I listened and hung out with Neil back in Atlanta in the 70's and 80's and I listened to Greg and Warren and hung out with in Atlanta and Macon and Jax in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's and I listened to and watched Dave in the 80s and the 90s in Athens. I'm sitting here 2024 with all my brothers and sisters dying and it makes me feel sad, but watching this show in MSG makes me feel much better. I've seen Cortez the Killer before, so many times, at little stages and at the big circuses, but this was truly an excellent rendition. Warren, Dave, and Tim look so happy and that makes me feel glad. Unfortunately, I think to myself that there are very few of us left. God bless you guys Knocking on heaven's door... Peace love and the Grateful... Keep the faith no matter what happens 00/00
God bless brorher, I have listened to Neil Young since my early teens, got to see him play numerous times in Ireland where I live, in 2019 he played in Kilkenny where I live on the same bill as Bob Dylan, they preformed together for one song on stag, Dreams came true at that moment, I had just survived a brain tumour and I was one of the first concert back attending. God bless and take care. Brenny
@@brenny2506 thank you, for sharing Brenny. One of my best friends in my teens in Georgia was Irish, I believe, from Mayo County, but I am not sure. I'm Italian and he's Irish and we hit it off pretty well and for a long time. We went to many shows across the southeast United States. I too, have had a major injury from a fall in the mountains. I get around good though, I'm thankful to Jesus Christ to be alive. I still get around well and hopefully, have a decade or two left in me, lord willin'. I've always wanted to see Van Morrison and The Chieftains. I imagine you have had a chance to see them many times. Anyway, keep in touch. I'll try to figure out a way to give you my email. KTF,JB✌️

The best Cortez the Killer I've ever heard. Music is magic. It reaches the deepest levels of the soul. Kudos!
My little sister died on Christmas Eve morning this year. She was a music promoter in Portland Oregon a while back. She lost one of her legs due to a tragedy, and never really regained her self-confidence after that. And she always wanted to 'dance with the dolphins'. I can't imagine a more fitting tribute to someone who so selflessly spent her life trying to help everyone she loved in life (me especially...and we used to be 'boogie-partners' back in our youth...a million years ago). I picture her now as a beautiful spirit 'walking across the water' with her arms outstretched...and 'her legs are straight and strong'. .Thank-you for this.
Im so sorry, its going to be ok.
Damn I can't Imagine how much that hurts 😢
Wow your story so moved me when you think of how difficult this journey and the most undeserving circumstances occur that affect you directly , you have to ask yourself …what is my fate that I to endure and experience such sorrow …. ??? And as I listen to this for the first time , I am moved by your connection and comment s.. bless you … it some times defies reason but music has this magical power to ameliorate theses disturbances … and tragedies ! Music reflects our humanity to heal educate and become the amazing partner in our journey that is so magical and a gift for all no of us to embrace !!! My deepest sympathies to you !!❤😢

There is no doubt in the reason that everyone wants to play with Warren Haynes.. he’s simply incredible!!!!
One of the best😁
Warren was the backbone of what was left of the Allmann Brothers. I give Derrric Trucks a thumbs up as well.
I love his cool spirit! He's my favorite!
Can't believe this iconic ballad was so masterfully done with two incredible slide virtuosos by Reynolds and Haynes
The gods are rejoicing
❤❤❤
Wow
i find myself coming back to this song and listening to it over and over again...not wanting it to end. Listen with headphones...amazing
Same here John Cortez, with headphones no doubt!
These 2 together are utter perfection. This is in the top 5 of my favorite songs of all time. But, in my opinion, when Dave & Warren did this song in the Central Park Concert, it was much better. The video is here on CZcams
Fuk. I'm getting my headphones! I've listened to this about a dozen times, but not with my phones.
Oh man❤️❤️❤️
I'll give this a shot with headphones than. Along with Dire Straits 'Brothers in Arms'. Thank you.
There are slow lead guitar players, fast lead guitar players, guys who can shred, and guys everywhere in between...and then there are guys like this who play with so much feeling and soul that it takes you to a different mindset.
I was laying in a hospital bed with covid in April, and scanned my CZcams for some rock.....I happened upon Cortez, and I swear to God that it made me want to get out of that place and live gain! Sound ridiculous but Warren Haynes guitar lifted me.....and Im here to tell the tale. I will be a DMB fan for the rest of my days. Thank you You Tube for making this vid available......Just the best!!!!
You should check out Govt Mule, or Warren's solo stuff, it's how I imagine heaven sounds.
I wish you all the best ! I had covid too ! I got over it almost! Music like this is beautiful ! Hugs and Greetings from Kiel Germany!
Music is magical!
Wish I would have thought of this sooner. Speedy recovery from a fellow survivor! Mine was real bad. I have a new outlook on life. Glad to hear you are doing fine. Music is so healing. 🧡

