- Penn & Teller's Magic and Mystery Tour is a 2003 television documentary miniseries starring Penn & Teller. The program was created by the CBC in association with Channel 4 Film.
The show focuses on street magic, and the subjects of each of the three shows are China (Chinese Linking Rings), India (Indian Rope Trick), and Egypt (Cups and Balls, Gali-Gali men). Unusually for Penn and Teller, Teller speaks in the Egypt episode, even though part of their trademark performance is that Penn does all the speaking. - Zábava

I never expected to see a kid chopped up; the rope trick itself was amazing! I have no idea how they did it; glad they fixed it! :D
it was shit
India population: 1.339 billion (2017). Maybe if everybody has one more kid, then everyone will be twice as happy.
@@garyha2650That's literally how the feudal system worked - everyone was motivated to have like 5 kids so they would help in field work.Or when you are older you are dead. And as you can see they rely on their families here in a similar way.The cycle doesn't stop till poverty ends, which will never happen. And it's a problem of distribution, because India and the world for that matter has insanely rich parts. You are just there to judge necessity. Even though you would to the same thing in the same circumstances.

The Rope trick at the Taj Mahal was impressive. He snaked a pole-like support from a basket resting on a dirt floor that was strong enough for a boy to climb. That's really cool.
But then how did they get the rope to go slack immediately?
I agree it was one of the most impressive tricks I've seen ever! Most of the tricks I see I can guess what is happening fairly easily........
It's a great trick
@@upplsuckimcool16 it was a hollow rope probably. If you pull out the pole in one go, the rope drops to the floor.

Going to India dressed as colonial-era British officers is not very diplomatic.
ruanpingshan I'm sure it wasn't intentional, a british military suit and those common gray suits are actually rather different even as a casual observer. Penn and Teller are two of my greatest idols in life and having seen near everything they ever produced I'd say they're literally the spoiled type of rich gullible tards that would stumble into something like that without even knowing it.
Gnomefro WTF they're right where they belong bigoted asshole!
ruanpingshan Claiming cruelty to one animal doesn't matter because of cruelty to other animals is equally ignorant as fuck. I'm no tree hugging pinko but that rubbed me up the wrong way. I'm sure Dr. Mengele said "It's just a Jew." Geeking has no place in magic, at all, and given these two are meant to be rationalists and anti-woo it's incredibly disappointing their stance towards geeking is absolutely fucking as backwards as religious nuts.
+ruanpingshan I was thinking the same thing! Why the fuck would you dress like a colonizer lol
I mean they are white people with money walking around a bunch of uneducated poor people, so no one would say anything. I think if they visit a rich area or a university they may get some looks and even some comments.
You do realise their two biggest shows are called Bullshit and FU? They clearly don'T give a crap about being politicaly correct.
This is the best one from the three. There was some truly great magic. The one with the knots, was right in their hands.
(Having the taj mahal as a backdrop for a cool trick helps of course)
Nice ending! An epic prank that will spread to millions and millions of people throughout several generations, as something legendary that happened in that spot!
40:40 The true Indian is always ready to provide tech support.
That keyboard
LOL I can't believe I missed that.
You Sir, have eyes like hawk! LoL
You're a God Damned Genius!! I know who the real magician is here.
Wtf🤣🤣
47:20 This one line really stood out to me. When Lee says, "The more we trust in our powers of observation, the easier we are to fool."
That's actually really deep. If we're insecure, unsure of ourselves and the world around us, we don't know what to believe, and it's really difficult to accept what we see around us even if we can't explain it. But when we are confident in ourselves, and sure of what we believe in, we trust our own perception more, and are more willing to buy into what we see but can't explain.
38.00 ... "it's a gawd-damned chicken, Toughen up!!" I used to like penn and teller. now they are magestic.
Reminded me of the people who voiced their opinions against traditional cockfighting. Just before they make a stop at KFC to get a bowl of chicken.
@@Kalenz1234 Honestly, I slightly respect people who go all vegan for the cause of "I'm Squeemish and I fear for puppies" rather than the ones who think "I'm saving the world with my diet-limiting gesture!" So they tear a head off a chicken...Do you think it is going to waste? Damned thing is in a stock pot in an hour and was going to die anyway. I don't particularly like bull fighting except when the matador gets gored (I live in Spain). They don't give the damned bulls a reward for winning...they get whacked and dragged around the stadium either way. On the other hand I like recortadores (essentially bull-leaping) becasue unarmed performers get hurt. but I think in the end the result is the same for the bull. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. I like the portugese version of bull runs (touradas or marradas) because bulls get to fuck up a lot of people ... idiots that torment them as well as bystanders. I can watch that on youtube for hours cheering for the unpredictability and strength of the bull that some puny idiot tries to out-smart ("smart" may be the wrong word).
Fun fact about KFC, in Japan people make reservations months in advance for the Christmas rush. What I really want to know is what they do to the bones to make them so soft you can eat them. I haven't eaten fast food in a really long time. That isn't a protest. Most of it isn't food.
I wrote a play about cock fighting using people with umbrellas. No one understood it. I think I won.
@@weirdsideofyoutube9547 Dog fighting is a little brutal and no one eats the dogs...So I'll sympathize on that one.
Most seafood lovers probably don't realize that if they eat clams or oysters they were alive a moment ago or might still be. Lobsters get whacked just a few minutes before they arrive at your table...
If you were starving, you'd kill a chicken and probably screw it up badly.
@@weirdsideofyoutube9547 you didnt want me to repeat what I already said, did you?
Penn said, what needed to be said.

