The song was originally done by the Beatles, but due to a masterful rework of the song and this iconic performance at Woodstock, Joe Cocker will forever be linked to and known for it! He made it his own
The keyboard player Chris Station was the one who created that intro snd arrangment
Fifty plus years later and people are still loving seeing Joe at Woodstock. Your reactions are perfect!
His live album "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" is one of the greatest of all time.
There is a movie too… it has some great backstage and tour stuff as well as the performances.
I remember Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Enjoyed it thoroughly. My only other comment is that I'm surprised there were any survivors of that tour. For those who haven't had the pleasure, find it for yourselves and you'll get the picture.
His female backup singers didn't make it to the concert so his band had to step in.
bit of a traffic jam on the old farm that day
@@YunieDeen13 Hahaha!
Yup, really missed the Delta Ladies on this version ..
@@YunieDeen13 To say the least.
Is that true?!
Paul McCartney said that Joe Cocker gave their song another dimension! this version has become iconic! the sparkling interpretation of Joe Cocker is totally magnificent!🔥love your reactions!
It's Ringo Starr who sings on the original
when John Lennon heard Joe's version he said "It's his song now".....perfect reaction
Joe also covered The Beatle's "She Came In Thru The Bathroom Window" and it was great also. Like I said above, the covers he did, he owned them. Also The Boxtop's "The Letter" as well.
@@lepetitoiseau yes, but written by Lennon Mac cartney
Someone probably already told you this, but there were supposed to be the female backup singers that you were expecting, but they got tied up in the traffic mess trying to get there, so the musicians on the stage did their best to do the backup vocal parts.
Ironically, because the roads were impassable, Army helicopters had to evacuate people who needed medical attention, etc., causing some "hippie" consternation.
The Grease Band filled in perfectly
I've never heard that story before, but it sounds plausible.
That's why that guy was trying to use falsetto to fill in for the missing women.
When the Beatles first heard Joe Cocker sing this, they said 'This is Joe's song now.'. It better than ours.
Some call him the grandfather of air guitar . One of the greatest performance in rock history . My humble opinion .
Absolutely
Rest In Peace Mr Cocker. You deserve to be in the Hall of Fame
HE'S NOT?!!..See, this is why that whole thing is pure BS, and I have no interest in seeing any of it..What a total crock!..I would have just assumed he'd be pretty close to the front of the line...Isn't freaking Madonna in that thing?!..At some point I'm sure they'll find room for Tiny Tim, I guess..Lol!..What a joke!
His version of 'The Letter' by The Boxtops is one of the all time great covers
Yes it is Tod. Right on!
Oh my! I hadn’t thought of that song in awhile. I was a freshman in high school…good music. Thanks for mentioning it.
Feeling alright is one of his songs and one of his best in my opinion.
THE BACKUP SINGERS WERE STUCK IN TRAFFIC AND MISSED THE SHOW SO OTHER BAND MEMBERS SANG THEIR PARTS. GOOD CATCH.
This is what I love about the 1960s. The freespiritedness. McCartney enthusiastically praised this blues rendition.
Yes exactly
It’s almost impossible to improve on the Beatles, but this arrangement did it.
By miles.
Agreed James❗ Even the BEATLES told him so. What a compliment 🔥
I really never liked Beatles version. Not nuts about Ringo. It was very poppish for the Sarg Pepper album. But Joe got it just right.❤
John Lennon said, it's Joe's song now.
Ahhh Mr Joe Crocker no one does this better!@@@@
Joe said of his movements on stage...my body is my instrument and the music comes through it!!🎶 Joe's female back up singers got caught in traffic during Woodstock, so the boys did their part!!🎶🎸🎶🎶
The BEST cover is always Cocker. His music video of "You Can Leave Your Hat On" is so worth a watch/listen.
Joe Cocker's recorded version features Jimmy Page on lead guitar in one of his last session gigs!
One of the best performances at Woodstock. 😁❤️
An electric performance by Joe Cocker. One of the best live performances you’ll ever see. ❤️🔥
You might like to try the group Mad Dogs And Englishmen, Delta Lady Joe Cocker and Leon Russell

Jools Australia 🦘🖤💛❤️🐨 Joe Cocker is one of those singers that have the voice that can make a cover song like it's there own I had tears👍☮️🕊️
Be strong progressive proud stay safe and SANE WORLD WIDE ☮️
🦘❤️💛🖤🌡️🌎🌡️🌏🌡️🌍🌡️🖤💛❤️🐨☮️
I saw him a month after this performance. No one ever came close to singing like Ray Charles...but Joe came damn close.
