Even Jupp Heynckes failed spectatacualry the season before he won the treble in his 3rd or 4th stint in charge. If you go back even further Louis Van Gaal struggled massively in his second season in charge. Jurgen Klinsmann was an absolute clown in the late 2000's. Yesterday’s team doesn’t look like Germany at all. Japan is a world class team I have no doubt since the beginning, but having only 1 dangerous attempt on goal is unacceptable against ANY team. I’m glad that at least they are finding out about what they need to work on. I’m no fan of Germany, but I want both teams to be at their best when they win or lose. The German media said today that even the players no longer had confidence in the coach. For example, in 22 out of 25 games, different defensive formations were tested in each game. There was probably no formation in the defense that was kept for several games. In general, the main criticism is said to be that too many tests were conducted and the players could not get used to the constant changes. The players and the coach somehow didn't really get along.

@@AlonsoFan2023 I don't blame him at all, German squad depth in defense is atrocious, of course you have to do a lot of testing to see who the least horrible players are. Germany has no wingbacks and no striker, this team can't help but fail. It's honestly a great team, lots of world class players, but the wingback and striker positions are crucial and as much as I want to believe in some of the younglings they clearly lack something and at the very least need to grow. In that sense yes, he should've let these young players play together more so they can form chemistry, but that's a gamble, there aren't many friendly games and the national team shouldn't be there to develop players.
And even if he had done that, given the players enough time to get used to the formations, just look at the entire offensive squad and tell me a single name who is likely to score the important match winners. You can't. They can hire Pep Guardiola, Klopp, Ancelotti and Mourinho TOGETHER and Germany won't win anything.
Now you can say I'm being negative and pessimistic, but believe me I see and saw the potential and I stand behind Flick instead of the players or the FA because blaming the coach instead of trying to improve shows a lack of character and character was the only thing they were missing to get important wins. The kind of character Rüdiger has who was in that exact position getting no play time, he took the playtime he was given to make sure they can't bench him, that's a world champion for you.

You can't coach a national team with a club mindset. You have limited resources and training time. You must not be afraid to be pragmatic, because international competitions only come twice a year. You only have a week or two in training before qualification, and if your team qualifies you can only choose the fittest player in another 2 weeks of training.

I watched the game live and germany actually did a decent game for most of the time. Also japan scored very lucky goals if you look at them. But at the end a world class team should be able to defend better and score at least more goals. And the decision of sacking the coach is only partly based that one match, germany had a lot of matches where they really weren´t fun to watch and played horribly
