  • The things that bothered me the most in my Tesla model 3 is the road noise and the sound of the door as it closes. After reading on various forums, some have mentioned about adding seals to the doors. Here's my how to video to make your model 3 not only quieter but also have a deep sound when you close its doors.

    Update: I tried this for the front doors only. Last week I used a decibel meter with AC on before installing rubber seals. Overall avg was 83 dB with a spike to 92 dB. Today driving the same route with AC on, but with stronger winds today, the avg was 78 dB with a spike to 90dB....probably when using the turn signals. I have enough seals to do the back doors and will then measure again.

      Who said a Model 3 was luxury? It may be in a luxury division when being rated by Consumer Reports, but in no way should the Model 3 be confused with elegance. The fit and finish of a Mercedes is still much better. Now, technology and performance, cost to operate, and long-term maintenance, and most importantly safety? Now you are finding why Tesla is selling so many Model 3's. One ride in a Model 3 (I own one), and luxury is not the word you will use to describe.

    I’m curious about how this impacts the water drains on the door. It appears the additional bottom seal will trap water between the rocker and the door without letting it drain down and out of the door. This could pose mildew and condensation issues.

    • @AutomotiveRomance
      @AutomotiveRomance Před 5 lety +5

      Hayk Samvelyan This is exactly what I was gonna comment. Also covering the folded seam will not allow moisture to escape and potentially cause rust issues in that area (which is already prone to corrosion when not covered). That bottom seal won’t really do anything since the bottom part is overflush to the rocker anyway.

    While the installation side of the video is really helpful, the big thing everybody wants to know to a video like this and you should have done is used a sound level sensor on a given road surface and got the base Model 3 noise levels (substantial enough to have all our interest as owners). Then do this, and end with the drive back out to test the difference and give some comparisons to other brands of comparable cars to see where this puts your proofed Model 3. Just feedback more for future videos, as otherwise great job.

    The typical Tesla owner is more detail oriented, electric vehicles have different challenges than ICE, wind noise is more audible on an electric vehicle period no matter what because for the most part its the only source of noise. As you drive faster which Tesla seems to do better than the rest you get even more noise. Taking extra steps to reduce already industry leading cabin noise is a preference one that detail oriented owners can satisfy with a simple fix. What's the big fuss? Cars make noise Tesla makes the least noise and you can make it even less for a few bucks.

  • @spiitztravsky6333
    @spiitztravsky6333 Před 5 lety

    I doubt this will have any impact on road noise, but I worry about trapping moisture between seals preventing the intended drainage. For example you make a point not to block the drainage hole but don't worry about sealing in the water that would come from that drain opening. To mean this is a lot of effort to change how your door sounds when closing it.

    I’ve tried multiple door seal kits, and have the roof band in place. What I’ve come to the conclusion is this... the road noise that comes in just is not absorbed anywhere. Not like a car that has a roof. It’s my belief that a lot of sound deadening comes from cars that have a roof with a liner and some insulation in it, like a room with carpet, vs a room with hardwood floors... and the Model 3 has the all glass roof. Further most cars have doors with a window frame that buys you more seals around the window itself.

    • @allicks9220
      @allicks9220 Před 3 lety

      Not necessarily true. I have a mercedes c class with full panoramic sunroof. Ultra quiet ride with very little metal or sound deadening in the roof. The Germans are masters at sound deadening and realise that's a huge factor in making a car premium quality. Everything goes THUD not CLANG.

  • @mlim8
    @mlim8 Před 5 lety

    I can confirm this insulation would trap water, at least for the 2 rear doors I noticed after doing a car wash today. Upon open each of the rear doors, water rushed out apparently trapped by the newly installed seal. Anyone encountered this yet, and if you have a clean solution? Or just drill some drainage holes on the seal itself? No trapped water in the front doors though, but must have been that front doors done have the full wrap-around like the rear seals.

  • @pinkelephants1421

    Loved the video. Do you have any footage demonstrating the BEFORE & AFTER noise levels? That would have finished this video off nicely. Growing up in the 1970's & 1980's our cars had the door seals you're demonstrating as standard & NONE of those cars were 'premium' models so it's hard to understand why Tesla doesn't automatically include them.

    • @contractorwolf
      @contractorwolf Před 5 lety

      I initially had a similar issue with the P-shaped seals on the back door, but then I moved them in about 1cm and it worked right. My initial thought was that the P-shaped seal needed to be flush with the door, but moving then in a bit solved that issue for me.

  • @frankvanson
    @frankvanson Před 5 lety +1

    Not a smart idea. Having worked in trim testing at a EU car manufacturer I know that good deal of water gets into the inside of the door via the window seals. With the seal installed at the bottom, see at 02:30 next to the finger on the right side, the drain for the water for the inside of the door gets trapped between the Tesla installed seal and the seal you glued to it.

    • @sloperaly

    • @frankvanson
      @frankvanson Před 5 lety +1

      Alyson V Yes, it would. I have not checked my Model 3 yet on the door exhausts to let water coming in via the window seals as there might be more than the one in the visual corner and there will also be one or more on the rear doors.
