30:21 I did not expect my guide will be seen by DF and let alone be showcased in a video. thank you so much for the shout out 🙂
[Try4ce] Happy you got to see this! I took a wild guess as to how to pronounce "Surihix"! As someone who does not enjoy the process of figuring out how to make PC games work better, your work was a real lifeline in producing the PC segment here!
@@mylifeingaming You pronounced it perfectly 🙂And thank you once again.
Like a lot of people, your last video actually got me to revisit XIII; I was 39 hours into it, at Chapter 11, and except for completely forgetting how the crafting system worked, I was able to clear the dungeon I'd left untouched since 2016! It's a game pretty friendly to returning to, at least with the visual upgrades on Xbox Series X (though it's a shame it never benefitted from FPS Boost).
That's why you play on PC when older than 12...
Same here 43 hours at beginning of ch 12 on my ps3 years ago. Finished it yesterday.
I also left my playthrough from a year ago at chapter 11. Went back to remodding right after the video finished and need to go back soon.
I had never finished it before, hopefully I can manage to get to all 3.
It's over a decade old and still stutters on pc with high end components. So no, you're wrong. 3080 still has stuttering when I reinstalled yesterday and if you look through the comments you'll see other people having the same issue.
In fact I just watched the rest of the video and they have issues here with a 4090.......you can have all the power in the world but when your the last option for porting and smallest target audience, the ports will always end up rushed and broken. It's very rare for PC to get a good port these days. Stuttering is prevalent in nearly all of this year's big releases.
Backward Compatible from MS is a magic this game looks great in Native 4K HDR on my Series X.
I've been experimenting with FF XIII on PC and it's a really magical feeling "unshackling" these games from the constraints of their technology and hardware of their time, with the right mods, FF XIII looks amazing in 2023, and very few things give it away the fact that it isn't a recent release (or a better port lol)
FF XIII-2 is still one of my favorite FF games and the DLC ending was shocking to me. The timetravel was amazing
Why is 2 your favorite?
@@helloguy8934 I liked the fights, the timetravel, the story, the enemy was like a more bad ass version of seymore, even the graphics where not that great (especially of the ash future world) I liked the style, the fighting system with the pokemon like monsters... I guess tastes are different. My favorite game of all time is FF8... oh but I wish there would have been more time with Sazh Katzroy in the game. My favorite of 13.
Well, these games still look and performe better than 2022's Pokémon Violet.
Not exactly an achievement, seeing how low PV sets the bar lol.
2018s pokemon lets go pikachu on the exact same system by the exact same developer looks and performs better. Not really a relevant comparison is it lol
FF13-2 is one of my favorite games of all time! I remember loving all three of these games back in the 360 era. The development of these games is so interesting
Having recently played it, XIII-2 has my new favourite soundtrack out of all Final Fantasy games. It’s very ethereal and does feel like a futuristic journey through time.
Thank you Marc for basically making the entire sequels portion of this video yourself.
13-2 was really cool and made it worth finishing 13 for me. I got 13 at or near launch on PS3 and I stopped playing it for over two years after I got half way through. At some point one of my co-workers at the time who hadn't finished 13 and watched it on CZcams instead because he got 13-2 and loved it, so I actually picked up my PS3 save years later and finished it then went on to buy and play 13-2 on Steam using some of the mods mentioned in this video. I agree with the Chrono Trigger comparison and that's one of the things that made it enjoyable for me.
I like the whole alternate timeline concept, plus it's an easy way for developers to reduce costs by re-using older assets. (I liked the PS3 exclusive Tales of Xillia 2 for the same reason, but have seen that others hated it for the asset re-use.)
I really enjoyed these two FF XIII episodes. A great collab as well! The sheer scale of work you all put it in really clear. Thanks so much for such a brilliant watch.
Lightning Returns is one of these JRPGs i just couldnt stop playing till finished. Very Underrated
Really neat that you guys are posting this now. I'm playing XIII on my new system all maxed out with 4k DSR. Bought the game on Steam a while ago. Looks great and it's quite a fun game.
I'm looking forward to checking out Lightning Returns. It's the one game in the trilogy I haven't played.
I'm curious how did you get the game to work? Mine is busted on steam and very stuttery
Lightning Returns is very different from XIII and XIII-2, but is still fantastic.
13 is good, 13-2 is great, 13-3 sucks
@@Liberty_Prime199 Sounds like you ran out of time on part 3.
I think u might like it more than the last two. I finally tried it this year n beat it, never expected to have so much fun especially with the combat
I'm incredibly happy y'all are doing these videos. The XIII trilogy has a special place in my heart, with XIII-2 being my favorite FF game. These games do not deserve the negative publicity at all.
Agreed.
Bruh, you get a like from me for loving FFXIII-2. So fantastic in a lot of ways. As good as XIII was, if it had the same non-linearity and slight improvements to the battle system like character switching mid-battle and Cross/Wide paradigm variants, basically giving more control to players, people would feel very differently about XIII.
They do
I live for these retrospectives. Thanks for all you do, guys, and happy new year!
Long live DF Retro!
Hey! Its me in the video 🥹 24:38
So glad you found my little contribution. It used it all the time when im feeling nostalgic and want to revisit the old 720p HD of the seventh generation.
FF13 ❤
[Try4ce] I can't believe we didn't know about this! I never really have a reason to use the emulated menu, so I never looked... they should've made some adjustments across the platform (One and Series) to unify those settings in the compatibility menu later on. I wish you could make it just go down to 1440p though... that would be the way to play for sure. As it is, I think I'd rather take the resolution bump and deal with the framerate issues or use VRR, because it does look way better to me than 720p...
