      c fedyszyn yes I mostly meant that they fight it out and put on a show of quality and entertainment. But yes I do agree with you there, there is less variety at the top of the game, it’s amazing power and skill at the baseline but there’s hardly any serve and volley or any net play anymore. It’s just power power power. A good and a bad thing.

    One thing that Simona clearly answered to herself and observers is that she still has the hunger to win, even after winning her maiden GS and being #1. Playing her 5th match in 3 days, and dealing with a blister on her toe, it would have been easy for her to just let the match go in the third to conserve energy. But, instead, she fought tooth and nail to take the title. It's a remarkable transformation from the player who couldn't believe she could win back in Miami 17 months ago.
    And it's little 5'6 Simona Halep that's finally brought back some stability to the #1 ranking after Serena. She's embraced the pressure of being #1 and has played and competed like one.

    A great match played by two of the best WTA players in the world. Sloan's coach gave her some great advice about moving her feet and staying close to the baseline. It's why she was able to catch-up in the first set, and won the second set. But, when you get tired bad, old habits tend re-appear and that's what happened to Sloan in the 3rd set. Both players were utterly exhausted from the heat in the 3rd, but Halep caught a 3rd wind while Sloan had nothing left and retreated to "Montreal". An interesting note: Halep's biggest serves were in the last games at both the FO, and the CO. Check it out. Not sure why she waits until so late in the match to start serving > 170 kph, but it's a nice wrinkle to add when your opponent is dead on her feet and her reaction time has slowed considerably. Her final serve at FO was 175 kph, 172 kph at CO. Considering she could not serve above 160 kph a couple years ago, it has been a remarkable, strategically vital improvement to her game. Si-mo-naaaa !!!

    • @Summon256
      @Summon256 Před 5 lety +3

      Nope...2019 and 2020 consecutively are Halep's years! Lol This is just a mere practice session for amazing things to come! She broke the psychological bareer, which prevented her from winning grand slam and now all hell will break loose! Just watch how Halep will start packing 'em those 2-3 slams per year next couple of seasons! Then maybe a few more beyond that! Halep is no one-slam or even one-season wonder! She will have a consecutive streak of at least five years winning at least one grand slam per season from now on, mark my words! I predict 8-12 grand slams total, when she finishes her career and someone might even saying i am lowballing it! Lol The big problem here is that she started too late (already 26 yo!), if she won her first slam like Ostapenko or at least Muguruza both did (aged 20 and 21 respectively!) she would already have won 8-12 by now and we would be talking Evert-Navratilova slam count territory!...

    • @Summon256
      @Summon256 Před 5 lety +3

      Simona's big problem seems to be Wimbledon though! (Logical, like for any good clay courter, who commits him or herself almost fully to winning as many titles and/or matches on that surface as possible...and just like many clay courters before her, most had problems adapting to cardinally different conditions on grass courts, because of too short time span for the warm-up between Garros and Wimbledon!)...granted, Simona's mire than just a mere clay courter as her results prove, but if there is one particular surface, that appears to be problematic - its the grass! It will be her pet peeve for a while, until she figures it out! But just like some great champions before her she will eventually figure it out! I predict that she won't win her first Wimbledon until at least 2021, but we'll see! Maybe i am wrong and she will figure it out sooner! There is nearly zero doubts in my mind she will win at very least 8 grand slam tournaments! That would be more than enough to put her beside Venus Williams, Evonne Goolagong or Justine Henin in a category of "mid-tier" legends, who won between 5 and 9 slams in the open era! (Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin, Venus Williams, Evonne Goolagong, Billie Jean King and Monica Seles all fall into this category!)

    • @Summon256
      @Summon256 Před 5 lety

      Doesn't really matter! Djokovic isn't really liked nearly anywhere he plays (With the exception of Rome, Monte-Carlo and Asian swing tournaments...), yet didn't prevent him from winning 13 grand slams and collecting career grand slam! The thing is that great champions are winning under pressure! Simona might not be liked by british crowd, but they will have to learn to accept her once she will lift up the trophy at All-England Lawn Tennis Club!

