Registrace 15. 01. 2016
The Rattlebunny's Den is dedicated both Gaming and Electronics Repairs. Here you will find information on the latest games as well as some retro gaming where possible. I will be trying to use original equipment when I can, though you will find some older games run with emulators like DosBOX and so on. In addition I currently have several repair projects in the works ranging from radios to computer systems.
My background is in the technical end of things. I have a degree in Music / Video Production from the Art Institute of Denver (formerly the Colorado Institute of Art) - 1991. Repairing a Decapitated Fan ... damaged in shipping? Can we fix it?
I am so excited to be back in the lab. Today we're looking at a Chinese made fan from Amazon.com. This fan was damaged in shipping, but not completely destroyed. It was, however, decapitated. Let's see if we can find a way to reattach this silver colored metal head.
This fan may be Chinese made, but hey there's some good things coming out of China in recent years, and I suspect that my having to play MacGuyver to get this cheap fan in use probably isn't because it's from China.
Here in the US, package handling can sometimes leave much to be desired. And even though this fan is cost reduced and has some cheap construction ... it is a METAL fan. And unfortunately this metal fan arrived at our house ... well ... decapitated. Let's put it's wonderfully metal head back on if we can ... shall we?

In this episode we continue the effort to get fully involved in the game as a pirate / adventurer. We will do some smuggling (well ... smuggling lite?), and we'll take a station from a band of Spacers amid Zero-G combat. (And a death or two). Starfield is the latest release from Bethesda Studios and Microsoft. I used to think that Microsoft gaming ... if it wasn't Flight Sim ... was a joke. I t...

This is the first episode in our series covering my play thru of Starfield. We're doing this a bit different thought ... we're not going to follow the story line in game. We're gonna be pirates!!! In this one we get our first ship and begin exploring. We come across a couple of different starfield factions, and end up accidentally blowing up some UC ships ... but no on really notices... Thanks for Subscribing, I hope that it gives you years of enjoyment. These drives are incredibly resilient, but let me know if you have issues, maybe I can help. Thanks for watching, too!!
I have 2 questions: that brown capacitor you have… where can I buy a replacement for mine? 2nd question…. That tester machine you have at 6:59. Where could I get that?
Hey, thanks for the questions! I appreciate the interest. The capacitor is I believe a 10uf 16v electrolytic which can be found online, but might be available to you locally depending on what is in your area. I tend to get mine from Digi-Key (www.digikey.com), but if you have a electronic component store locally it might be faster. The tester is a very simple device that I found on Amazon. It seems to be fairly accurate and reliable. The shortened Amazon link to it is ... t.ly/oTSt8. I hope that helps, just as a reminder ... dim LEDs are usually due to the capacitor drying out or leaking its electrolyte. This can cause its internal resistance to rise making the LEDs dimmer in appearance. At least that was what was causing my issue. Best of luck, let me know if I can be of more help. --Matt--
This mechanism is so finicky! I've never been able to get my BX-300 to work reliably long term, even with a new idler tyre. I suspect that the "elbow" and "shoulder" joints of the idler arm benefit from some lubrication, as if they get stiff, the idler won't bed down as deeply against the other wheels.
Sounds like a good possibility, though I can’t say for sure. I’d be interested in how you make out.
@@TheRattlebunny Actually, I think it's just the elbow joint that needs to move freely - the shoulder (coaxial with the motor) needs some friction, and indeed there's a spring mechanism to help pivot the arm while still allowing the motor to spin. I have improved things a lot by using a fine diamond file to abrade the surface of the idler tyre (once you get down to soft rubber it suddenly gets grippier and starts shedding more material). It took a while (maybe 10 mins) and I think the exposed rubber hardens again quite quickly.
This is a great video. I enjoyed watching it!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Glad you enjoyed it! It was fun to get back in there. 😀

You can press the C= key to continue loading right away, rather than waiting once it's found a file.
+MacbthPSW I did know that ... but in the last 40+ years or so it escaped me. Thanks for memory jog. And thanks for taking the time to comment. 😎👍😉
That's a Sankyo mechanism in these , and I believe there are 2 different idler tyres recommended to be 0k for this mechanism, in reality, only one is probably the correct one , in the future, I will be fitting new idlers tyres to both BX-125 & BX-150 .
+Vidtech thanks for the info. While I don’t have a test tape... yet ...the tyre I ended up using hasn’t caused and strange pitch changes or other weirdness so I think I got lucky with the correct one. Thanks for the comment! Happy listening. 👍😎
OMG I have a nakamichi video too :-)
+Dubious Engineering I’ve always loved Nakamichi. They used to build the best transport mechs, sadly the warmth of the old analog systems is being lost in the digital age. I’m hoping to put together my dream system from back in my the day. There will be more videos.
Nakamichi is ok. They installed so many bad capacitors in their decks that I just can't call them great.
+Darren Wendell I think it tends to depend on when your Nak was built. I’ve dealt with leaky caps on those built after 1990, but I also have seen and owned several from the 80s that are still perfect to this day with originals. Not sure if the capacitor plague from the 90s-00s was the cause of that or not, but it stands to reason. While recapping is, well ... involved, it’s not the worst repair to deal with. I’m currently working on an internal battery leak on an old 486 PC that’s just driving me .... Aaarrgh!! You get the idea. Thanks for watching, I sincerely appreciate it.
This is only a temporary solution. The idler tire must be replaced.
True enough. All the sanding in the world can’t make it new again. But it got me through a time sensitive transfer while waiting on replacements from Japan. Thanks for watching! And maybe, subscribing???
It's okay to lift bottom traces sometimes on the atari where the important connection is actually on the top side of the board. On that voltage regulator, you ripped the bottom trace but the connection that's important was on the top side.
Thanks James, I didn’t realize that. I love learning new things. I have a couple other machines I’ll be working on in the future. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.

