The writer is a true auteur, one of our very best - the great Joe Minion. Underline
"Artist" when ye speak to anything Joseph Minion. Takes great pride in his craft.
Has worked ENDLESSLY at it (Finding Joe's Voice).
@@josephkelley8641 I love Minions their so cute n funny
We've all been HIM. Where everything goes wrong and you're a good person and you're just wondering, "WHY GODDAMN IT! WHY?" That is this universal story, right here. After Hours, one of my absolute favorite films.
I remember that NYC. When a movie like that could be believable in a pre Iphone world when Soho wasn’t a shopping mall and NYC didn’t exist for tourists. I miss that NYC. NYC lost its soul.
Said that to myself walking down 2nd Ave last night. too docile for my liking
this movie hardly feels like a comedy lol. it seems like a psychological thriller
This is my favorite Scorsese film... I love Taxi Driver don’t get me wrong.... but I don’t like many comedies... After Hours is my kind of comedy. Great video! Thank you!! More people need to see this film, maybe in the coming years it will become a well known classic amongst Scorsese’s filmography.
Not a comedy as such. More 'black-comedy' or 'dark-comedy'.
Scorsese is the most underrated comedy director of all time.
This and Bringing Out the Dead are my two favourite lesser known Scorsese films.
It’s a perfect film to stumble on whilst flicking through the channels in the early hours after getting home drunk. Another good one is ‘motorama’.
I watched the movie because of The Weeknd. and honestly I love the movie I must re watch it...
Same man. What a great film to be recommended by such a great artist.
I've always loved this film. Just watched it again last night after not having seen it in many years. So great.
I cannot translate how madly besotted with Rosanna Arquette I have been since the day I saw this movie. ❤❤❤❤❤
I can see after hours being a Tim Burton film. It definitely has some of the themes as a Burton film. But Martin Scorsese needed to make a film like after hours. It gave him his love of filmmaking back. But it all worked out for Burton.
It's always been one of my favorites. I lived in the city for a few years back in the late 80's early 90's, and the Soho area really was like that! Some really, "odd" people living there. :)
"You know people like that hard to deal with."
" That's what friends are for."
Thanks for this careful assessment, I have never seen anyone talk about how perfectly this movie fills you with paranoia and anxiety while making you laugh. I think this is a master piece black comedy.
Sorry Tim ?!!!!!! Pee-Wees Big Adventure is pure cinematic brilliance . After Hours is good too though.
I sincerely think Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is the funniest movie I've ever seen, and it's a different experience when you watch it as an adult. Also, after hearing that "sorry, Tim," I don't need to watch the rest of this.
I loved this movie. I saw it during its original theater release. The performances are great and it still holds up.
this movie is a good double feature with eyes wide shut. id watch this last since its kind of a lighter note to end on
My father showed me this when I was like 12, I'm in the same boat you are but I have to say, seeing all those martin scorsese movies at a young age; king of comedy is my favourite
I saw this film in the cinema back when it was released and I’ve loved it ever since, I watched it again the other night, which led me to this great review. I remember thinking that Griffin Dunne was such a great actor and was surprised that he didn’t become a huge star after this, I didn’t realise he was a producer.
It’s definitely a Scorsese gem, I’d much rather this one than any of the more famous mafia gangster films that he’s known for.
The surreal soundtrack is just brilliant too.
I always held this film in high regard . I've put my friends on to this and they all loved it .total gem of a film great form start to finish i personal think it's one Scorsese best also king of comedy
Criminally underrated video about a criminally underrated movie!
Amazing video. I love these kinds of video essays. How do you not have more subs... Please keep making videos.
The producers Griffin Dunne and Amy Robinson actually brought Michael Ballhaus to Scorsese for this film. Scorcese says he was used to completing five or six set-ups a day. With Ballhaus, he managed sixteen set-ups a day. This was due not only to Ballhaus and his speed, but also to new camera lenses and faster film stocks.
love the way you write and edit these
Believe it or not, I think this is one os Scorsese's finest
agreed
Reminds me of a funny Franz Kafka novel.
For me it’s interesting to see SoHo as such a run down and deserted place. It has transformed so much since this film.