This song makes my heart cry, the lyrics, the chords, the musicians... Thank you Neil, Dave, Warren and band members.
This is honestly unreal. Everything fit. Everything grooved. There aren't many words to describe this performance.Wow.
That's the best I can do.
In my opinion, this is the best performance Warren has ever given. He slays the inner guitar in us all.
Watch him do shine on you crazy diamond. Plays it all his own but it is still perfect. Best warren that I have found.
Don't care which is best - you two argue that out. I'm just going to the playground to hear the sliding(Warren), the classical touches(Tim), and singing (Dave). The rest are great, too
Never saw Dave's bass player so serious...darn good player, drummer i love always, those keyboards..Come on. Thanks Neil Young, they did this so so FANTASTIC you went down in History AGAIN!!! 🌿

Liking is subjective but may I kindly suggest this version, which I think kick ass to all other cover versions: czcams.com/video/6QjIHnb5Ivs/video.html
GOT THAT RIGHT, BROTHER!!! 🕴🏾🕴🏾🕴🏾
The more I watch Warren Haynes the more in awe I am of his talent.
He plays great and not too bad of a singer either.
Warren is grossly underrated!!!!!!!!

Fantastic beautiful simply said- mesmerising sounds! I would go nuts 🥜 witnessing live such a performance 🎭!
Some quite Righteous Guitar 🎸 picking here. I would love to see Butch Trucks play a slide verse of this one...
I love Warren's technique.
Dave Matthews is showing serious signs of why him & his band are brilliant 👌
The tightest band in existence
I don't disagree on any level, DMB have been my favorite band since I first heard them in the early 90s. But there is way more than that going on here. Sure, there's the band, and of course Dave... but then Warren Haynes adds a whole great vibe and energy, AND it's a Neil Young tune. This performance is a crunchy jam sammich.
Of course Warren and the guitar boys are magic that we can’t forget the beat of that drummer and very talented keyboard player! My hats off to one of the best jam sessions I have ever heard! Masterful !
Cortez the killer is by far my favorite song by Neil young...and dmb nails it with help from warren Haynes. Back in the day Mr Haynes hosted a New years Eve jam party there in asheville, NC. I was fortunate enough to make the cut back in '91. I don't recall the line up. Only warren locking the doors at 2am?
Monumental!!!
Who is playing keys? I agree ❤
@@vansullivan236 That would Buddy Strong on the keys... newest member since roughly mid-2018 when they released "Come Tomorrow" and then he joined them full-time since as a defacto replacement for Boyd Tinsley. Buddy also sings back grounds on several songs as well shares vocals with Dave on a few tracks from the newest album released this past May.
Simply sensational. One of the greatest cover versions I ever heard in my life. Uncle Neil did a fine job creating the song. This one by DMB is awesome. Warren Haynes ... beautiful.
THE best cover of this song ever made. One of my all time favorite Neil Young songs and this cover is amazing. Props to everyone in the Dave Matthews band and Warren's legendary guitar work.
Просто охренеть. Очень забористый рок.
Yes, i came here to say just that - best cover ever of Cortez the Killer. 🌿
Check out the Grace Potter and Stevie Vai cover of this song.
sorry grace potter and joe Satriani
Warren & Marc Ford is the best imho.
Look, I’ve been a fan since I was 15 and yesterday was my birthday. Cortez means just as much today as it did in my most vulnerable age. I’m 46. It’s just as amazing. The message is right. Always has been. DMB. Wow.
One of the very finest pieces of art I have seen in so long. I hate to say it but he took Neil’s beautiful anthem and almost made it his own.
Love me some Neil Young
Me too......
From what I've read, his is a prodigy. What a gift he has given us. Beautiful........
If this doesn't grab you down deep where you live....check your pulse. The words, the guitars and the performance are beyond description.

This is the apex of mankind and music. I've never seen live music done better.
Such a soaring work. Love Neil Young’s original. LOVE this cover. Also a BIG fan of the version on CZcams of Grace Potter singing this with Joe Satriani on guitar and Willy Waldman tearing it to pieces on flugelhorn in support. More than most compositions, this seems to seriously inspire musicians to move things to the next level. It’s like magic.
Thanks for the additional reco. Grace Potter is brutal! wow...
I’m glad you mentioned the Grace Potter/Satriana version. Joe’s guitar soars on that version
The best Neil Young cover I've ever heard. I was hoping for Neil Young to end the song with a cameo. It wasn't needed.
Blues at all !!!!
The trumpet in the grace Potter cover is mind blowing
I've seen this 100 times and it still knocks me out every single time

It's so much better than NEIL YOUNG
Was there for it. Best 20 min of music I have heard in a long time
A spiritual experience truly
Absolutely

I think about songs I can listen to 24/7. This is one of them.
This is the stuff that gets me higher than any drug. Hard to find such gems today. I found one right here.
The trick is not just to listen to it, but to FEEL it inside. Let your body sway with the beat and your mind move with the rest. Experience it with your entire being, and you will be in audio-Heaven.