I wonder if Nakamichi Tape Decks are really so much advanced and better in Quality and Performance. Honestly I trust my DENON DRS-810 or Technics RS-BX707 (QUARTZ DD) more than the Nakamichi ZX-7 or CR-1E.
For me they’re the best consumer level decks I’ve worked with. That said, a lot of that stems from the combination of transport mechanism and heads. A Nak deck is very precise. But, as with anything, it’s mostly personal taste and experience. Many manufacturers had good to great decks at one time or another. I’m simply an audiophile/electronics nut, so I truthfully love them all.
Such a beautiful map seems a shame not to detail it a little. Hope you will give it a go.
I’ll be working on a bit of that. Though my “detailing” is not nearly as artistic as some out there.
This game is big omg 😱
The maps in the game can range from very small to ludicrously large. Though the large ones take a beast of a machine to run once you built it up. 👍😎👽

Hi, Thanks for the look inside one of those old Mattel Electronics LED games, I finally can see in one! I used to like them a lot, that was really interesting. I been wanting to find a video like this, and its amazing there's no IC chip in there huh! - well I guess they did everything they needed with some of those simple logic circuits I saw lol. After you were done, the LEDs looked real bright just like a new game unit back in the day!! and also haha! the NBA scoring drive music was fun lol. Hey, I also have a few Mattel LED games that have dim LEDs that I would like to fix, but I have a few questions. So main thing is I need to replace the blue capacitor with a new one, ok cool. What was the other part, the dark reddish square part, that you took out, tested and put back in? Just another type of capacitor? Also, where did you get the triangle screw bit, so I can get in there? Looking forward to fixing the two I have with dim-ish leds, a Mattel Football 2 and Mattel Baseball game. That was a nice parts tester in acrylic case and solder sucker like you got makes everything much easier. Thanks in advance for any addition info!
Thanks for having a look, I'm glad that you found it informative and hopefully useful. The triangle bit is from the standard iFixit set on Amazon.com (www.amazon.com/iFixit-IF145-299-4-Driver-Bit-64pc/dp/B0189YWOIO/). The squarish red part is another type of capacitor, these tend to be much more reliable than the electrolytic capacitor that I replaced. However I make it a practice to test these due to their age. I've found that the best way to do that is to remove it from the circuit. The test device I use is also available on Amazon (www.amazon.com/Mega328-Digital-Transistor-Resistance-Capacitance/dp/B07WT9VVZB/) and they're fairly cheap. Thanks for the comment, I'll be starting more technical videos this spring ... I'm currently working on reorganizing the lab ... it's going slowly, but I'll get there. -Matt
When building bridges you can start them raised by using the > key four times and tunnels by using the < key. Hold shift key to adjust them in smaller increments when using m and n keys
This is a great point. You can also use the same method to massage a track into the slope of a hill. You can also change the height of placed buildings like train stations. I definitely use this method when making an overpass, or fiddling with what is ultimately both the length and depth of some tunnels. In the next Durango & Silverton episode I’ll be creating a mountain rail pass where I use this and other methods to get through with out a ton of expensive tunneling. Thank you for your post, Conrad. I sincerely appreciate your input.
I haven’t had long hair like that. In a long time !!!

I was going to mention something about dual cassette players and the lack of them in the Nakamichi lineup, but I see you added that info in post. Carry on. Dr. Demento FTW
Really nice and informative video! If I don't mind asking, but what size of screwdriver do I need to unscrew the bolts off from the shell top?
I think a standard sized Phillips will do it, but some had torx screws if I remember correctly. Not sure of exact size.
Okay then, and so how do you unscrew the inside of the motor for the playable deck to replace the idler?
@@spunkybandy7418 you don’t have to do anything to the motor. There are two screws in the bottom of the unit. And two or three on the top part if you have a lid removed right above the cassette mechanism. Remove the two bottom screws and the ones on top of the cassette mechanism and the whole mechanism can be removed for easier access to the idler wheel. Generally all I do is replace the tire. The tire is removed and replaced similar to an O-ring just make sure it doesn’t get twisted. The tire can be removed and replaced without removing the cassette mechanism. There is a shield that covers the hubs and the idle tire. That shield has two screws in it as well and can come out without removing the mechanism. My hands are just simply too big to do it that way.
