  • Underway replenishment of a submarine is very much dependent on, you guessed it, where the submarine is! But no matter what, there is a way to get to the sub. This is #NotWhatYouThink #NWYT #longs

    • @Shinzon23
      @Shinzon23 Před 2 lety +6

      Not possible currently for several reasons
      one; submarines are supposed to be stealthy so having a homing Beacon is just asking for the enemy to drop a bomb or torpedo on you
      Two; docking systems: space isn't constantly making both vessels move in different directions in unison, which puts a huge strain on the docking mechanisms; the larger the mechanism, the larger the stresses put on it
      3. If the resupply vehicle is autonomous, were is it coming from? The oceans are pretty big, and having a robot sub trundling its merry way across several thousand miles with no crew onboarding is asking for a mechanical breakdown and your expensive vehicle either immobilized or sunk.

      @@1224chrisng There's a surprising amount of contemporary tech that comes more or less from the first couple decades of NASA. Over the most recent couple of decades though, they haven't really done much to push boundaries. Send a helicopter drone to mars as a "proof of concept"? Bruh, you could have proved that concept in any one of the giant vacuum chambers that NASA already owns. Not to mention 3 generations of mars rovers, and the only thing they learned from the first two was that they needed to store their drill dust samples to be picked up by some future mission (a mission that I'm betting will never get funding). The current DART mission is pretty cool, but don't get me started on boondoggles like SLS and JWST.

    When I was on a sub, we would occasionally take a nub and tell him to get suited up to go topside (while we were on patrol somewhere in the ocean). We would tell him he was going to retrieve the “mail buoy.” It was always good for a laugh. Some stood there longer than others before they finally figured it out. FYI: there is no such thing as a mail buoy.

    If food growth and GMOs can be come effective enough to not only provide enough portions to feed a whole military crew but also provide enough nutrients, perhaps that is literally the only way for a submarine to be 100% self sufficient. I am curious if submarines can be made with tooling to kind of "auto-fish" as it moves through vast swaths of water anyway.
