Matt love your videos and your channel. Got many cool tips greatly appreciated!!
I must call a foul, on your video here.
Mineral spirits contain oil. Best to use acetone or even brake cleaner.
Rotate that paper towel until there is no more black coming off the steel. Prep is everything for a good bond.
Thanks again BleepinJeep!!!
Acetone not mineral spirits. Mineral spirits contain oils that can be left behind.
I was wondering about that myself
clean, sand, clean, prime. don't smash or smear oils into the sanded surface.
Just my 2 cents. You should start painting the edges first. Because all the overspray you create from covering the edges you will cover after you paint the main portion
Thank you for the video! Painting my tow hooks and wanted some advice. Everything I wanted to know you covered, thanks!
You can also use those halogen work lights to bake the paint on when you're done. And old friend of mine had an old electric oven in their shop they would use to bake small parts they painted.
Love the random sword at the end
thanks for the great video mate. What is the advantages of a clear coat afterwards, will it strengthen the paint?
You lost me at "have a clean work area."
Process is dead on but you're gonna wanna use a tougher 2k epoxy primer especially on something like an offroad bumper where it has to stand up to a lot unless you're the type to just reshoot all the time otherwise great step by step video
Great video and great comments
@BleepinJeep
Do you always use etch primer for all bare metal surfaces, even if it's old metal that was sanded down to bare metal?
Whooo, perfect timing.
Needed to paint my new bumpers for my XJ haha
Hey, brada......Zaruk Kaiga........how goes?
A very helpful video - thanks a ton!!
When painting with spraycans a common mistake is that painter keep can too far from targeted surface. Its understandable to do like that as being careful or if using "many thin layers" method. Of course if u keep distance between 15-25cm, its more difficult to avoid runs/runoffs. But that is the distance that you get smoother and better looking surface. If you double that painting distance ( or somewhere 30cm), the paint not going to settle like it meant to do. With too far distance you get "mandarin skin" and other similar issues.
Good video if your doing old school etch but totalty different process today for epoxy coatings on metal.
Nice job there mate. Just wondering did you give the primed surface a light sand before laying down your top coat at all. Cheers.
which material did you use after sand cleaning the metal ? is it mandatory all the time ? do you know any reference or standards to paint ferous metals ?
Hey Matt thank you for the feedback from yesterday I have red dust all over the undercarriage of my a Cherokee do you think that might be affecting my fuel filter
perfect job. thanks
I kept waiting for you to grab a real gun and git her done. 2 pack clear is the best way to seal I reckon. Never found anything better. Unless it's a 2 part, it takes forever to dry hard. But, for the casual guy who likes rolling ball bearings in a can, nice vid.
Thanks very much..very helpful!!👍😉
Was I the only one worried that the sword will hit the freshly painted metal?
Nice tutorial. Mineral spirits contain petroleum distillates which will remain on the surface and prevent good adhesion. You are better off using a wax and grease remover to wipe down before paint. Otherwise, great video!
Nice man. Yeah I need to add some paint to mine, 3 others in the area look the same. Need to be different!! ha
Would it work to paint it with line-x?
I knew bleeping jeep would have what I was looking for
hi there i wanted to know that how do i spray paint chrome over my sanded bmx sprocket. Answer would be appreciated.
*Can I paint ‘Mild’ Steel with this method and the paint you used? Is it safe and correct?*
Actually I have to paint Mild Steel table (with 4 legs and flat surface) of half ton made up of angle mild steel bars welded with each other.
I want the paint to last for about 5 years or more without scratches and all. Moreover *I also want to protect my Mild Steel table from rusting.*
I'd like to see a 4x4 with all the bar work just left bare with a clear coat, raw metal looks cool
How long do you think this method will not catch any rust ?
Thanks! 👍🏽
is that the sword of Damocles?
Was there mill scale on this bumper and if so did the sanding block and mineral spirits take it off?
I see that you hung the part by wire which makes it easier. What do you about the areas where the part is touching the wire. When you finish and take the part down you will have tiny areas of unpainted bare metal where the part was resting on the wire. What is the best way to avoid this short of letting your coats dry and repainting the area where the wire was.
The only way is to suspend it where the sun don't shine --- I mean where the paint don't need to be. Otherwise you have to fix-it-up afterward or perhaps suspend from a suitable location that is less visible.
What would be good for a Raw steel bumper ? Just want the steel look only
How about cleaning and painting the inside of rectangular tube?
is it worth taking a file and rounding over the sharp edges?
How many cans of primer and how many cans of paint did it take?
Sweet sword man!
Rattle can paint ? Mineral spirits for cleaning? If you're going to do this at least use the right cleaning chemicals and then appliance epoxy. Regular spray paint is too soft and the finish is mediocre. Appliance epoxy is much tougher and the finish is far better. And to improve your spray can control buy a $2 handle adaptor. An HPLV will make your paint job 100x better ... hard to believe you fab this bumper and spray it with a can... If I bought it I would be bummed when it started rusting in a few months.
don't you wet sand the primer before you paint?
