  • Release the KRAKEN! Or rather "Let Loose the Kraken!" as it's spoken in the 1981 film Clash of the Titans. This gigantic scale figure is a part of the Harryhausen Collection put out by Star Ace (Xplus). This is the deluxe edition which comes with a polyresin ocean diorama and a small scale figure based on the sacrificial Andromeda who is bound and chained to a sea side rock.
    Height: 13.77" (35 cm)
    Width: 25.19" (64 cm)
    Depth: 11.81" (30 cm)
    As of this upload The Kraken is the newest figure in the Ray Harryhausen Collection. I unbox, compare to footage of the stop motion model from the film, and showcase the figure as he appeared in an actual ocean environment. And if you stay until the end you'll see more offerings from The Harryhausen Collection including The Rhedosaurus from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Cyclops from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, The Gwangi from Valley of the Gwangi, Kali from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Talos from Jason and the Argonauts, and The Allosaurus from One Million Years B.C.

      The only way it could be better is if it had a silicone skin over and metal ball and socket armature for dynamic posing. Maybe one day!

      @@BatChainPuller Yeah exactly. I think they also could have glazed the body to make it look more shiny and wet. It’s not perfect, but for what it is, I’m not complaining!

      @@electriceyeslide5959 There is a shine but it doesn't translate as a glistening "wet look." I sprayed it with mist for some of those shots at the end to see if they would help. Btw ... Xplus/StarAce showed off a large Kraken bust recently. Sculpt was on point. It wasn't painted but if they can nail the paint I won't be able to pass it up.

      If this Kraken came out back when I was doing model photography I had a whole network of ladies I might have asked. Nobody holds a candle to Judi Bowker though.

    Excellent video of the new Star Ace Kraken. I got the non-diorama version. The Star Ace Kraken has a mostly brown muzzle, but Harryhausen's models have mostly green muzzles. Also, the Star Ace Andromeda has brown hair, but Judi Bowker/Andromeda has blonde hair. Also, I've seen comments elsewhere that the Andromeda figure is too large compared to the scale of the Kraken. Overall, it's still a fantastic model from Star Ace.

    • @BatChainPuller
      @BatChainPuller  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes all those things are true. I understand why they made Andromeda larger than scale because she would have been smaller and thinner than a Lego Figure otherwise. And then there would have been even less detail afforded to her. And it would have been nice if the likeness was closer to Bowker. But all that legal hoop jumping for a little "side extra" I guess I can see from a business perspective why they did what they did. The coloration differences are my main frustration but far from a deal breaker. Kraken figures don't pop up too often and I'm sure we won't see another for an age. If at all.

    • @dragon-ly2xf
      @dragon-ly2xf Před 2 lety

      @@BatChainPullerI was guessing maybe Star Ace made the Andromeda figure dark-haired instead of blonde to avoid paying royalties to Bowker because a dark-haired figure could be another maiden sacrifice instead of Bowker.
      I also have the Star Ace Ymir Deluxe which also has differences from the movie version. The Star Ace Ymir is holding the light pole in the right paw and the man in its left paw, but the movie Ymir is the opposite. Also, the man figure is way too small. Another collector said the Star Ace Cyclops human figures are way too big. I'm not sure why Star Ace is making its models intentionally different from the movie versions since the Harryhausen Foundation is involved with Star ace. Maybe some movie studio legal points.

      @@dragon-ly2xf We may never know. I was originally going to just admire other people's Harryhausen figures since most of the films came and went before I was born and didn't have the same effect as a lot of the other things I collect. But when the Kraken was announced I knew I had to preorder. If I had infinite funds and space I'd pick them all up of course. But Clash of the Titans was a childhood favorite (the last of the Harryhausen films) and the Kraken made a huge impression. I'm on the fence about the rest of the characters they've announced from that film. Pegasus and a 1:1 version of Bubo the Gold Owl.

      @@BatChainPuller I'm old enough that I actually saw 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS as a double feature in the theater when I was a kid so the Star ace models are nostalgia to me. I have the Star Ace Ymir and am hoping Star Ace will release a flying saucer for the second movie. I have a lot of the old X-plus Harryhausen figures, but they're too small, so I'm hoping Star Ace will also release a Hydra, Cephalopod, etc.from the other Harryhausen movies.

      @@dragon-ly2xf My dad was particularly impressed with 20 Million Miles to Earth and it's creature when he was a kid. He still talks about how he remembers being terrified in the theater and then sad when the elephant was killed. I love and appreciate all those films but somehow the only ones that "stuck with me" was Clash and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. The Troglodyte was one of the most emotive creations I've ever seen in stop animation. Hope to see that one too in vinyl.

    A true masterpiece...yeah let's see them do replicas of that stupid remake ( not!!!) This is the original and most beloved movie by fans...I heard somewhere on the remake the main actor wanted nothing to do with bubo because he thought it was stupid. Really? Why the hell would you be in a movie that ppl love and consider the characters trash ? Why were you in the movie. That's just dumb. I felt the same way about the RoboCop remake when they show the original design and said that was stupid and made him black. They just lost half the audience. You shouldn't do a remake if you're going to disrespect the characters.

    did women wear stilettos way back in Greek mythology? and why does the Kraken have pink nipples? 🤔😂😂

    • @BatChainPuller
      @BatChainPuller  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Those are "Cuban Heel Shoes." Early forms of the Cuban heel date to the ninth century, when Persian soldiers wore shoes with a rounded heel for stability while riding horses. But since this is a Fantasy Film and not Historic Fact (that we know of) I'm willing to overlook the fashion/time period mismatches. You got me stumped on the Kraken's pink nipples though. I'll chalk it up to the Greek Gods having a fascination with mixing human DNA in with their beasties.
