Everybody needs to block the bad thoughts sometimes! One more reason from this amazing teacher to give yourself permission to make art! This is also a perfect example of why we should never feel guilty about using paper. We derive so much good from the process itself, in a way the finished art is just a bonus!
😘😘😘
I first started arting with an art journal and incorporated watercolors. I do more of a therapy/art journal. I have PTSD and painting lets me forget and go to a completely different "place." The first "painting" I did in my journal was of water and a sunset and I wrote on it, "When I paint, I can breathe."
Amen and hallelujah xo
“When I paint, I can breathe”I love that and it’s so true through!! I’ve been a complete mess the past few weeks over some pretty traumatic stuff going on with several things happening, one right after the next. It’s hit me hard and as much as painting has been the only thing that has saved me, it’s only been after I force myself to get out my supplies to use them. Each time, make so many excuses not to set up my stuff even after every time it is the only thing that makes me feel better. Then once I’m in that flow, I don’t want to stop. Before I know it, I’ve been painting for hours and wonder where the time went. When they say “art heals” they’re absolutely right. When I sat down today, I painted for 5 hrs straight!! Looking back, not once did I think of all the crap going on! The longer I sat there the better I felt! After I cleaned up, I felt like I had far more energy and was in a far better mood than I have been in in weeks!! I feel like it’s the only thing saving me now because before, I was in a pretty dark place. I feel like as much as I have to look forward to in life and should feel like I have better things in my life that I have to look forward to, this is the only thing that’s doing it for me right now. And in doing so, it’s making want to get back to myself more and more. I still have my moments, but that’s when I feel like I just have to push myself to just paint more instead of making excuses not to.

It's like an extension of my mixed media backgrounds in your book
I am a mental health professional and you are completely right about art and being in
The zone. I love your work and
Learn so much from you…thank you for that 😊
Thanks so much for watching!!
👈taper here! I do it because I love the nice clean look it gives! And as weird as it sounds, I see watercolors as a much cleaner kind of paint so for me, they just go together!
I’m wondering if WATCHING creative things like this has the same effects as doing them. Every time I watch stuff like this, it takes my mind away from all the everyday crap I worry about just as much as actually painting does. I actually watch watercolor paint making videos while I try to fall asleep at night because it just takes my mind away! After a few batches of grinding and mulling, I’m out cold! 😂
20 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour? I slip into this state for an entire day, and it's a place of pure happiness.
So that's why I feel so relaxed and happy when I paint 🎨 😌 calm....
I think watching your tutorials do the same for my brain
I know it as the flow state we’re time just melts away
Great way to describe it. Thanks
Re: "wasting" good supplies on practice: I would dare, if I could afford. I'm a baby painter, but a rockstar knitter. I learned the wonderful way to always use the best materials you can afford, but ESPECIALLY for practice. It's a fine line, trying to give something a try without breaking the bank on stuff you'll never use, but fighting with crap tools is a FANTASTIC way to guarantee that you don't want to keep going. So yeah, you spent less, and wasted very penny while also robbing yourself of the joy.
Plus, until you know your way around the tools - not just the basics, but your own tastes, preferences, and requirements, as well as how to spot quality AND the difference between the quality & the subjective parts, and how the different tools affect different raw materials & basic techniques (of hello, topic!) - price is often the ONLY guidance you have. And yeah, there are people who were just really intuitive artists as kids & now they're fine arts grad students talking about how dollar store supplies are just as good, and just NO. No, they are not, and you aren't just not an artist for that. Sorry, pet beef.
My point is,, yeah, that $80 kolinsky brush is excessive for a beginner, and a sweater's worth of hand painted silk yarn should b saved for something special. But within the bounds of reason, get the best you can, and USE it. There will be sticker shock, but odds are that even the cheapest crap that you absolutely DO NOT WANT are going to cost many times what you thought they "should". Real supplies cost real money, but you're gonna get what you pay for (with rare but notable exception, like knitting NEEDLES, somehow??), and they're still not so much that you can't be frugal (and avoid decision paralysis) by limiting yourself to a minimal handful of entry-price basics instead of an overpriced, low quality starter kit you have no idea what to do with. Go to the specialty shop, ask one of the employees (they're always enthusiasts themselves & often pros in a real one), get the good stuff, and use it. Use it.