    Great match by both. You can see that Sloane has the more natural power and Halep it seemed got caught trying to hit too flat so she started giving the ball more air, to mix it up which was a good idea. She definitely has to flatten it out against Stephens at times but she has to pick the right time to do so. A match where many set points are saved are great for the fans but offer so many what ifs. The first set is so important. Even if you lose the second, most times that will be enough to make you focus and win the third

You never give up no matter the odds and circumstances, no matter the physical and mental shape, because it was pretty obvious to me that you were tired both mentally and physically. You improved so much during the last year! You deserve the no. 1. Great final and i have to also credit Sloane for being such a great player as well. She chocked several times during important moments of the match but hey, this reminds me of a Simona 1 year ago. ahaddiyaheka santi Simone’s and her fans are idiots. This girl complained that she had to play two matches in the same day because of the rain as if this has never happened before. It happens all the time. Also she played her semifinal 6 hours before sloane but her and her big nose weren’t talking about that. She doesn’t get good scheduling because she’s not a star to anyone except for Romanian tennis fans. She can barely speak English and she has zero sponsorships because she’s not marketable. It’s the way the game is played. She can be number one all day, she’s just not a star.

    • @1111Mrady
      @1111Mrady Před 5 lety +1

      You are wrong all the time. Simona complained because she played 4 matches in 48 hrs, not 2 matches in 24 hrs (which can be acceptable). She could had lost the qualification with this schedule. I guess that for wta is more important the money as the main criteria than the sport criteria. TV companies from other countries give more money to wta than a Romanian one.
      Simona has many sponsors addressing to Romanian market, not zero as you think. You can go on a trip in Romania to see how many ads with Halep are everywhere, she is very marketable.
      agree that some "fans" of Simona are stupid. what you don't know is that in her speech, she asked the permission to say a few words in Romanian.
      She said to some "fans" that next time when they will come to a tennis match, they should change their behavior, a behavior inacceptable in a sacre place like the tennis court

    What a final! They both deserve the title anyway. But it seems to be more emotional for Halep winning the title after accepting terrible schedule arrangement from the official over and over again. She is one of few female players who have the consistency on tour. By that outstanding form, Stephens should have chance to defend her title in US Open 2018. Great tennis and stories.

    With this 7th PM/P5 title Simona Halep is now the youngest active player to hold 7 or more. Next up would be Petra Kvitova who has 8 at 28. Then the rest of the active players with more PM/P5 titles are Victoria Azarenka (9 at 29y), Venus Williams (9, 38y), Maria Sharapova (14 at 31y) and of course Serena Williams with a whooping 23 at the age of 36, leading the pack.

      Seascorp Scorpio that's why she had more winners than Sloane in this match. Lol. And that's why in Australia she had 40, even 50 winners in her matches. She has an excellent defense, but Simona is attacking the ball when she has the chance, not like Wozniacki who just pushes the ball back.

      @Summon256 Před 5 lety +6

      Maybe, but not the greatest! I like Halep-Kerber more! Both push each other beyond their own limits! Both can attack, when its needed not just push...Both are better than the likes of Wozniacki, Radwanska or Jankovic! Stephens needs to be at her best every time she is playing against in form Halep just to even challenge her, while Kerber can push Halep to her limits without even bringing her A+ game! Halep-Svitolina will be great too, once Ukrainian stops choking at Grand Slams and other big tournaments and start working on her consistency! If we are only taking tournaments of "masters" level, then Svitolina now won 4 out of 4, which is impressive 100% strike rate, but when it comes to Grand Slams, its a whole different story...

    A terrific match. Two of the best movers out there. Halep's bh and Sloane's fh are tremendous shots. Three of my favourite matches on the WTA tour this year featured Halep - the semis and finals at Melbourne and this one. In terms of Halep's year so far, I think her win against Garbiñe at RG was her best performance of the year.