Do you ever try and bake the paint on?
So you don't put a clear coat after?
did not spray red oxide before primer ?? why is it so?
Nice video man. Probably a stupid question, but what is the easiest way to paint around the wire that the bumper is hanging by at the shackle tabs?
bleepinjeep Thanks for the info.
Does the color of the primer matter much?
Could i use a wire brush? Or just stick with sandpaper
What about a metal conversion coat?
Hi, I know this video is a year old but I have a quick question. I have a bumper that came black (came on my jeep when I bought it). How should I approach this if I want to repaint it? Should I sand down to bare metal? Or just paint over it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Scuff the old paint with sandpaper and then repaint
1:25 THE RESPIRATOR JUST FUCKING DISAPPEARED!!! LOL
Is acetone okay to use to clean it up or does mineral spirits better
Either one
I have had no luck with spray paint holding up. Seems like it scratches too easy. Im looking for somethings that better, nkt the stuff with staibless steel dust that like 600 dollars a gallon lol
Excellent, please hit this like button and help get this video out there for know nothing people like myself who do our own projects. Thanks so much.
i woulda hung it so it was verical. In our shop we used zep brake cleaner in bulk to clean it . Paint thinner good too .... maybe cheaper.
what brand of mineral oil did u use ??? please show the brands you use
PBS #007 - no mineral oil, use mineral spirits , that is used to clean off any oil on metal so primer will bond.
It's not necessary to spray a clear coat afterwards?
only if you're gay
I was wondering what brand of paint did you use?
I use rustoleum
Aerosol only put the thinnest coat of paint , the can is mostly propellant!
paint 3 time?
check out my sword faceass lol. nice tutorial bro.
Matt, you're already loopy. You need not warn us anymore 😂
I take it the sword mounts to the front of the bumper
You should make a video on how to drop a transfer case
wouldn't it break if you dropped it?
l337pwnage awesome
remove linkage and the 5 bolts and it will come with the xmember. it's easy
The swinging sword lol
Great video man! Thanks... I think I just got a new idea for a business and a way to make money for myself.
what is SELF Etching primer? how is it different from regular primer?
Vic L. -Self-etching primer , if I remember correctly, seems to etch, or penetrate into the metal, making a stronger bond. What I don't know is: must we sand it before painting or spray paint over it before it dries out completely. Anybody help. thanks.
Lol...are you aware that there is a swinging sword in your video?
Am i the only one that understood the sword joke?
what was the sword about?
Practices here are not ideal. Maybe for a low cheap garage shop.
orange peel for days
Go to 4:28 to get the real info.
You don't send self etching I'm still a student on learning
I'm about ready to cry lol. I spent hours sanding my axle down to bare metal in every little crevice. Degreaser it then put two coats of rustoleum primer then let dry overnight. Woke up and went to start painting and noticed a scratch. Then took my fingernail and tried to scratch it and it peeled down to metal...I don't know why but I'm pissed
BenDover did you figure out how to fix it?
rxz4140 sorta, I went ahead and just put it in and after about another week(3 weeks total since last coat) it was finally dry. Putting it in tore the paint up a lot but I'm gonna sand and repaint those parts. I believe the humidity was preventing it from curing
@@Ben-lo7cy normally down to trapping the solvent between layers either because they weren't left long enough to dry between coats or were too thick. From my experience, the coats were too thick and paint takes weeks to dry properly even when using almost transparent layers and sanding back. I've painted with loads of different spray paints and found this issue with all of them. In the end the last project it had months to dry and that is as solid as a rock.
Wipe in one direction. Not back and forward like that.
starts at .48 ffs
Video could've started at 4:00 and the paint parts sped up so entire video could have been 2 minutes ;p
+Liovi Good clear video tho
THANK YOU.
If someone is going to spend alot of money on a bumper then someone should not paint it like that, Learn how to paint it correctly if you are going to do a video. This is not the way the bumper should be prepped or primed or painted if you want it to last. This is such a do it your self crappy way to paint.
ohh ya!
@@bleepinjeep if you dont have a paint booth and you cant use a paint gun with the correct products it will not last but you cant use 2k primer in a can and 2k paint in a can you can get these products from an auto paint store and at least the job will last longer, stop using the crap that you are using, take the advice of a painter that has 43 years experience. try it my way and you will like it much better. then do another video. metal prep, etch prime, 2k prime, sand, wipe and tac off, then 2k paint. its a much better way and it will last.
Hey Matt thank you for the feedback from yesterday I have red dust all over the undercarriage of my a Cherokee do you think that might be affecting my fuel filter
