No, I haven't made it back yet, but I plan to. And I have A LOT of happy memories as well of the wonderful folks in Gourock & Dunoon. I can honestly say they treated me better than the folks who lived near the military bases in the US. I left Scotland on the USS Hunley, but Scotland has never left me. Thank you and gawd willing, I SHALL RETURN!
MS1 John Cox - I served on the Hunley 1985-1987 and on the Los Alamos 1987-1989. My wife and I miss those days. Sometimes I get watery eyed when I think about the good times we had back then. We lived in Waverly Court.
I was there from 79 -81 Marine detachment USS HOLLAND. Rock climbing and biking hiking the hills when off the ship . l rented a cottage near Inveraray .
I went over there from 89 to 99 on and off several times about eight times I think longest trip was 9 1/2 months but I sure do love and miss Scotland and the good times we used to have at the Paul Jones
I’m glad to read that , my name is Rickey L Sawyer and I was stationed at the Holland about mid 1975 to 1977, my basic workstation and quarters was in third division which was that large YFNB Working barge linked between the Holland and the floating drydock the Alamos, So far I haven’t found any live footage of the Holland online and I’m interested in seeing if anyone does have any, Third division had its own small welding repair shop , with me being one of the shipfitters - HT
Jerry Lambertson was on the Dock part of 62, all of 63 and part of 64, ran the boat shop charlie section port side and helped rebuild one of the diesel generators down below, some good times🫶 aboard and in town. Remember some really bad weather we had in the Loch, force 8 winds coming down from the north, wow, thanks for the memories.
I was on the USS Holland AS-32 26A loved the place wish I could have returned before we shut her down . The people are amazing .. the food superb and the Pier Disco .. what A blast
Hello Kevin silver and anyone that was stationed at Holy Locke, I was stationed on the USS Holland in third division- The basic working in bulk and quarters was the large yfnb link between the Holland and the floating drydock mid1975 until 1977 when I transferred to the USS Lexington in Pensacola Florida for my remaining two years of my four year hitch, It’s interesting now and for sure anytime sooner to have met people online that served over there, You’re the first basically that I found that served over there fairly close to the same time as I was, and I’m wondering if anyone has any live footage of the USS Holland and site during the 70s how long about the time when I was there including the gentleman that has put these videos out to CZcams, my name is Rickey L Sawyer
I was on the Hunley in late 69 at Charelston. Canopus picked us up in early 70 bound for Holy Loch. We relieved the Simon Lake there. Loved Scotland! Worked in the NDT LAB.
I went aboard the AFDB-7 May 1974 had an absolute blast. I operated the crane with "RICO" and "Speedy Gonzalez" I was not an EM I was an HT, Wesley Owensby was my signalman he was a deck ape BM. David Gadsden, Leroy Holcomb, Wally Walrath, Sam ?, and many many more Gershen, and Skid Box. Phillips EM Crane Operator came from the DD-881 USS Bordelon that I went to in 1975.
Thank you Frank! I'm glad that you have shared for all to see a part of our life on the Dock! I was there 81-83. Starboard crane operator. EM's manned the Stbd. crane. I was working in the wingwall shop. And I remember the pontoon change out. I was a bit more comfortable in the new berthing. And the mess decks was a great improvement also! Again, great video! Thanks shipmate!
For what its worth guys, I was stationed on the Holland and had to crossdeck to the Hunley. A few other places overseas, and then I ended up on the Fulton based in CT. Had to hit the mediterranean again, this time La Maddalena. Tender life does have it's moments.
Great video and memories. I was stationed on Tug Saugus from Feb 85-Aug 87. Seeing the tug in dry dock brings back memories when we were in there, probably 86, man, climbing the scaffolding after a night in town was tough. I loved it over there, still keep in touch with a few of my Shipmates. I even miss the horizontal rain.
We pulled in for an emergency repair over Christmas and New Year '82. Didn't get much sight seeing in. Shore power cables came over in a knot. Wind, sun, rain, and snow all in about an hour.
Thanks for this Frank! I was over there as a yard bird rebuilding the cranes on the Los Alamos. Man, that was the coldest wettest dirtiest greasiest job I ever had, but I loved every minute of it and wouldn't change it for the world. Stayed in a hotel called the Tor-Na-Dee. Partied on the Pier and some bar that had a dolphin statue welded up from pieces of old car bumpers (Blue Dolphin?) The faces of those crane operators look familiar. Most of my memories of that life experience have all but faded away, but you film has brought a lot of them back. Now I know for sure I was really there. LOL
Was stationed on the U.S.S. Holland (AS-32) 12/1979 to when we sailed back to South Carolina early 1982 when the Hunley came over to relieve us. was in "M" Div. A.E.R. En3. Enjoyed my time on the Holland and there in Scotland. Had a blast!!!!
i arrived in mid December of 1979 as well and for the next 18 months, i had the time of my life...SM2 Mike Baker, Navigation division & Clyde Area Shore Patrol
Glad to see your comment, what years were you there, I was there in about mid 75 to 77 , attached to third division , And the below deck where we had our own birthing and small box welding repair shop among the other few detachments of personnel quartered or station assigned there which was in the large YFNB barge link between the Holland and the Alamos before transferring to the USS Lexington in Pensacola Florida
620G from 86 to 89. I still remember those beat up Aggreko diesels for shore power alongside the drydock. There's a $97K FRV tender supply dropped in the lock for us if anybody thinks they can find it.
I came onboard Hunley at the Charleston weapons station in late 81 and was mess cranking on the trip to Scotland. Afterwards, I worked in the Rubber and Plastics Shop, 57B I think…. I wonder if anyone remembers the night we had 140mph winds? One of the subs jumped over the bumper things and caused some flooding.
I watched this fulling expecting to catch myself doing a cameo. Was a crewmember of the Hunley at the time this was shot. I spent many an hour on the Alamos (the floating drydock) both as a member of the Hunley and as a member of the George C. Marshal.
Bob Delp, Bob Wood, Bob Morehouse, Tony Delgado, Patrick McKenna and so many others. In case you stop by I wanted you to see your names and know you’re remembered. We all looked through the Hunley’s periscope. A privileged group.
Reviving the memories of fish and chips (always asked "salt and vinegar?") is a cruel thing to some as they were great. Just don't forget the famous "King Rib" that was also available. All served on yesterdays news...
Someone commented that it was a great time. Not sure about that one. Ha! That was 1967-1969. Was on the 600 boat and we hit a miss charted underwater mountain! Not too fun. The people in Danoon were nice. Drank my dolphins there. That was fun. The girls in Glasgow were…..well that was fun too.