All of my art is practice and all of my art is on good paper. If I "practice" on good paper I'll know what to do on good paper. Also, my art is for me and enjoying the creative process. The only real expendable is paper. I can paint 100 sheets of paper for what a day at the golf course would cost. Yay!
Leaves very pretty
Agree 100% about the joy state. Anxiety just slips away. But I don't always use the expensive stuff because I simply don't have the money to do that. Bottom line. No money, no paper.
Thanks for the shoutout ❤my friend! Another video beautifully done. Can’t wait to try these exercises. They are gorgeous!
Now you see why I said I swear I wasn’t copying your latest upload lol!!
@@KristyRice haha yep! Great minds…
Thank you so much, Kristy for pointing out arttrauma brain connection! I have PTSD, anxiety and chronic pain disorder and doing art is by far the best remedy for me. I never thought of it before I watched this video!
I also appreciate you giving ideas on very doable projects. It's really helpful to break away from perfectionism.
Dear Kristy, I'm so happy I found your channel! You are a real teacher and I appreciate your lessons. Wishing you health and happiness and art ❤️
I tape my edges because I want a crisp edge that mimics a white matte board.
I'm on the hot mess express myself, girl. Just wanted to thank you for YOU. Very new to painting, so I'm new to your videos, but I love them and adore you. I have done other types of art as therapy over the years, and yes there is nothing like it. What I love about painting is it doesn't matter what it looks like, I find satisfaction in just pushing paint around. It's a bonus if it gets on my hands 🥰
When Daniel Smith still had his store one could buy parent sheets of all the quality brands. I loved that store in south Seattle. He sold it a few years back. The new owners didn’t seem that different. And then. Dec of 2022 they closed the store. I’d been going there since the 70 ies. I do miss it.
Oh wow so sad :(
I’m teaching my 4 year old granddaughter. Our number one rule is that there are no mistakes and no bad paintings. We really bond while painting and I love every minute. Best therapy ever. You make it so much easier. Thanks for all you do. This will be a perfect project to try with her.
Amazing!
I’ve decided I work hard caring for my grandsons 6 and 3, so I’m loving my Academy paper, your brushes, and my Rosa paint. I don’t get much time to me. My life seems to be time for people’s needs and wants. So I’m going to enjoy.
Wonderful! and Amen! XO
This is a lovely activity
MAM I REALLY LOVE TO WATCH THE AWESOME PAINTINGS
Thank you! Cheers!
#Boop Yay ! Loving this 😍 🙌 💖 This is a great project ! 👍 Keeping it art for joys sake 😑 🙄 always Kristy.
Always!
I use good supplies for practice because I usually have better results. My practice is essential…passion for practice.❤️love you!
I wrote my Mater's thesis on this topic, healing through art-based practice. Trying to find any information on this was very hard because it was always turning into "art therapy", based on preconceived ideas and final art work, and story agency from the creator/artist.
I already watch Tammy! I wondered why painting has been so therapeutic! My dad died almost a year ago. And it has brought up so much trauma from my childhood. Maybe that’s one of the reasons God released the burning desire to paint. To give me reprieve for my mind. 🤔 something to chew on. Since I’ve only been doing this for six months. And I always said I was not artistic.
Yay!
I enjoyed this video and the three techniques is so relaxing. Looking forward to trying them. Thanks, Christy.
Have fun!
I just got your pallette yesterday, and the brushes are due to arrive Monday. I am so looking forward to using them together.
Thank you Kristy. I really appreciate the ideas for happy, stress-reducing projects!! And you are just a fun person to spend time with. :)
Thank you so much!
As a teenager if I was upset I'd grab a sketchbook. The pictures took away the hurt 🤕. Now I paint for "Joy." It's time to move to watercolor. Thanks for being my inspiration. (I only tape if I'm making a picture) 🖼️
I love me a crisp white taped border. 😊
Maybe I need wider tape. I always feel like my thin tape is a bit lacking in the control department
@@KristyRice Kristy, I just buy 1/2-1 inch blue painter’s tape at the dollar store. Whatever size they have. Then I tape the loose paper down to my board. This way I can use a ton of water and prevent buckling while doing so. When the tape is removed, it looks like a mat border. Then the painting can just be popped into a frame. The narrow tape you have is nice, but it does not give that border effect. I think I would find it stressful trying to place it evenly. Hope that is helpful.