It pours out of every part of his mind body and soul - every pore of his physical existence sweats in rhythm and harmony.
What a performer, Joe put everything into every song. The magnificent, definitive version of this song.
I was so lucky to have seen Joe Cocker twice, once in 1974 in Macon, GA. He was so drunk, he sang the whole concert lying on his back on the stage. Still a better performer than your average bear. The second time was June 15, 1990 at the Benson & Hedges Blues Festival in Atlanta, GA: the lineup was Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Joe Cocker, BB King & Stevie Ray Vaughan. To this day, it remains the best live music I've ever heard. Another great song written by Randy Newman & performed by Joe Cocker is "You Can Leave Your Hat On." Love you guys!! Keep on rockin'.
Sounds like a real kickin concert! Bet you will ALWAYS remember it. Joe Cocker and Dr. John...I didn't get to see either one perform Live. I did see SRV and BB King. Sounds like a good time!! ☮️
Joe Cocker & Janis Joplin...the crossroads between when the Muse enters an individual and the ability to amplify the energy projected by the crowd and send it back to the crowd....
Joe felt the music with every inch of his being and just let it come out, however it came out. He dgaf what anyone thought about it. ❤
One dark night Joe was heading for a gig, a landslide had covered the road in huge granite boulders 10 ft high. Joe decided he couldn't let the audience down and to make it to the gig on time he chewed through the huge boulders and cleared the road. He made it to the gig on time. Some of that gravel stayed in his throat and gave him that wonderfully gritty voice. One of the few men known to have his soul in his vocal cords. Love the reaction guys!
You are a wonderful author Steve
Joe C and so many uniques… best part of my youth!!
@@kriashun Thank you! and agreed so unique.
I’m older than you but I loved wonder years. My kids watched it.
If you listened to the album version, the person who played the blistering opening guitar notes and electric guitar throughout was none other than Jimmy Page. While Jimmy was working on recording Zeppelin's first album, he went back to the studio to play on the session for this song. As others have mentioned, this song was originally done by the Beatles. As a session musician, Jimmy also played on the instrumental version of the Beatles song "This Boy" that plays during the scene of Ringo walking around by himself in the Beatles movie "A Hard Day's Night".
Cool info! Thanks.
There is another live version of this song from a double album "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" that had a female chorus.
Joe Cocker was the music. He became the music when he sang.
Written by the Beatles, legendary performance by a wonderful British performer, Mr Joe Cocker
Iconic performance from Joe! Check out him and John Belushi doing "Feelin' Alright". Thanks, guys! ✌🏻💀
. STUFF
Joe was a for real wild man. Bless his soul for so many memories the will live forever.
This is a cover of the Beatles, from the album Sgt Pepper's lonely hearts club band
my fav
Another great song of his is
" Leave your hat on."
The video to it is also great
This is a Beatles cover. Joe also covered the Beatles' "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window". If you like this one, you'll like that one too. But one of my favorite Joe Cocker songs is, "You Can Leave Your Hat On".
I was 13 and ran off with 2 friends to go to Woodstock. He had us mesmerized! The girls got stuck in traffic and didn't make it so the guys stepped up to the plate. We left our van 2 hrs away and walked the rest of the road. I spent the best birthday EVER at Woodstock.
Thank you so much for covering this live version of this song. It blows my mind every time I hear it and to watch other people enjoy it like I do gives me joy. Thank you.
His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window".
Absolute Bad ass Soul singer from England. Joe passed away only a couple of years ago in his mid 70s. Great artist. This is a cover of a Beatles song. Joe was very good friends with them, and asked if he could record this song. After he took this already popular song, and as John Lennon said, "It's Joey's song now."
Who doesn't love the Hell out of this performance...this cover❓ ( That totally turns the original by the Beatles into a MASTERPIECE) Just 🔥.There's another LIVE video performance out there, with 4 female back up singers and Leon Russell on guitar 🎸 Amazing 😊
Love the energy of this performance.
When we first saw him singing-with all his hand, arm, face gestures, we thought he had palsy or something? He later revealed he is "playing AIR INSTRUMENTS ". Who doesn't LOVE JOE COCKER?! He can sing ANYTHING- as you will find out once you research his history. Slow, fast, soul, soft love songs- NAME IT! LOVE JOE COCKER ❤️❤️🔥💯👍🏻🤟 RIP🌹
CHECK OUT "Please NO More" LIVE.OMG!! Reaction....PLEASE
Off Night Calls album. His singing got even better with age!!!
