Millennials Show Us What ‘Old’ Looks Like | Disrupt Aging

  • What age do you consider to be old? We posed that question to millennials in this social experiment and asked them to show us what “old” looks like. Then we introduced them to some real “old” people. Watch what happens when folks let go of their outdated beliefs and embrace the idea that aging is not about decline - it’s about growth. +Velda Modestti  When I saw the beginning of the video I thought holy ****. I had my daughter at 38 so at 16 I am 55. Honestly, I don't even feel 55 at least as young as 40's. I just went to my first concert in 30 years at 55 and it was a Korean pop(kpop) concert with coaxing from other fans my age and younger. I definitely need to get more fit. I want to be walking fast not slow in my old age.

***** I didn't deny that young people were immune to it but like you said yourself "young people are less likely to have health problems" that was my point. As you age there's more of a likelihood to gain more and more health/mental problems. Even if people want to play sometimes that's just not enough because of all the factors that come with aging limit our ability to do the things we once did in our youth.

    • @edl6398
      @edl6398 Před 7 lety +5

Actually, regarding mental health problems - that's just not true and not factual. You are far more likely to have mental health issues when you are young. The highest suicide rates are among the young. When you get older, you learn to let so much go - you learn from experience that it's not worth it.

I know people my age who act old and sickly and then my mom who is 55 runs around with my dad who is 56 like they are a bunch of teenagers! They look like they are in their 40s and I hope to look like them when I am their age! I just feel sorry for our society that we think it's horrible to get older. It's not. It's society that tries to make it that way. I like myself far better than I ever did when I was younger. The smart millennials are the ones who understand that age does not define a person. These are the men and women who will be successful in life. People over 45 are not invisible and are some of the best teachers you will ever have in your lives! This also goes for employers in the workforce that seem to think they only need young blood in the building. Companies that hire all ages will be around the longest because they get it! This includes all these new millennial businesses as well. It's not all about 18-35...Why not learn from people who have walked the walk of life? Yes, I'm old but I still have a lot to learn and have many experiences to teach others. It's not easy being a talk show host on CZcams with the young viewership freely making their opinionated comments, but I still persevere because I want to help others avoid making some of the life choices and mistakes that I did. Cheers to 50+!! Dear Sybersue xo

The tragic employment issue, no insurance benies, soon no SS, high college bills, low pay scales, competition from foreign workers and the result is poor loyalty, poor work ethic and a revolving door, They are trying to figure out where they belong. It is our society - more specifically the way advertisers promote products and services to younger people and forget everyone else. Once you enter your 30's you are forgotten about. Technology is also the problem and how it is marketed, do you see older people in a smart phone commercial? No, everyone is in their 20's or even younger. I never really cared about age, it is definitely how you feel and one thing I have noticed is that I have never stopped learning. I am more curious about everything than when I was in my 20's.

As you were a part of this video, I am curious if you know where they found these millennials? Because as a millennial myself, I don't understand how one could think 50 is particularly old or how you could mime a 50 year old as one hobbling on a cane (unless you were miming a 50 year recovering from a significant knee injury after a downhill skiing accident or something). That is unless, the millennials in the video never actually interact with anyone other than their own generation... including their own parents? My own father is in his 50's and can out lift and out ski me any day. In short, where did you find these people?

    • @DonnaMartini

+Eddie Falhaus no one who was filmed (including myself) knew what was going to happen, but I am pretty sure they asked the millennials to imitate an "old" person. The producers didn't tell them imitate a 50 year old. I believe these young people are no different than older people in that if someone asked me what young was, I would be saying 40! lol...it is about perception. So old to them was 50 and up. Young to me is anything younger than I am. These millennials didn't seem to create any other category in their mind. They just clumped all those ages together. hope that helped you understand.

I can do push-ups, lift heavy weights more than a lot of Millennials and Zoomers I know (no thanks to their more sedentary lifestyle). If there is a time machine, honestly I wouldn't go back to the time when I was a teenager or in my 20s. I like the way I am right now and wouldn't change a thing. I don't understand why we think of being old as negative. If anything being old equates to more wisdom which young people are sorely lacking at due to their inexperience. The reality is all of us are getting old and we must embrace this fact instead of negatively dwelling our ages. We need to stop glorifying youthfulness. Theres really nothing good or special about being young.

I was told early 30's, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 45, 46, 48, 50, 55, and finally the oldest was omg 60 lol ! I suppose I look to be in my mid 40's, by all the guessing and averaging it all out. Which is pretty good, and 20 years younger than I really am. I guess people see others in a different perspective, because that's about a 30 year age gap !. I feel great, and I'm more active now then when I was in my 20's !! When I look into the mirror, I see a young middle aged person, and I'm proud of who I am, and how well I've taken care of myself. And I guess that's all that matters! Ageism is discrimination, and flat out wrong! Age is really only a number, and we can look, and feel great at any age. So just take good care of yourself.