Omg I really needed this exercise today, so gloomy here! Thanks 🙏👍
Enjoy!
Sometimes I tape, sometimes not, it depends on the project. Love these practice exercises! Especially the leaves!
♥️🎨😎 I needed this video right now, thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for posting real drawings instead of photoshop stuff. This is how mine look! Real raw and absolutely beautiful!
You're very welcome!
I’ve only been painting for a few years (one good thing that came out of the pandemic!), and of course started with student, economical supplies. Now, though, since I can see the difference when using good paints, the right paper for the project, I only use my better quality supplies. Even when practicing color blends, strokes, whatever, because I then often turn them into backgrounds for cards, tags, etc. I buy supplies on sale, and carefully choose what to add to my growing collection.
Thanks for sharing!
Kristy, I have always used good paper. I could never see why I would use a cheap paper for practice and then expect my results to be what I’m looking for. Because I find that I paint very differently on good paper versus cheap paper. Cheap paper is a struggle. Just never made any sense to me. Your tutorial on different papers was very helpful and I was able to find and enjoy a less costly paper that has good properties (Gem Craft), which I do use for practice now. Otherwise, Arches is my preferred paper.
I see what you’re saying, but I honestly prefer cheaper paper. I’m not sure what it is, but the better quality papers just don’t work as well for me. I feel like they take too long to dry and the granulations on the paper don’t quite sit on it and flow the same way as it does on the expensive paper. Maybe that is because I started out on the cheaper stuff and that’s what I’m used to, but that’s actually how I prefer to work. The only time I get annoyed with the cheaper paper is when I’m working on a bigger piece and it dries faster than I’d like and adding too much water to compensate for that just makes it worse. But considering that I work mostly on smaller pieces, it’s not much of an issue for me.
Love this! Just watching as made me feel better already. Thank you for this tidbit
You're so welcome!
Yes I tape, but sometimes I don't. Great exercises
I try to use cotton paper all time, not always Arches as it is really expensive here.
Wonderful!
I like to use the tape because I enjoy the abstract sort of shapes it can create with very little effort. I am a recreation therapist in the mental health space …and boy can I tell you, washi tape and watercolor is one of the easiest ways to get my clients into a flow state with art. Especially if they haven’t ever tried it before!
That's great!
Loved this. I enjoy watching at night ready to do the next day.
I enjoy taping at the edge as it gives my pieces a sharp finish. I did like what you did with tape in the first one added to the art x
Glad you enjoyed it!
kristie. So love your videos. Then zen of painting is what has me hooked! As for the taped edge issue, I think its effect is more obvious on a piece that is wholly contained within those borders....like a landscape, or any work where the paint goes right up to that edge. Removing the tape makes an instant mat or frame for the work. I hope others can articulate this better than i just did. Happy Sunday!
On your first exercise I plan on putting down a double tape, so that the tape forms double white lines once removed, and paint outside those lines to the edges of the paper. I’m thinking that it would make a border within a border. Will keep you posted. Thank you for the debugging exercise.
That's a great idea!
Fabulous. Thank you :)
Oh, I'll do the plaid, no ill do the circles. No I'll oh just give in and try them all
Awesome sauce!!
yes i use my best supplies, its very humid and hot where i live and i love wet on wet but the cheaper papers dry out before ive barely started. i decided if im going to have to use my good paper then why not my yummy paints. i do cut each page though as paper is expensive here in new zealand.i love your tutorials and painting style also thankyou for sharing your talents with us
I think taping it down helps reduce buckling
Kristy thank you so much for sharing this with us. Many times I need to escape from the worries of life & want to go to my art desk & paint but don’t know how to start - specifically when I’m stressed. This video has helped & encouraged me - thank you! I’ve experienced that zone before & it’s so therapeutic- as far as paper? We all love the good stuff - but u will laugh - sometimes I don’t think my art deserves the good paper!! Lol. I’ll work on that 😊. Sorry this is so long
Yes ill be doing this. Youre amazing
I always use the best I can afford. If I "learn" on the cheap, the whole experience is just different, and then I have to learn how the better stuff interacts and moves, absorbs, spreads, etc.
