My car is the mustang in this movie. It was parked on El Camino Real in San Clemente outside my ceramic studio when a nice production manager Ilya offered me 200 bucks to borrow it for a couple days in 2003. Conversation, cash, and a handshake and smile was how we did things in those days. What a great movie! Stoked my car had such a starring role lol. It was a smelly, loud, broken down beast on the inside, but a looker on the outside. My 15 year old son is now a sophomore at San Clemente High School, where this is all filmed. What a great movie. And how fun my hot mess of a ride at the time is here for me to revisit. And yes of course what an incredible film. Good job Rian Johnson. San Clemente isn't just surfing!
I don't. Sold it shortly thereafter for $3500. Broke down all the time. fun while it lasted.

i didn't think it was possible for me to adore this film more than i already always have since first watching it... then i read this comment
Thank you!!!!@@rekall76
I adore brick and every couple of months I just look up "brick- video essay". I love seeing new ones from smaller channels, great video. I guess small self-plug I recently made a short film heavily inspired by brick. Just a smaller scale :)
Every few months, I search "Brick Movie React" in the hopes that I will one day get lucky.
@@criticalfallacy yk I committed this a year ago. I infact still look up brick video essay all the time. I love this film. You should aslo still go check out my shorts. Their no brick but they cool
I do this too!!! Always thought it was such an amazing modern noir. I love seeing other people get excited about it.
i'm so happy we're on the same page
BRICK is hands down top 5 of my favorite films ever made. The dialogue is pure brilliant. I love every aspect of this film.
What’s your top five?
Seeing Brick in college rocked my world. The sense of dramatic gravitas packed into something that felt so close, hard to compare.
I hope no one has said this yet, but JGL plays the detective on the TV show Marta's Sister is watching in the first scene in Knives Out. Its a VO role
Funny story because I had someone Dm about this, but the day I edited this video I watched Knives Out and heard it there but I couldn't cut it out of the script by then so here we are...
@@MGraweyFilms Hopefully he'll be easier to find in the sequel lol
@@MGraweyFilms I was looking for a JGL cameo when I watched Knives Out and thought, "Huh. Too bad he wasn't in it." And then my brother told me he was the voice in the TV show, and when I rewatched it with that knowledge I was like, "How the fuck did I miss that???" So, don't worry. You're not the only one who missed it the first go around.
@@TheCommandoSnail this was a year ago but its funny that it was probably even less noticeable in glass onion lol
“We have the nanny cam footage!”
(Do you want me to tell you his voice cameo in Glass Onion?)
I am incredibly glad someone else knows about this film. I love it, and I think it's a masterpiece. One of the perfect noir films.
I saw this movie for the first time in the spring of 2006 on a British Airways flight from Chicago O’Hare to London Heathrow. I was a 16 year old Dallas suburbanite and highly impressionable. This movie quickly became a favorite that I shared often and even obsessed over at times. This movie made feeling alone and investigative in this world less geeky and more heroic. Definitely gave me a sense of purpose and identity. I will always cherish this movie.
It's so amazing this is the start of a Hollywood writer/ director success story of the most genuine, hard working classic ideal, and now people hate Rian because of Star Wars. what a nightmare for the guy.
he deserves the hate, totally disrespectful of the franchise.
@@user-kb8kg1dp7l Who cares, lol
The guy made his own deteticve franchsie which he made hundreds of millions with, was nominated for several oscars and made his own TV show. I think Rian Johnson is doing really well, who cares if some nerds on the itnernet are angry.
I remember thinking when I went to re-watch Brick that Brendan had a similar vibe and look (the hair) to Spike from Cowboy Bebop. So cool to hear that it was an influence as this film is a gem and Cowboy Bebop is my favourite anime.
Great video! Just watched this movie for the first time since my 10th grade theater class, 5 years ago, and I forgot how much fun it is to experience. It really feels like an anti-blockbuster, which I think we need more of rn. Best of luck in your future film career!
Loved this video! Brick is my 3rd favorite film of all time and I was overjoyed to see someone understand why it’s such an endearing work of art for me. It’s incredibly unique and creative in all aspects of its filmmaking, and has inspired some of my upcoming projects. Also, thank you for shouting out Assassin, it’s truly an honor !
may i ask what are the other 2??
@@lolep7871 Well my top 3 has moved around a lot since then, but Interstellar is my for sure number 1, and Brick, Drive, La La Land, Incendies & The Secret In Their Eyes fight for the rest of my top spots. I also have Gone Girl, Super Dark Times, Coherence, LOTR ROTK & Your Name as some other films I’d consider 5 star movies from my personal taste.
It is well made in every aspect of filmmaking.
I’m a year late but your taking inspiration from Brick has now inspired me right back. Best of luck with your filmmaking. (And Joe was the voice of one of the cops on the tv show playing on the ipad in Marta’s kitchen) 😎
one of my favorite films and filmmakers. I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of your work as well, M Grawey
one day you’re gonna be a huge inspiration to others too, you’re already one for me ❤️
One of my favorite movies from one of my favorite filmmakers
And a new favorite video essay that perfectly captures the inspiration I felt after seeing Brick for the first time.
Just saw Brick. Loved the movie and I love this video. You deserve more subscribers and I wish the best to all the aspiring filmmakers in this video.
I just watched it for the first time last night. The whole time I kept thinking of Miller’s Crossing, but that line at the end, “It was you, angel,” made me sure of it.
This video was absolutely phenomenal, thank you for being so goddamn passionate about this truly incredible film.♥️
I love your channel after only watching this video
This was touching and poignant, dude. New sub!
6:48 Joseph Gordon Levitt can be heard on a TV or radio in Marta's house early in Knives Out. "WE HAVE THE NANNY CAM FOOTAGE"
JGL is I believe the gritty detective voice in the show that marta's sister is watching, so not on screen but in the film for sure!
Cool Movie.
I am rewatching this film right now and I want to analyze it but don’t know how to start.
Heyy, did you done the analysis.. i want to do the same, if you can help me, it will be great.
Thanks in advance
I'm pretty sure JGL is just in knives out on a phone call so it's just his voice
this is absolute amazing, you never talked about its worldbuilding
The only thing you've said about Brick's worldbuilding is "I don't think this could -actually- happen"
and you're right, RJ doesn't care about worldbuilding
and neither you.
Alright, buddy go off, most of the video I talk about how he used the things around him his interests, low budget, and love for movies to craft the world of the film and make something that's one of a kind to its creator and budget, not the actual world-building of the who what when and where but the world build of Brick how it got made how its influences affected it.
anyone else see/feel parallels between rian johnson and shane carruth (primer, upstream color)?
It’s an absolute shame that Rian Johnson shit the bed with Star Wars, but this movie is exactly I still have hope for his career and future output.
What do you mean "hope for his career"? The guy is more successfull than ever.
joseph only does voice cameos in knives outs. in te first one he was te news reporter you can hear on the laptop when marta comes in and in te second one he was the dong
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a secret cameo in the beginning of the movie, look it up and you'll find it.
In case you *still* haven't found it... in Knives Out, JGL is the voice of the Detective in the TV show that Marta's sister is watching on her laptop in the kitchen.
isnt that right zach?
I love this movie.. but it will be forever TAINTED.. for me.. as a great movie by the guy that destroyed Star Wars…