Your videos are absolutely amazing the fact you have such in depth well written and edited videos w this little recognisition is incredible
just found your channel and im obsessed to say the least
This is such a beautiful movie something about it is just so unique, amazing review dude this video deserves more recognition. You are a very good movie critic
One of my all time favorites
This is showing at a theatre where i live tomorrow - i had never heard of this. Im going to watch it on the big screen now
Congratulations for the making of this video..super good
Amazing video man, smashed tf outta the like button
Thanks for the review.
Been telling people to see this movie for decades. Good to see it being appreciated. Maybe Steve Wright, comedian, would do a review.
Wright: "Man walking down a sidewalk sees a cat fall multiple stories and land on its feet then walk over to another cat and say "See, that's how it's done." "
ha, that could be a synopsis of "After Hours".
Also, John Demme's "Something Wild" is in the same vein as "After Hours", a NYC romantic comedy, Luv gone bad.
I remember watching this on the IFC channel back in 2006. I had never heard of it and couldn't beleive Scorsese made this tripped out film.
Saw this movie a few weeks ago. The theme is phenomenal for this movie.
"So I just broke the whole thing off!"
Great video! I just watched this movie and loved it
Couldn't agree more. It is still hilarious! Griffin Dunne is perfect as they everyman having a night in Hell. Thank you for getting into the impact of the soundtrack, I had not appreciated that enough. Scorsese's funniest movie and one of the great comedies of the 80s.
Thank you for your lovely love letter, I enjoyed it
Discovered this as a teen in the 90s, its been one of my favourite films ever since 😀👍
Don't we all have at least that one bad day in our life? But damn Paul could not catch a break. Ending had me chuckling for minutes
Nice upload! Got to call you out on the diner interaction. He didn’t order food ‘just to fuck with him’, it was another illustration of the guilt ridden side of Paul which to me is what makes his character attractive and illicits sympathy. He only went in there to have a piss and knew he had no money. The guy tells him he has to order something to use the bathroom. So he goes through this pretence that he is going to be right back, and to prove it, he orders something. Have you not ever gone into a place to take a desperate razz while pretending you’re a customer? It was done through guilt and trying to cover his ass when some other character might have just said, ‘ f you, see ya!’ Instead Paul again just makes things worse for himself and again it comes back at him later, adding to the mess he’s already in.
Also yes, take that invitation to a loft in SoHo. This movie reminds me a lot of crazy nights in London in the late eighties where you would lose yourself to the city for a night, open yourself to the randomness of human connections, then somehow find your way back home with no car, no cell phone and whatever change you had left in your pockets. I’m a better man for having had those adventures 😉
This movie deserves more recognition
Truly an underrated masterpiece
Dude! Awesome video! Keep it up!
thanks homie!
This Movie is Great, Griffin Dunne Acting was so good.
His comic timing was impeccable.
HIS best movie. Big love from the UK. Best score ever.
sadly Dunne's career really never took off after this.
Great, fun movie!
This is a great film!
I like the metaphor of harmony!
Excellent film. PS Andewr, if you like style in the film, try Diva - a great little French film that reeks of it.

Came out a few months back on the Criterion streaming service, so thankfully this film will get some more views. One of his most interesting films
I love you style of commentary, reminds me a lot of Breadsword
I subbed as soon as I heard u say Over The Hedge 2
That's a surprising appraisal of the film. My main thought throughout the film was that if Paul hadn't been so judgemental, selfish, or uptight he would have been able to avoid most of the troubles he ran into. The women he meet want a real connection with him. He pushes them away due to his own presumptions and therefore receives a deserved perdition. And even then, in the end he just ends up where he started. Meaning if he had just relaxed and trusted things would be fine, he would have been.
completely agree
I dare say you seem to have missed the humor in this movie. As the creator of this video mentions, Paul was not a night owl and rather reluctantly went out to begin with since it was already 11.30pm on a work night. So of course he's not going to have a lot of patience for meeting people who aren't what they seemed (or what he was expecting) in situations that wasn't what he had in mind where things are going sideways at every turn. To each his own, I guess, but I never saw Paul as judgmental or uptight. As he says in the film itself, "I just wanted to leave my apartment... maybe meet a nice girl... And now I've got to DIE for it?!??!" The point isn't "What could Paul have done to avoid all of this?", it's the humor at the complete and utter futility of his attempts at just trying to get home when an impromptu get together with a girl he just met didn't turn out as expected.