I received your paint palette today. Yaaa. Can't wait to try it out. This will be a good exercise to try. Thanks
Hope you like it!
Since watching your videos, I DO use my best paper for practises… the watercolours react differently on cheaper paper so practising on those will not help me to learn what I can do with my colours, especially my super-granulating ones. My cheaper paper isn’t wasted though. I make cards so it’s used for stamping on and heat embossing, then I’m ‘colouring in ‘ with my paints so the quality of paper isn’t so important ❤️
Thank you for another great video… off to have a look at the links …
I love this I am going to try it as I am feeling down. I nearly always tape, love the border. The cheap decorators tape is best. You always help me not to take art too seriously. Many thanks
Oh I will try that?!
It’s so satisfying 🥰
Kristy, I’m having a watercolor date with a friend…..and we are gonna do this video as a nice warmup!
Ooohmgosh! So honored!!
Hi Kristy I tape because i don't like super wavy paper HaHa.....😂
Painting is healing. Good Medicine. I tape sometimes. When I do, it's because those crisp straight line look so contrasty against the relative chaos of my natural flowy, curvy, impressionistic style.
OMGosh. Yes. This is what I've *DESPERATELY* been in need of... THANK YOU!
You are welcome!!!
So happy I found you. I’ve been struggling 😂😂😂❤
I’m thrilled you’re here :)
@@KristyRice 😍
I tape if I’m using loose paper, to keep it from curling or wrinkling. Blocks, I don’t tape. I’ve also quit using cheap paper, I now use 100% cotton for all watercolor, but wouldn’t use Arche’s for practice.
I only tape the edges for paintings that would hang on the wall. The rest of them can be loose sheets or in a sketchbook. 😊🎨🖌
Everything you said makes perfect sense! Thanks for all you do. Recently purchased your brush set and I love them❤ also as I was watching I said to myself you’re totally doing this using your Arches paper, so yes I feel so good using my good paper and it always looks better so why not practice on it.
Awesome! Thank you! And exactly yes on the paper front!!
It’s a wonderful trip into discovery and joy! I really don’t like following direction in creating! Thanks you always refresh my thought process!❤️Karen Durmish
You are so welcome!
I have been using only 100% cotton paper ever since your video with Kolbie. And I love it!
I'm so glad!
Thanks for the exercises! Sometimes I tape, sometimes I don't. I tape if I want that clean border or if I want the paper to stay flat while painting wet on wet as I'm not a fan of blocks.
Circles may not be my thing. Leaves I could get into...
God bless ❤
I always tape so I'll have a 1/4" to 1/2" white border in the end. (Sometimes I'll paint the border another color) Don't remember why I started. Maybe something related to framing a finished project? But anyway, it's what I do now. LOL
Ah framing yes makes sense!
I’m going to do this right now!
Go go!!!
I'm pretty much a complete newbie with watercolour painting (and putting art on paper in general), I also live in the more depressing island of New Zealand (and before anyone reminds me that I definitely probably should just bought the supplies from a amazon or a similar store, Buying anything from amazon even if it was just a simple pen would cost me easily $200 for shipping alone. Amazon just doesn't want to offer their products to people like me who live in the countries that I do) So after binge watching artists like yourself for months on end but clearly not paying any attention to all of the videos that so easily lay out all that you need as a beginner. I finally decided F*ck it I'm going to treat myself and go & buy the "basics" of what I thought I needed. So I went to the art store they had exactly zero ready to go pans of colour, heck they didn't even have pans that you could fill yourself; So I did what I do best I got flustered and stupidly bought 7 different brands of tube sets, 2 full sets of brushes, plus an array of different branded (very expensive) single brushes. I then found my way to the paper section they had a whopping variety of only 2 different brands of watercolour paper, so that gave me a choice of either getting the $160 pad of paper or the $300 pad of paper (I bought the cheaper one, which wasn't even cheap)
So since all my "projects" are really just the most basic beginners things that you could possibly imagine, I don't really have a choice but to use my really good quality but definitely overpriced paper and paints and brushes. I do get a laugh out of the fact that my paints are currently being held in those plastic 🎨 kids pallets. I am hoping that i can find some pans and a tin that won't cost me an arm a leg, but so far I have not found any in every store that I've looked. So to answer your question yes I do use my fancy paper since that's all I've got to 🙃
And, yes, time passes and I realize I haven't thought of stressors while I've been painting. It must be a thing.
