I use this all the time! It’s one of my favourite ways to use watercolour!
My favourite pencils for this are the Faber-Castell 9000. Particularly the 2b and 4b. As well as Staedtler 6 price mars lumograph blackest.
The Faber-Castel ‘dust free’ eraser erases everything even the hard to erase black and all coloured pencils. I mean all!
So also try coloured pencil and wash too!
The supplies I reccomend Above are amazing with this technique! And yes I do advise also doing pencil crayon (coloured pencil) and wash too!
I also use this in cheaper sketchbook paper including papers not intended for watercolour.
I also recommend getting some cheap dollar store make up brushes! Use make up brushes with painting (all types). Softer makeup brushes are ideal with this particular technique as they are excellent for soft washes and can do things you will love!
Using a black coloured pencil for dark black can also be excellent here too!
Some advanced things I do for this kind of mixed media is water-soluble pencils with the boldest being the Stabilo All. Use touches sparingly on top of the pencil/coloured pencil sketch and when you pull the wash in top remember and plan for how the water soluble pencil will reactivate and pull to make vibrant blended in shadows or areas of strong focal colours!
I need to make my own CZcams video about my techniques with this sort of thing soon myself.
I hope my tips here help people!
Have fun everyone, fun video thanks.

I've been doing this for a great many years - 1997 - since I started suffering from periods of exhaustion, down to Asperger's and PTSD from being a longterm carer. It's the sole way that I work at the moment, especially since an essential tremor started taking hold as well. My brain still insists on making imagery. I've been drawing for most of my life, I don't actually even remember starting and image making is so integral to my personality that i'll probably keep doing it until, suddenly I hope, I switch off. I seem, over the years, to have set up camp somewhere between Moebius, John Tunnard, Kandinsky and Varo. What turns up depends entirely on the day.

@@LITTLEsquirrelz A good friend of mine, also an artist, also has a tremor. His is from Parkinsons. He can actually steady his hand down enough to work on an Ipad. He cannot mix paint, as he used to, which he finds frustrating, but he does manage abstract very well on the pad. I am trying some supplements which were recommended on Earth Clinic. I had to stop for a while, but now I'm back on them. Keeping fingers crossed - just my little joke! - that improvements will happen. The supplements were recommended by an operating theatre nurse, so here's hoping sustained treatment will be of advantage! My friend's name is Paul Dufficey and he worked on films for a number of years. He's a good lad and you'd probably find some of his goings on online somewhere! Take care.

I very recently received an ugly result from a biopsy and have chosen to lose myself in your beautiful world of color, creativity, positivity, passion for all things watercolor, and completely fresh perspective. I’ve been a pretty successful artist for several years now, but this diagnosis has shaken me to my core. After watching about two dozen of your wonderfully inspired videos, all I can think about is painting and adding all I’ve picked up from you to my own watercolor style. Saying “Thanks” just doesn’t seem enough, but from the bottom of my heart I say, “Thank you!!!” I can hardly wait to get home (my precious hubby took me on a trip to try and help me find some perspective and has been 100% supportive of me losing myself in your world) to my drawing pad and put all I’ve picked up from your videos to practice in my art. Blessings to you for so freely sharing you! X❤X

I guess I felt a safety in this nearly anonymous way, but if receiving lovely and supportive responses like yours is what I have to look forward to, everything is going to be alright. I am told that pain is in my future and I’ve never been one to take meds. I hate the “dulling” feel you get. I love life and feeling present. Having experienced much loss in my life, I get what a gift life is. LJ, I, too, am so sorry to hear of your health issues and that you deal with pain on what seems an all too regular basis. Painting has always been so cathartic and the optimist in me is excited to see this diagnosis will inspire and bring out in my art. One CZcamsr I watched said that the pencil would dull the watercolours. I don’t find that, and your lovely painting here shows that the opposite is the case. Even though you respond to all comments, it can get to a point where it is too overwhelming to do so, and another self-imposed pressure. My question is - does the graphite smear with the addition of the watercolor, thus muddying the result? When I paint over soft graphite, it does that. Perhaps I am using too much water and agitation.

I know, you made a paper comparison recently. and in it there was one canson paper. the xl one. but I tried canson montval recently. per paper maybe a bit more expensive, but still far cheaper than the 100% cotton ones. I was blown away on how long one can work with this paper wet. of course arches 100% is still something different. but when I think back at my beginnings 2 years ago (and I still consider myself a beginner), I couldn't make full use of the great properties of arches anyway. I wasn't that elaborate to go in with a tissue and scrap a whole section of a paper just like that. but for anything else, washes, seascapes, skyies all sorts of wet in to wet esp. for small flowers etc, the canson montval is great. I got it, because someone in europe recommended it and I had it in my store. at that point I was tyired of the cheap paer. but because I saw her effortless painting process, that a lot looked like on cotton paper, I gave it a try. I am only sad, I hadn't heard about this one 2 years ago 😊

Wow nice work, I feel like I should at least try this, I only ever use a single color and a chip brush and then try to draw over it with sharpie... I see why you have so may subscribers!

Thank you for sharing! I have some of your colouring books and I love your style and your relaxed approach!
However, I feel a little uneasy about how the graphite taints the watercolour. Maybe the same technique with watersoluable (coloured) pencils would remove that issue.
I for my part love line and wash and would use this technique with waterproof ink. And would accept mistakes as "happy little accidents".

Hello Kristy, have you tried Rosa Gallery watercolors? It’s Ukrainian brand, I am beginning with watercolors and I was so lucky to find your channel 🙏🏻😍 I have two palettes from them and one from Van Gogh, and would love to hear your thoughts on it. Watching your videos gives me confidence that it’s not always about making a master peace but also about joy, having a good time and playing with colors 🌸 Love what you do, how you paint and deliver information, found you like a week ago and now huge fan

Hey random question. I've been watching this other artist called ERUDA art and they use a watercolor brand called Mijello Mission Gold Watercolor. I've been stalking Jerry's Artarama for weeks and it's just constantly sold out. Have you tried this brand of paint yet? If so. Do ya love it? By the way your Holbein obsession convinced me to invest in the Holbein Artists' Watercolor 5ml Set of 60. Hello paint, goodbye $300 lol I'm eagerly waiting on that to arrive.

May I ask what pen you use for outlining in the first blurp...?
I've always loved watercolor but I have zero art lessons or anything. I have dived deep into acrylic and mixed Media abstracts the past ten years, but it's time to learn what I really love. Your video is incredibly clear, informative and beautiful. ..you're obviously incredibly talented, not just with your artform but with your soothing vocal techniques and videography. 💕
I love that you chose florals those are my fave...
Do your ember what inspired you to take up water color--- what has drawn me in, (and hopefully I'll start) ...is Peter Rabbit, the original story books. Oh so pretty.
    Thanks for that chat. 🌞

Love this technique - but I am not really into flowers - I am more into animals, birds, fish etc... Would this technique work the same for those subjects as well? And I am wondering about the pencil smearing with the addition of the watercolour over top? Thank you for the great tips.

This is essentially grisaille method with color glazed over it. It can be very useful for deepening values. But be careful that you're using regular (i.e NOT water soluble) graphite. If your pencils are water soluble graphite, your lines and colors will get very muddy, very quickly. Water soluble graphite can produce some lovely effects, but I wouldn't use it for the kind of work in the video.
