Noel may not be as popular now but he is so great here. Brings back great memories of sitting round the telly back in the day as a kid. Nothing like the crap on TV now. Bit of trivia for you all, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway takes most of its ideas from Noel's house party. FACT
... And Noel took most of his ideas from Game For A Laugh and Beadle....
There's a little bit of Morecambe and Wise thrown in for good measure too. And Don't Forget Your Toothbrush. In fact, I don't see anything original about it at all. They're quite upfront about where it drew its inspiration, and I sort of respect reviving old formulas for a new generation. But it doesn't do anything unique with it all, and I don't really like them just taking from old shows and not giving anything new. Takeaway's alright I suppose, but I struggle to see why its as big a deal as it is. I find it a bit mechanical, a bit generic. House Party may have borrowed ideas, Grab A Grand from the end game of The Crystal Maze, the gunge tank from millions of kids shows, Gotcha's from Beadle, but it did it in a style which was new and fresh. And it did innovate with NTV, a revolution in what was possible on TV for the time.
I miss these times. Early 90's.. Great TV
Incredible. Remember watching this all those years ago. I quite liked The Saturday Roadshow, so was drawn to this right from the off.
Watching this now, it's crystal clear how the show completely derailed in the later years. Here, there's no hysterics, one nice little item after another, Noel looking enthusiastic, and a sense of calm confidence in the quality of the production.
Turn the clock forward to series 6 and 7, and you all you got was a surreal whirlwind of noise, explosions, stunts, Blobby, OTT pranks, and Noel looking increasingly cheesed off and unimpressed.
Incidentally, there's a hilarious 'Ave A Banana, during The Lyric Game.
97channel and gunge!
97channel The camera ops during Grab A Grand were a lot less energetic in this first episode too... Though save for a few minor changes later on in the first series, it's a solid start.
97channel Indeed; this first show illustrates that NHP had a well defined and constructed framework from the very outset - probably as a result of extensive piloting and, as you point out, the fact that several of the big set pieces were just transferred straight from the Saturday Roadshow.
I do remember NTV seeming like a stunning feat when the show began - although the large family featured in this very first edition do seem to have been "prepared" to say the least.
Couldn't help also noticing the references to the Gotcha "Oscars" pre-cease and desist from the Academy of Motion Pictures - and the floor manager audibly reminding Noel to ask the Grab A Grand contestant the questions before starting the game.
I'd love to know what that disagreement was about between Edmonds and the BBC, which led to the pulling of an 1998 episode.
Essentially he refused to host the episode because he didn't think the content was good enough for him to front it on air.
He demanded that the BBC came up with new ideas and more money for each episode - and they gave in.
I was just a born infant when this came out 3 months old.
Oh thankyou so much. Brings back so many great memories. Ahhh the days before saturday tv turned to shite. Always liked Noel and his house party, i loved it as a kid. Channel 4 should bring it back as he has had great success on that channel since his comeback. Always thought he was quite natural, personable and funny. Don't understand the stick he gets from some.
It was on the BBC.
Great seeing a full episode!!
Any more would be superb thanks.

An historic moment in British TV History
you mean A historic moment, you cretin. But it's not; this is just The Late Late Breakfast show without audience members getting killed.

24:25 Rest in Peace Ronnie Corbett.

Oliver Boyle if only it were that simple! :) ;-)
+Jenny Smith New episode just uploaded.
A few thoughts: Noel hasn't settled on his classic position in front of the door at the start of the show, although that may be just to show the money box off.
The first and only time "Crinkley Bottom" got a laugh...
That pub game strand didn't last long, and quite right too, completely pointless in a live show.
The gunge tank isn't very well hidden, it's surprising she didn't spot it.
Grab a Grand is completely devoid of the wacky camera angles/lighting and audience shots it would get later on, and is quite a dull feature as a result.
That full screen credit roll disappeared pretty quick too when they realised they could squeeze a few more seconds out by running them along the bottom!
Mr Blobby appeared in the next series
Good Times👍🤣
the audience look absolutely bored to tears, in the view glimpses of them that the director dare give us.
11:30 RIP
Do you have the next episode of NOEL'S House Party please because I like it when they gunge someone but didn't like it at first but I like it now
+Robert Mcmath czcams.com/video/BWv11krTKbs/video.html
Have u got one on my birthday 4th January 1992 MCMXCII
+Robert Mcmath I'm not sure, probably not.
Have you got more gunging episodes of Noel's House Party eg Keith Harris
+Robert Mcmath i don't know, not seen them since I recorded them.
Why did the little girl start covering her own mouth? Was she holding her breathe?
i read somewhere that all this about "they dont know thier gonna be on NTV" was a load of crap
Thier was a full size camera crew a boom man standing behind the subjects telly and they were told to act surprised
Pauline and Linda are always up for a giggle, but having taken Letitia's place, Susan looks somewhat uncomfortable, and doesn't appear to be joining in much. Not exactly tricky songs are they!
she probably had better taste in music luv
Wonder what Jenny would be doing now
Derek Nelson Hi Derek, I'm Jenny. I've only just found this and find it hilarious! What a little terror I was back then! You can come see my youtube channel to see what I'm doing now.
someone's got a gunge fetish.
the next day Freddie mercury died
When I was 7 years old I thought the name Crinkley Bottom was hilarious 🥴. Oh dear.
Seriously though I thought Noel's House Party was great. I know Edmonds is a bit of a tw@ these days but this was classic Saturday night entertainment.
