Replacing the tilt trim motor on a 2002 Mercury 90 hp outboard

  • As newbie boat owners (back in 2001) we didn't know to change out the zincs and the trim motor housing rusted out over the last 14 years.
    Changing out the motor and motor housing was pretty easy and here's a shout out to marineengine.com for their site and service. I received the parts three days after I ordered them, and the site allows you to search by your engine's serial number. They also provide schematics for each motor system. Tell them I sent you and maybe they'll give me free stuff, who knows.
    Don't forget to lock the engine in the up position using the tilt stop arm or chain it up before you start. And I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on CZcams.

    Good video, I just changed one on Mer. 115 hp. One tip you might want to try when threading the wires from the new tilt/trim motor up through that split grommet is to thread one wire at a time through and put a bit of grease on the wires. It makes threading them through the grommet a lot easier. I also used some very stiff wire and shaped it onto a long thin hook and used to pull all the other cables and wires out of the way when threading the tilt/trim wires through. That way the tilt/trim wires came right up through with no hindrance from all that clutter in the way. It will safe you removing the oil tank.

    For all those asking. YES you can remove the four screws without all the extra work of pulling the assembly. You need a long skinny 1/4” with a 5mm ball Allen head. I can do this in about a hour. You just have to dig in your tools for the right combo. A long 1/4” driver with a socket hole in the handle is best. Just put the two rear bolts in the housing and lower it down in place carefully. The ball allens may not necessary but help

    While your method is fine, the two locking pins that were twisted out are sacrificial and designed to shear off. You use a large brass punch and hammer; and a firm blow to the end of the pivot pins and those small locking pins will shear off and allow the pivot pins to be easily removed. They are also designed for one time use and replaced with new when reassembling the trim unit. Learned this after completing the same project. Though I still wish I saw your video first.

    Do not do what i did by taking the trim unit off the vice and put it on an angle to so its easier to put more fluid in without it coming out and making a mess. My motor blew up like a firework. Cracked right by the screw in the resevoir. Believe because i overfilled it.
    Service manual says fill up to the bottom threads of the resevoir.
    Also always check/add oil when the ram is all the way up. Do NOT add oil when its in down position. How it works is when its down all the oil is in the resevoir. So if you overfill it and the ram goes down all the oil pumps into the motor resevoir and it will crack/explode. Only add oil on motor or on bench vise on leveled surface to prevent overfilling.

    For those if you who missed it, the small black thing is the one protruding in the center of the underside of the trim motor, or could be left protruding near center of the pump. In case it's missing, the Trim Motor replacement part I ordered from Crowley Marine includes a spare of this shaft in three different sizes. The function of this is to connect the motor to the pump. You will definitely know that you missed this part when you assemble everything and filled up the Steering fluid /ATF, and you test the trim motor, the sound of the trim motor will sound much higher in pitch (which means it has no load) and the arm will not move. This simple means the shaft is missing. If this happens, just remove the fluid and unscrew the trim motor again and have this placed on hole at the near center of the pump that matches the shaft. Then put back the trim motor. Be careful with the rubber gasket alignment when putting back the trim motor. Make sure it's well sitted before tightening the screws. I hope this addtional information helps. Thank you
    TheFritz423 for making this video. This really helped me big time! Cheers!

      How do you know which pin to use?

    • @SpeedboatniJojo
      @SpeedboatniJojo Před 3 lety +2

      @@Pet-Sets The right fit is the shortest spare shaft... the key in finding the right size to use is, when you assemble everything back, the shaft is long enough for the motor (upper part of the trim motor,) to reach the (lower part) pump and short enough to be able to assemble it all back and close it... this is a bit of a challenge too since the shaft should align perfectly to the hexed hole that spins the pump. I hope this helps.

    Thanks for this video. I built a special tool ( #5 socket attached to a #five allen key, after cutting the curved handle off and an extention) that allowed me to remove the four allen screws. This cut a lot of time. The only issue I ran into was the wiring, So I spliced the new wires into the old wires so I wouldn't have to pull them through the engine. Once its installed I did the fill /bleed, zip tie and your ready to roll.