Amen brother, just "let go" and let it take you down the river of sweet licks and guitar picks. 🎷🎶🌫️🕉️
let your mind rest in the moves
I was thinking the exact same thing.
The beauty of this performance is that DMB listens to the people who sit in with them and let them shine (they always have), but Warren Haynes is listening to EVERYONE in the band and not trying to shit on them by overplaying. It's just real solid egoless musicianship all around.
True that man. Very well said
Dude, you definitely Get It.
Amen to That!
Warren has been such a great asset to legendary groups like Grateful Dead, no band forces you to listen to the entire process like GD 🌟🌟

Really been trying since septevrrtt morning
I had a bar in Saigon and everyday my first customer was a native American guy from New Mexico. With his first beer he would request this song. I never got tired of it
When was that?
Absolutely one of my top favorites to listen to can't listen to this enough. Thank you guys brings tears to my eye everytime job well done.
The best cover of the Neil Young's best music!!!
i want to agree with ya but i have heard different genres all are special in ways and sound pretty darn good to me. we all rock
Warren Haynes and Tim Reynolds jamming together is everything.
Warren is "THE" man. Dude can make some of these classics sound so great. Most under-rated guitar player in the world. I had been listening and thought something sounded familiar,, and decided to watch the video, and immediately saw why the leads & vocals were so awesome, and familiar. I'm pushin 70, and Hayes is passing all the great ones I've seen and heard through the yrs. My daughter turned me on to DMB yrs ago, and thought I would see how they covered this. I was floored, andI listened almost everyday, until I decided to watch the dang video. Thanks DMB for posting this cover.
Im 67 and I agree
Should be mandatory listening for every young person ....lifetime of appreciation for real music, much thanks to bringing beauty to this crazy world. The power of live music is unbelievable, those that listen to modern fake musicians(??) will likely not appreciate the artistry of the lyrics and fundamental awesomeness of musical talent on display

I love the version of this, “live in central park“. It still has Warren Haynes as the guest guitarist playing with them, and there is an absolutely magical camera shot during one of his guitar solos. If you watch it, there’s a camera shot over the drummers right shoulder, looking through the symbols at Dave. During that little camera shot, you can read Dave’s lips, as he is talking to Carter. You can make it a clear his day. He says “holy shit“ in reaction to Warren just killing it.
No way!? Looking it up right now
Central Park version is even better than this one.
My favorite as well

You grow up fast filling in for Duane.....and playing beside Dickie. Most underrated musician alive IMO and one of my favorite songs from Neil. A real pickers tune. Excellent....just excellent.
Duane was irreplaceable 😢
To think Rolling Stone magazine left gim off there top 100 guitar players at the time this video was made. I believe they have been shamed to add him now though
Omg that god someone else mentions the Great Duane Allman and dicky... I'm watching all these comments talk about this guitar player in that guitar player and not one of them mentioning the fact that Warren Haynes had to fill Duane Allman's shoes and then be able to stand up next to dicky and keep up

So rare to find musicianship of such exhilarating calibre ...and then there's the song itself...Thank you Neil.
The original is from Neil Young. And i still believe that's the coolest version of this song. But this one is also pretty good.
The original DMB and WH version of this has been on Utube since 2011....it has over 150k views.....it's a classic....dare I say arguably better than this version.
Thank you Neil for this gem years ago!
Neil did it so much better
I think some people are listening to this and not realising it's paying homage to Neil not trying to improve upon or compete.
I'm 200 years old, a veteran of the Civil War. This is quite good
Thank you Neil for the song and thank you DMB for doing it justice 👍
Warren Haynes made this song his own! Neil would be proud.
Great guitar playing from Warren as always. And I love the interaction between him, the other guitar player (makes Warren smile), and the keyboards. But two things REALLY make this song (and any good performance) 1. LISTENING to each other more than yourself, and 2. DYNAMICS - knowing how to bring it down and bring it back up again. Kudos to DM for allowing this to happen.
The other guitar player is Tim Reynolds

Just cannot stop playing this, sends shivers down my spine!
You must find Neil and Crazy Horses long version. It will blow you away. This was awesome, but the man that wrote it tears it up.
F*CK YES!!
Cortez is the penultimate Neil song. It starts slowly... builds... draws you in... and at the end you're completly spent. I've heard plenty of other renderings of it by artists other than the origninator, but IMO this one is the most superb of all covers. It does it justice. QUALITY all-around. If you can't get into this you might as well be dead inside. Brilliant performance. The last 3 minutes are mind-blowing.
Fuck. Epic!

There is no way in hell that anyone could ever be as incredibly talented as these great musicians on this stage!! I would die and go to heaven and hell to see them all just once or twice 🤣❤️

Warren Haynes is a Merlin with a guitar. Pure genius and soulful emotion! Tee Gods what a sample of creation!
God I love the guitars. It's so cool when I can close my eyes and know who's playing. And nothing, absolutely nothing speaks to me, heart and soul, like music does.
Here we go..... I did not care for Dave Mathews before. Then I, stumbled upon Neil Youngs, "Cortez the killer" Man, many props going out to Dave and, Warren Haynes!!!! Yall, got it going on!! A Neil Young fan forever. ♡