He did that black spinning top thing by balancing the stick thing either closer or farther from the part in his mouth. The smaller the angle formed, the stick gets caught on the mouthpiece; it gets farther, is freed and then spins with the top.

38:00 Eating raw chicken in India OMG how could they.
OMG this Sushi is so great, we love the Japanese ...
Lel eating raw chicken is super dangerous. That’s the difference.
Salmonella is the big difference, for real, eating raw chicken can be deadly...
Eating fresh raw fish is generally safe if the fish is from relatively clean waters, killed very recently and was a healthy fish, raw chicken on the other hand is never truly safe...

Penn and Teller should have bought all those "good luck" rings to help Naseem's family out and then sell them at their show in Las Vegas as souviners from the MMT show.
I read somewhere that they did in fact help him and his family out a lot. They didn't film that though since they didn't want to give out the wrong msg. It was more along the lines of just because we can help him, doesn't mean we should boast for helping him, or something like that.

"I read somewhere that they did in fact help him and his family out a lot. They didn't film that though since they didn't want to give out the wrong msg."
That's deeply, fucking hypocritical. They will proudly fight exploitative con-men to the proverbial death in the US, but in this shithole of a country, they will gladly pay for his dinner.
+Myes They actually said they felt a bit hypocritical. Penn said if this same person was doing this same thing in the US they would be all over him. Different culture and different circumstances I guess.

Good show. Wrapping it up with how a staged performance can turn to myth and actual history was genius.
Great video, I love the authenticity. The animal abuse was really hard for me to watch though, it just broke my heart. I know they live a much harder life than Americans do, but I still feel like animals should be protected.

I wish teller would talk because he has so much to say!
If you stuck a pole into a hollow rope, it would rise bottom-first, with the limp rope stiffening up as the pole was pushed into further into it.
It still could be a pole with a rope around it, and the rope that he rolls up into the basket is just a decoy. They would have to retract the pole quite rapidly to make it suddenly go limp like that, but it seems most plausible.
It also explains why they had to interrupt the trick: before the interruption he lifted the basket.
yeah, and the pole is in the sand with some stick in it horizontally to keep it from falling down, also the hole supports it from swaying sideways.
not sure how the slow rising part is done.
Anyone know the answer? I still don't know how it's done lol
@@insanomonkey someone buried in the sand
Holy shit. I hope the "technical difficulties" at 41:45 wasn't the guy in the pit underneath the basket being smothered to death by sand!!
That doesn't explain how the rope is kept solid.
I dont think anyone died..
The rope is hollow and a wooden or metal pole/stick is pushed through it. The person under the ground just slips the pole/stick through the center of the hollow rope.
Didn't he pick up the basket off the ground with the rope partially solidified though?
Evan Barnes you're kidding me right lol. didn't the trick have to be reset after that.
