- Here's your look at the teaser trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the upcoming animated film from Universal Pictures and Nintendo. It stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike.
The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. It is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri p.g.a. and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. The film is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases on April 7, 2023 (United States) and April 28, 2023 (Japan).

I'm assuming the plot to this is like Jumanji. The way Mario is wondering where he is makes me think the character Chris Pratt plays is transported from the real world into the video-game somehow, then he has to defeat bowser to get back to the real world. Will be an interesting watch.

In a period of time where the VFX industry is so strained and putting out poor quality, its nice to see something that is genuinely impressive. Great character animation, amazing FX work, lovely environment art. Looking very attractive so far!

Mario's voice could use some work, but it's not terrible (though Charles is obviously better for Mario overall). Maybe more scenes with Pratt as Mario would change my mind, but Black as Bowser steals the trailer for me.
Mario's voice works really well imo. Mario is New York Italien so the voice is quite literally Chris' but deeper.

Mario is part of everyone’s childhood in someway. Whether it’s through a main story platformer, a 3D adventure, or one of his many sports or racing spin-offs, we’ve all tried a Mario game before. This is long overdue, and my hopes are high for this movie to be fantastic.

Ngl one of my biggest fears was that Bowser's whole character was just gonna be an unjustified screaming dragon whose only goal in life is to kidnapp princess Peach (which is what it looks like on some game cinematics)... but this Bowser depiction is just fantastic! those facial expressions while talking and the way he leads his koopa army make him look like an unironically evil and intense overlord which a lot of personality, can't wait to watch this, bravo!

Reminds me very much of Super Mario Galaxy Bowser. That was probably the most intimidating version of Bowser in terms of being an evil overlord of a giant army of minions, especially considering the scale of the game. Most of his other appearances he is a much sillier/less intimidating character, especially in the RPG Mario games like Paper Mario and Mario + Luigi.