Absolutely BS
Which is also why he finally found a savior, and got saved, when he just properly courted a woman with a lovely dance while admitting he just wanted to live.
Dont mind the other replies. Yes its a comedy and an effective one, but this is scorsese were talking about. Dude will always sneak in bigger ideas. He explicitly states in the dvd commentary that its a screwball comedy about going to hell and trying to get out of it.
@@thatgreekguy the "bigger ideas" he sneaked into this film do not correlate with the OP's projection.
great video essay
Also, the Bad Brains usage caught me off guard, love the fact individuals seeing these films would never have heard that otherwise; his use of Sid vicious at the closing of Goodfellas being another solid example.
My favourite Scorsese. I know, I know, but I don't give a fuck, it's my favourite, my love, my one.
The one film that managed to top Taxi Driver for me.
Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not after you
GREAT MOVIE! I LOVE MARTIN'S WORK! PAUL HAD A HELLUVA BAD NIGHT, BUT CHA CAN'T HELP LAUGHING AT HIM! ALL THE ACTORS PLAYED GREAT ROLLS IN "AFTER HOURS!
I remember this movie didn’t get much press when it came out and wasn’t popular at the few theatres it was at but i enjoyed it
I remember soho in those days very different than now- kill for an apt there ;)
Great review for an awesome movie. Pretty vacant productions did a very cool comparison between this movie and Eyes Wide Shut.
Just watched, quite interesting art! Death was chasing paul all over, he escape
My favourite movie
I really enjoyed the humor
Really good movie!
What’s that song that plays at the end of the video? I keep trying to look up the lyrics but I can’t find it anywhere
Gold Hotel - GOLF
lovely review of the movie! by the way, what's the song name in the background at the beginning of the video?
I’ve been trying to find it for days i can’t for the life of me remember what it is lol sorry
@@andewr AS A REFORMED HISPANIC GANG MEMBER from southern California...I can tell you that unequivocally... it's an oldie called "angel baby" ...I forgot the name of the singer.
They played it in the scene at the bar ..
I distinctly remember this cuz most people who were apart of the "chicano" culture in so cal grew up on OLDIES. And "angel baby " is ESSENTIAL listening ..
It's like "LOWRIDER OLDIES 101"
There is a two word description that applies to this entire film that appears on screen briefly.
I remember always seeing the poster in the video store when I was little. Got it on LD a few years ago for a few dollars but I passed it on when I moved.
Come back and make more videos. You cover films that i don't really know but fit within my taste
I started this movie on HBO on a whim, and had no idea it was directed by Scorcese. Loved the atmosphere but the train of events were quite absurd. Its as if the main character was looking for trouble
This movie is what gave me my username
Whats the name of the music at the end?
Agency? Advantageous? Threshold? Disconcerted? It's like every sentence has a word used incorrectly.
hell yeah brother
@@andewr Yes, your scram to cover the internet with bad English is ambulatory and adroit.
I been trying to find the song at the end of the video but no results :( anybody know it??
📺 I turn more people on to this movie. It wonderful !
🔥💯
hey what song did you use during the 9:28-11 min mark?
natureboy - sunsets
I think Michael Imperioli would be perfect in this.
if you like this movie, i beg you to read After Dark by Haruki Murakami. just read it. that's all.
Woah woah woah, “sorry Tim”, I may not myself be Burton’s biggest fan, but-Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is easily one of the top 10-20 films of the 80s, :D
This is also among my top 4. I’ve seen sthing amazing in this movie when I was a kid and it stuck to me too. And, yesterday I saw sthing that puts it right amongst the most brilliant movies of all time
Saw it in the theater and loved it. Rewatched after the Ted Lasso ep and wasn't as into it.
This breakdown gave me some food for thought. Thanks.
It just looks like they filmed this on the same exact set as taxi driver and king of comedy!!
New York?
@@lutherblissett8780 yeah in the same locations
thank you ! i wish you had an edit without any added music.....its very distracting.
I don't think he ordered the meal to fuck with the guy, the owner of the diner said that he had to order something in order to use the restroom
MOHAWK NIGHT!!!
I made this movie
I would like to know your thoughts on The King of Comedy too
