairspray over the top to stop it smudging. For chalk pieces I would also recommend covering with tracing paper if it's in a sketchbook so it prevents it transferring onto the other side x

Where do you buy your sketchbooks from?
I got mine from school, but you can get them from craft shops like hobby craft as well x
do you have to draw people in art gcse ? i really dont want to have to because i am not good at it
We didn't have to, we were lucky in our school as we were given quite a lot of freedom to draw whatever we wanted to x
how were you able to make the pages fold in and out like you did on your mind map?
I just used clear tape to stick extra pieces of paper to the side of my book pages x
whats the material you put over most your drawings like shiny ???
It's called acetate. It's basically a sheet of clear, thin plastic

is there a certain meaning behind your final piece? is it necessary to have a "deeper meaning" or can we just choose to draw any thing
You don't necessarily have to have a 'deep' meaning, but it may be good to have kind of a story behind it and why it links to the theme you have been given. For example, the theme for me was 'past present and/or future' so I linked my final piece to the idea of childhood as these were the kinds of sweets I had and my mum had growing up- we enjoyed these in the past but still have them in the present
Was that an A4 sketchbook? Mine is an A3 which I guess yours is as well and it's very different to what u had to do. I'm still doing it. And this is amazing!.

Should I do art GCSE I’m in year 9 but my friend told me you have to do loads of artist history and I don’t like that idea tbh
Depends, if you really love art then yes but if it only mildly then try keep away from it coz personally, I only liked art a bit and after taking art gcse I officially hate art coz of how stressful it actually was

Rachel C yeah I’m not doing it and non of my friends are so chances are I’ll just be alone and yeah I’m in year 9 :p

We were allowed our sketchbooks in the exam yes x
How many times a week did you get to do art?(like in school time) x
I'm pretty sure we had it twice a week during GCSEs x

At our school we get GCSE art 3 times a week
We have 3 50 minute lessons a week in my school. But some days you have double art which is 2 lessons in a row

Yeah I just use tape!
Was it stressful ?
At times, yes, it could be stressful to meet deadlines but at times I found all my subjects challenging and art was quite often the subject I would look forward to so I could de-stress x

I'm really sorry I've been trying to look for it but can't find it! It was one my teacher gave to me so I'm not sure where she got it from x
How long did this book take you to finish?
I think I started it at the end of January and finished it by April x

What if you’re not very good at art, can you still pass?
Everyone is good at art its just about finding the right style for you! You will have the opportunity to try lots of things at GCSE and practice a lot so you should be fine! xx