Oh, man, here we go again with the age thing. At first I cringed at this video, then I liked it, then I thought, well, this still doesn't really change the negative misperception of "old", it just changes the perception of how old "old" is; and that perception is based on physical ability--at least all of the examples in the video are about defying age in terms of physical ability. There are many people, including myself, whose physical abilities are hampered by disease or other chronic illness, so we might not have the physical stamina of someone 10 or 15 years older than us. And, there are plenty of people who can't do pushups or jumping jacks or dance like Donald O'Connor, or run the NY marathon at age 25. Why do we even have to characterize "old" in terms of ability or non-ability to engage in physical endeavors? Each of us at any age has special gifts that no one else of any age has. We will truly evolve as human beings when we can reach a point of being who we are and doing what we do without having to put it in the context of "age".

Someone's comment made me realize what it is that really bugs me about this video. On the one hand, I think it's great to show that age doesn't necessarily limit people on what they can do physically. But there are a slew of us in our 50s and older (and younger, too) who deal with chronic illnesses and/or disability that precludes us being able to dance or do martial arts, or maybe even just walk around the block. Still, we are not "old" in the sense most people think of. We still have sharp minds, we can still have a rich inner life, we can still engage with and enjoy friends, be creative, continue to grow in so many ways, ways that do not require physical prowess or strength. It's the GROWTH that matters. As long as we keep growing inwardly, we are still "young". (Not that we need to define it with that term.) We are still VITAL. I think that's the best word for it. You don't get "old" in the negative sense until you lose your ability to choose life.

In my 72 years, I have learned two things about what it means to be "old." One is that it is a state of mind, not a number of years. Some people are "old" at 35 because they feel and act old. The other is that it is a matter of perspective. And what it boils down to for me is that "old" is someone who is older than me.

My Great Grandma was 96 years old when she died. She grew up in a farm and in the rice fields. One day, she over heard me talking about work OHS, back strains and looking after one's back in the workforce. She laughed hysterically, and told me that my generation was weak. And that a good days work in the rice field would solve any back issues.
She never set foot in a nursing home. She showers herself without any help. She walks with no walking aid. She went to sleep peacefully and just never woke up.

Thank you for that beautiful story. My mother in law was 93 and still cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning her house some, and driving. Her knees were bothering her, so we got her a stationary bike and she used it daily, and strengthened her knees. Her bed was on the third floor of her home, so she climbed those stairs every day. Her car was in the basement, so she walked down. Her garage door was manual, so she lifted it when she wanted to go somewhere. She hiked and gardened. She also showered herself. She took care of her autistic son and picked him up from a busy city center on Fridays when the wait for his bus was longer, since he got off early that day. She got an iPhone and learned to FaceTime. When she fell ill, she lived only two weeks in a nursing home. Most of what killed her was the forced inactivity. ❤️

I kept this link on my desktop and just watched it now. And WOW... boy does this need to be said. I'm turning 70 this year and I have to say, I get SUCH a big kick out of telling people to guess my age, then watching their eyes bulge when I tell them my real age. It tickles me, but it also makes me feel like a bit of an "Ambassador" for my age group to let younger people know that although old can sometimes feel the same as "infirm," in a lot of cases, it's more of an "adaptation" with some pretty strong payback in terms of how much more experience we gain, say, having lived through the tumultuous times of the late 1960s and early 1970s. It gives us a wisdom to balance issues like "how bad is bad today?". And at the same time, I feel for my younger friends too because I was pretty dismissive of "older square people" in my day. Cheers to AARP for putting this out. I love it. I love younger people... they are our future.

When I was 16 I called my sister old when she turned 20 as a joke, but at the time, it also felt incredibly old to me. Four years seems like a decade when you're sixteen, and now, three years later, twenty years could pass by in a second and I wouldn't notice. I still don't want to be 20 because then I won't be a teenager anymore, and in my 19 year old head, 20 is old to me. But old doesn't mean not able to do the things you could when you were younger, is just means not a child. What these people assumed was old was what I call deterioration, which comes with age but only if you don't look after yourself.

Really enjoyed this video! I'm glad that misconceptions about aging and "being old" are being dispelled. Just because one is over a certain age chronologically, it doesn't mean that life has stopped and that one can't live a rich, fulfiiling life. The people shown in this video are proof of that and there are many more like them. And even for those who do have some degree of age related limitations, it is still possible to live a fulfilling and rewarding life.

I like this video, I like how people of different ages connect, it's beautiful. I don't like how the word old is portrayed as a bad thing. I would imagine when some uses the word old to describe an object then that's means it outdated and needs to be replaced. But I think when it comes to people old means your gown up, hair color changes, body changes, it what happens. I can be be old because I'm no longer young. It's worse for me when you can't use a word to describe someone age, it's more of an insult to me. "This person is young while this other person, is not as young as they used to be." Hearing something like that feels like in insult, it still says "old" but in a socially conditioned respectful way, which really is just condescending to me. Over wording it and beating around the bush feels bad to me. I'm writing this because of old can't be used to describe a person then there needs to be new word. I can be young, I can be middle aged, I can be old, I can be really old.

Right on target! To me, the term "old" seems to imply "obsolete" and "no longer useful," as if we were machines that need to be discarded after a certain length of time! For this reason, I think that the term "old" can be rightly applied to machines and inanimate objects, but that it is not particularly suitable to describe people. We are not "throwaways" to be disregarded and discarded... HELLO? Generally speaking, Western society's concept of seniors/older people is pretty dysfunctional and could really use a good overhaul to bring it more in line with reality and basic human dignity. Some of the concepts we're fed about older people are pretty bizarre and condescending!