Indeed a thing ❤️
Hello Kristy. Princeton has come out with a new brush called the velvet touch petals. its intriguing. i'm hoping you will do a tutorial on how to use this very unique brush.
I'll check it out!
Loved this video! I’m definitely trying it! Not sure about the tape, though!
Mix the tape lol
I tape off my paper for 2 reasons
1 piece looks great with the resulting white border
2 it's supposed to help with reducing the amount of buckling when paper is very wet
When I'm painting, or doing anything creative, I find that I don't think about my struggles or the chaos in the world! After watching you paint with your palette for so long, I finally took the plunge and I just ordered it! Now I can't wait to get it! 🥳Do you mix the yellow with your red or pink, to make a peach or orange? I'm very intrigued about how using the neon will look with other colors. When you use it with your blue it is stunning! I use my Academy paper for practicing, but I do not use my Arches. I think I've only used my Arches twice since I've been painting. 🤔🤦♀️
Oh my heavens I’m grateful you’re going to try it. Can’t wait to hear what you think!!
I don't tape down my paper. I always watch for learning, and they say to now tape it down. I can't afford to use that paper at all. I have the good old canson paper and store brand watercolors. put your newest colors on my wish list :-)
Use what you have. It’s all good.
Ok loving the abstract feel of the these pieces. Looks like woven linen. I leave the paper on the pad and use clips. I do have masking fluid haven't tried it yet
Yes This is why I love blocks!
@@KristyRice I am going to give this a go. The ideas are flying around my head.
I like to tape to stabilise the paper and to have a certain about a border. And also to have the possibility of use lots of water eventually. But I also like to use the tape to interact with the painting! You can accomplish some true effects!
Thanks for sharing!!
I love your leaves. Do I need a dagger brush to make leaves so beautiful? I don't currently have one.
You don't but I've found that daggers make leaves more effortless in less strokes :)
Do you know when your paints will be in stock, just love those colours xx
Are you in the US? They are in stock currently but not Prime until all of the restock inventory makes it to enough Amazon warehouses. So you can order now but arrival will take a smidge longer than normal :) Hope that makes sense!
No I’m in the uk, If I click on your supplies info on your video it comes up as currently unavailable on Amazon USA I so so want that set 😩😂 I cannot find them at all on our Amazon
Tell me about it! I use art as a therapeutic aid!
The best!
Love you....desde mexico
Thanks for watching!! XO
I took a watercolor class many many years ago. She had us prep the paper by spraying it with something ( I can’t remember if it was a sealer or what) and she used rubber cement stuff to keep the paint from bleeding into the areas next to whatever we were painting. Do you do that ever?
Hmm I'm thinking the rubber cement stuff was likely masking fluid but the primer I'm not sure. I don't use either!
You are on point about forgetting everything around you when you're arting! It's my happy place and a great escape for sure.
I do use tape on almost everything. Even measure to get the edges the same. 😂 Personal preference on the clean edge it gives after it pulled.
Yes! Thank you!
Boop!
Wahoo thanks!
I have 3 small arches pads. I’m so scared of using them. 😬
Use one sheet today. Rip off the bandaid
There might be something wrong with me. Halfway through, I'm board. ???
It’s okay! Try watching another day :)
What brand is the large dagger brush you use in this video?
It’s my own brand, Paintcrush :) Part of a set launching on Amazon later this month!
@@KristyRice yeahhhh ! I have your paint pallet & your brushes & some of your books. So I will be on the lookout 👀 for these new brushes. 🎨 🖌️
Can’t find Tammy’s link.
It’s in the description:)
No, no taping. Having fun painting and taping seems like it's serious. Lol.
