  • This week we replace the idle wheel tyre on the Nakamichi BX-150. It finally began to slip again and the inevitable happened ... the deck became useless. So we do a quick tyre swap. Then we take a look at a new acquisition the Onkyo TA-RW311 dual well tape deck. It's not the quality of the Nakamichi, in my opinion, but it is passable as a middle of the road playback deck.
As an audio engineer it is very common, or at least it was in my day, to have playback units of different qualities available to judge a mix on. Sometimes it sounds amazing in the studio, but turns out horrid on something that most folks would be listening on. So, even in a studio environment it's a good addition to the arsenal.

I was going to mention something about dual cassette players and the lack of them in the Nakamichi lineup, but I see you added that info in post.
    Carry on.

I wonder if Nakamichi Tape Decks are really so much advanced and better in Quality and Performance. Honestly I trust my DENON DRS-810 or Technics RS-BX707 (QUARTZ DD) more than the Nakamichi ZX-7 or CR-1E.

For me they’re the best consumer level decks I’ve worked with. That said, a lot of that stems from the combination of transport mechanism and heads. A Nak deck is very precise. But, as with anything, it’s mostly personal taste and experience. Many manufacturers had good to great decks at one time or another.
I’m simply an audiophile/electronics nut, so I truthfully love them all.

Could you not have changed the tyre without taking the whole mechanism out of the Nak?

I could have. But I pulled the mech for two reasons. Video clarity, and better light for my old eyes.

@@TheRattlebunny i figured this was just a pro move and was nervous I (a novice) would have to take the whole mechanism out lol. where did you get your idler wheel? I saw someone hand makes them and sells them on ebay and seems to know their stuff and leaning towards getting one from them.

@@michitapes I got a replacement tyre from eBay. Though the guy who remakes them is amazing. He’s been away or something during the whole Covid thing. But I highly recommend his work. This particular deck is fairly easy to work on, especially when compared to the Dragon.
It wasn’t really a pro move, I just had a deadline for a transfer and didn’t have time to wait. It was more a desperation move really.
Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching. 😉👍👽

@@TheRattlebunny I just put in a replacement idler tyre and the fast forward seemed to be better but after putting a tape in to truly test, it won't fast forward the tape, and during playback the takeup spool doesn't move at all and it auto shuts off. the wheels the idler tyre touches to move the spools feel kind of rough like they need lubed up internally or something? do you think this is the problem? it feels like these wheels that are connected to the spools are really not moving as smooth as they should be. I heard white lithium grease would be good for moving parts for decks and other things? any recommendations on grease for moving parts?
Anything else you think I could do to help get this new tyre to move the spools better?

@@michitapes There are some other things that could cause the slow down. Are the drive belts in good condition? It could be dried out grease, but I’m not sure if that would cause the issue. The other possibility is a weak drive motor or drive signal maybe? It’s hard to say through a message like this. Which deck do you have?

Nakamichi is ok. They installed so many bad capacitors in their decks that I just can't call them great.

+Darren Wendell I think it tends to depend on when your Nak was built. I’ve dealt with leaky caps on those built after 1990, but I also have seen and owned several from the 80s that are still perfect to this day with originals. Not sure if the capacitor plague from the 90s-00s was the cause of that or not, but it stands to reason. While recapping is, well ... involved, it’s not the worst repair to deal with. I’m currently working on an internal battery leak on an old 486 PC that’s just driving me .... Aaarrgh!! You get the idea.
