Goalkeepers were terrible in the 80's. And why were Germany pushed up so much for the winning goal?...they surely would have edged Argentina on fitness in extra time.
You´re right about the goalkeepers - at least as far as Schumacher is concerned. There were three shots on his goal and he couldn´t stop any of them. Probably the worst day of his active career. Later he said it himself: "My goalkeeping was total crap in this final. Otherwise we would have won the World Cup." And yes - Germany might have won anyway if there had been extra time. I guess they were physically superior in that game. Unfortunately they lost their cool - and the rest is history!
Argentina had a younger team and made the ball run better, Germany had to do a lot of physical exhaustion to tie. All this added to the game that was played at 12 pm. from Mexico, with an infernal heat. Germany had no chance of winning that match in overtime.
