Could you cook the model while the play doe is in it to smoothen it out before finishing?

No I tried. The plastic runs downhill in the oven, the Play-doh burns before it's all smooth and it's very hard to get it out if it hardens. You can smooth it a bit with a heat gun which doesn't cook the clay but it also tends to run downhill a bit. The traditional smoothing with a wood burning tool works the best so far. But I am also experimenting with pre-smoothing it as the plastic flows hot out of the pen. There will be more on that in the next video.

Is there a reason why you don't leave the playdoh in there?

Yes. Several actually. One: it makes it more lightweight. Two: having the shape hollow lets me attach the eyes and noses from the inside, and put in any other optional mechanisms inside like lights, remotes etc. Three: lifting the head or any other shape shifting would be hard to do with the clay inside. Four: it lets me reuse the playdough for the next project. And five: playdough is mostly flour so I am worried that in the longterm it may develop bugs or mold if it's kept in humid conditions. But other than that technically you could probably leave it inside and close it off. It does shrink and dry up eventually so it may rattle a bit.
