  • Penn & Teller's Magic and Mystery Tour is a 2003 television documentary miniseries starring Penn & Teller. The program was created by the CBC in association with Channel 4 Film.
The show focuses on street magic, and the subjects of each of the three shows are China (Chinese Linking Rings), India (Indian Rope Trick), and Egypt (Cups and Balls, Gali-Gali men). Unusually for Penn and Teller, Teller speaks in the Egypt episode, even though part of their trademark performance is that Penn does all the speaking.

The part with Magic World really made me sad. It reminded me of the VICE doc on North Korea. The whole government putting up a facade about their pride and culture and how hard they work for it, even though there is nobody there interested in such a thing. It makes me so sad to see all of that hard work go to waste. all skills are difficult to learn, but not all skills were created equally, for some are more lucrative and important than others... these unknown hidden cultural hotspots are a testament to the majority of China that is growing up and catching up to western society and leaving the 3rd world behind, but even though they do, there will be some, like the families shown in this doc, that will cling to their dying traditions..

DysfunctionalBubble, it's the same thing here in Australia. We have a government funding body called Screen Australia which channels taxpayer money into mediocre films. Their aim is to promote Australian films, but like any government program, the result is the opposite of the intention. Australian films are so boring that no one watches them.
To get a film made here, you have to convince some committee that your film has merit. I don't know what the criteria are. I imagine that the committee members pick films that will make them look good in front of their peers at their cocktail parties. So they pick films that make Important Social Commentary. They certainly don't pick films on the basis of likely commercial success.
It's the same in France too. They once made such inventive and innovative films. Now their films are just so tedious. I think if I were dragged along to a French film these days, I would take some headphones just in case so I could listen to a podcast if I couldn't stand the boredom.

There is a word in Japanese (KATA) that best exemplifies this. It doesn't matter if the trick is so over done that even the general population knows how the effect is achieved, the artistry is in the perfection of "form" or mastery of it. That's what's applauded. If there is an appropriate Chinese term please let me know!

It's how we used to do it in the west as well. Even in literature for centuries writers started their stories with attributing their work to people who came before them. The ancestors, the old masters, et cetera et cetera. The need for originality is really something quite new in most artforms. Achieving craftsmanship and perfection has been the norm for most of history.