His cover of Darling Be Home Soon is very soulful and just a cool song also Delta Lady and his cover of The Letter are great songs among others
Joe cocker’s backup singers didn’t make it to the show because of the mess of trying to get to Woodstock. Thousands of cars were abandoned on the roads leading to the venue. Most of the acts were flown in via helicopter. Also I believe this show is an edited version, many are. Sometimes you can find the full video sometimes not.
This was a Beatles song sung by Ringo. Joe took it to church and made it his own! A masterpiece of a performance! This was 1969!
The backup girls got stuck in the Woodstock traffic jam on the NY Thruway. Hence the band filling in.
"She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" is another master piece of his!
Did y'all noticed not once thru all that powerful singing, did he grab the mic? Or even knock it once with his sporadic movements and we all still felt what he felt 😁
I would love for y'all to react to the studio version, the background singers vocals gives goosebumps 😊
Just the best Beatles cover ever. And a fantastic performance! Backed by The Grease Band, including - a 'best supporting' award should be given - Alan Spenner on bass.
One of many iconic performances from Woodstock! Priceless!!👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥
Another northern boy, (Sheffield, England ), just across the Pennines from Liverpool, where the Beatles came from. Gritty, northern, working class, honest, soulful ❤❤
This was the single greatest highlight of the Original Woodstock concert for me. A simply awesome performance that retains its power no matter my number of views. Which has been too many to count over the years.
You Are So Beautiful is by the “ fifth Beatle” himself- Billy Preston! The Beatles loved his contribution so much they dubbed him that.
Frank Sinatra only did cover songs too. Some singers are great at interpreting a song!
Joe is like a shaman who goes to another dimension and takes us with him.
"FEELING ALRIGHT" AND "Love lift us up where we belong"....!
What a performance, left his heart on the stage rare these days
Not only engrained in your soul, but woven into the tapestry that is America and American pop culture. A culture that is admired and mimicked all over the planet.
A Beatles tune, he killed it at Woodstock. The whole film is great!
Joe gave it EVERYTHING he had. Cool reaction. Thanks.
He is not in the Rock and Roll HOF - which is UNBELIEVABLE - reportedly because he didn’t write any of his own songs (Neither did Sinatra). But who else took 3 Beatles songs and made them their own?
NO ONE.
An exceptional singer/performer.
Thanks for another great reaction-
So, to be in RRHOF one has to sing/perform their original music? Damn shame. Joe Cocker was beyond talented. There should be a SPECIAL award for talent of his caliber 🏆
You absolutely correct
Good music is good music. Think of all the artists who have made it doing Dylan for example.
The magic is the right artist with the right piece of music a la The Byrds with Mr. Tambourine Man.
Joe Cocker with Feelin Alright. Countless others.
My proof reading is bad
Oh he did write many of his songs with Kris Stainton and he considered himself a blues man rather than rock and roll. No matter, the guy was in a class of his own
People, Joe did write some of his music with Kris Stainton, listen to "Something to Say" by them
Mad dog and Englishman Joe Cocker sang, played air guitar, air drums, air keyboard… his whole body was a musical instrument. Please react to: Joe Cocker - You Can Leave Your Hat On (Official Video) HD
This was one of the last songs that Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote together (at Paul's house). It's sung by Ringo Starr on "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. When Joe covered it, I think it was Paul who said he owned it now. Artists and groups routinely covered cuts on the Beatles albums (the Beatles kept their singles tracks separate from their albums) and released them as singles themselves. Earth, Wind & Fire, for example, covered "Got To Get You Into My Life" off the "Revolver" album and had a hit single with it in the 1970s.
It’s a shame that you didn’t hear the version with his regular backup singers, but he still shines here. If you revisit him, please react to “THE LETTER”; it’s fire!
Yes, the version where all his famous singer friends joined him. czcams.com/video/mZNbdgio5j8/video.html
Joe sang and performed with his whole, beautiful being. RIP Joe
The dynamics of his performance here are legendary!
He felt every note from every instrument
The backup siners were stuck in the trafic trying to get to the show so the band did their best falsetto
You are right, Joe did not write a lot of originals. However, it was Joe‘s idea to make this waltz timing. The original was a four count.
Beautiful song. The Wonder Years is my favorite show of all time.
Joe Cocker IS Rock & Roll. He never phoned it in on stage. 🤘😎
As you observed, Cocker was basically a covers artist. WALHFMF, You Are So Beautiful, The Letter, and my favorite, Feeling Alright (written by Steve Winwood). Cocker put his imprint on his covers, and IMO his cover of Feeling Alright transforms and improves it. He may have sung his own songs, but I can't think of any.
Cocker had a history of drunken, out of control performances, and John Belushi parodied him to his face during his performance on Saturday Night Live.
Great, great voice. Thanks for another enjoyable and enlightening reaction.
John and Joe actually performed together, with JB doing his imitation of Joe. It was GREAT!! ✌🏼👍🏻 That's when SNL was really funny, IMO.
Joe Cocker...absolute legend!!!!!! ❤❤❤
I heard a story about the female backup singers, couldn't make it , there was so much traffic in NY.. it's estimated that between 300-400 thousand people showed up.
British soul. It exists man. Music is the heart of who we are as a people.
The Godfather of British Soul.
Put On Your Seatbelts For This Female Powerhouse That Will Blow Your Minds,, Alabama Shakes "Don't Wanna Fight" (Live From Capitol Studio A)..TRUST ME!!!
This song is so nostalgic for me as well.. I grew up watching that show with my family. My brother’s name was also Kevin so we related to it that much more. Kevin had his life taken away in ‘91 at 18. I miss him every day.
Great reaction.
God bless.
The message in this song is by far one of my favorite ever… and his voice just adds that extra soul to this song❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉✌🏽☮️🤲🙏 The Wonder Years, one of my favorite shows😂😂😂
Woodstock was a unique moment in time! Never to be replicated again. Joe Cocker and Leon Russell together is a great listen...some more of the greatest musos from the past.
My sons, are around your age,😊 also loved the Wonder Years!
The band is amazing. Perfect control of dynamics.
Raw and pure music passion!
ahaha guys yes i did the same thing every week wonder years song. but seriously i heard it before that show, but i loved the fact they had it for the intro song.
Joe Cocker- Unchain My Heart - great song.
Jimmy Page played the guitar on the studio version of this song… great cover!
Dude is not shy about showing himself feel the music. 👍
Woodstock.. I wish I was alive for this show
Born 20 May 1944
Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England
Died 22 December 2014 (aged 70)
Crawford, Colorado, US
Great reaction..
Guys..this is a BEATLES song...
Paul and John heard him do this and they said..you sing it better..it's yours ..lol
The reason that the backing vocals were sung by the band is because the backup singers did indeed not arrive in time to go on. This performance is my all time favorite live performance by anyone ever. Joe poured his entire soul into that vocal. I don't know of anyone I've ever talked to who doesn't like this.
When we went to see the movie Woodstock, and I saw this performance I said,Omg! Joe Cocker has cerebral palsy????? I honestly thought that. 😅 And then I realized. 😂😂 My most fav t-shirt in 1971 was Joe Cocker.
I was 16 during Woodstock and knew when I saw this I was seeing something special
That's from Woodstock! I just turned my grandson on to him and everyone who was there. A good way for him to know his mema. ❤
You guys have got to treat yourself to Joe Cocker's song "High Time We Went", The Letter, Feelin Alright, "You Can Leave Your Hat On just to name a few. I saw Cocker in live in concert twice, and he was amazing. Definitely check out these songs guys. Love your channel!
Going "all in" was become part of the modern vernacular, but I think often when someone goes in 90%, people say "they went all in" -- this dude went all in for real... that's the full monty... Cocker, James Brown, (as many have requested) Black Sabbath in the live in Paris 1970 set, Ozzie went all in... I'm sure I'm forgetting others, but there was nothing 90+% about that...
Also, if I remember correctly, the story was that they had back up female singers who were supposed to be there that day, but they couldn't show up for some reason, so they just did the best they could with what they had...
I seen Joe a couple years before he passed away at Casino Rama in Orillia Ontario 🇨🇦.
Is amazing performer live!!!
One of my favorites is "You Can Leave Your Hat On"
"... from the 'Wonder Years..." YYYEEESSS!
He did a nice version of She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, too. Covering the Beatles ain't easy.
Try "When the Night Comes" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" I think those 2 are originals
Bryan Adams and Randy Newman respectively. He wrote very few songs.
I'm so old, I was there. My friends and I still laugh about things that happened around us much less the stage !