Thank you Marc for making this part 2 video happen!
The FF13 trilogy is definitely underrated, my personal favorite has to be 13-2 however. I absolutely loved the improved battlesystem and the monstercatching & training. Also Noel and Caius are easily the best characters the trilogy has spawned, especially the latter is a truly epic villain with an extremely awesome theme.
The 13 games are awesome
I played both of these games again last year on Series X, they both still look amazing today at 4k 60fps.
I'm an oddball too, my favourite was easily Lightning Returns, though less enamoured of the time mechanics. The richness of the music is amazing and joyful, and I often listen to it just to relax.
Great video!
I like how John gets guests to say "PS Triple" too
Thank you, guys. These videos have been great. Perfect timing, too. I saw the Final Fantasy games for sale on Steam during their holiday sale, noticed the mixed reviews for the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy that frequently complained about performance, and wondered if they were still available on Xbox with perhaps some performance enhancements.
Came to you fine gents to learn more and, lo and behold, you had a new DF Retro video up about the very thing I was looking to learn about. 😛 Guffaw! Got them for my Xbox Series X and wow. Never did finish this trilogy on the old machines, but now with this level of performance improvement... I think I will. At the very least, I'll make a go of it. Thanks again.
Also, thanks to the Microsoft Backwards-Compatibility Team. I think Microsoft is done with the whole initiative now, but the team did some stellar work! Most of the games I have installed on my Series X are old backwards-compatible games that run better than I could have ever dreamed. An incredible series of feats.
Anime
As a moogle I approve of this being the last video of the year!
Kupo!
Thank you for dedicating so much time and research to this games, I loved all of them even with how flawed they were, loved the story and enjoyed (a lot) the gameplay, this was so enjoyable to watch, specially at the end of the year, happy new year and thank you for your hard work, team, let's crush 2023
Thank you for giving this trilogy the respect it deserves! I also love the short inclusion of the Crazy Chocobo theme. That's how I know you guys really do like this series LOL! Here's hoping to a remaster some day soon!
Lightning Returns is still my favorite of the 3 games, I actually prefer the battle system, thanks to not only the high customization but also the fact that it takes good timing into account, a perfectly timed guard can even fully negate damage from boss attacks, and if you really pay attention to Lightning's animations you can certainly master hitting those perfect combos, with the extra damage you get from such mastery being very noticeable. These were great videos, and I hope people actually give these games the chance that they deserve. Great work John and MLIG!
I know I'm in a minority here, but I absolutely love the sh*t out of FFXIII-2, it's one of my fave games of all time, I've beaten it at least 3 or 4 times all the way through and do so every couple of years, so when I saw you were doing the whole series I was so excited. Thank you for revisiting this (IMO) underappreciated gems.
Meant to say these, englishing is hard when it's not your first language.
Yes, it's my favorite FF game since X.
same, also listen to the ost a lot
If you thought the story on FFXIII was whacky then buckle up buttercup! These sequels add time travel which make the story 10 times more wackadoodle.
I wouldn't even call what the sequels have a story. There's some text in there but it's so poorly written that it might as well have nothing.
I wouldn't call the stories whacky just because they're complex and have concepts that might be out there for our European/American tastes. That complexity and the fact that you never knew where the scenario might lead you is what I've always liked about the XIII-trilogy. But to each their own!
@@noisykestrel I don't think this is a matter of culture but I agree with the second part. That's what sparked my interest in playing them as well.
The world's and gameplay are so cool though
Final Fantasy XII was less so wacky, and more so uninteresting due to the game presenting many actually interesting details in the data log.
XIII-2 is generally more interesting due to putting most of those interesting details at the forefront.
Either ways, the stories in all three of these games aren't very good at the end of the day.
27:00 for the PC version
Another great video DF. But it would be really helpful to mark chapters in your videos DF. Other youtubers doing this already I watch mostly youtube on my LG tv app and with chapters I can jump straight to, for example pc steam version. Please consider this DF. Otherwise, great job.
LAZY DEVS.
Love what DF does. Gotta be my favorite channel. You guys give us straight facts and data. I love video essays and opinion pieces as much as the next guy, but nobody does what y’all do. Been waiting for the perfect time to start FFXIII, looks like this is it
The technical issues of FFXIII's sequels make me appreciate the original even more. XIII's slick pacing, beautiful visuals, and fun combat still holds up. The transition to open world games for FF really reminds me of Pokémon's current open world situation. Muddy textures, unstable performance and pop in like no tomorrow plagued both series. The XIII sequels were without a doubt necessary. Squares devs likely learned a lot from their development on these titles and applied better solutions towards FFXV, KHIII and VII Remake. The later twos smoother performance and better visuals may be due to Unreal 4 creating a more stable game but experience from XIII's sequel allowed Square to get their foot in the door of open world game development. FFXVI will show everything Square has learned in the past decade and I can't wait to see your review of it once it's released.
I really enjoyed these episodes. I still have my copies of these wonderful games on PS3. Whilst I fully completed 13 back in the day, even getting the platinum trophy I struggled to get into part 2. After watching these videos I’m tempted to fire them up again and try to play them through to completion.
Thanks for this series. I've played all games in the series, and I have to agree with your assessment that Lightning returns is the most interesting of the three - at least it was for me. But really they all click somehow. It's clear that their experimentation had a lot of influence in later game mechanics - for instance, Lightning Returns' ability assignment on custom keys made it to FF7's ability assignment system as well. One could argue that even the theme of going against fate in FF7 is very reminiscent of the plot with Caius in FF13-2.
The best thing about Lightning Returns is DSP's unboxing video. If you've never seen it, you owe it to yourself. It is a work of art.
That video is legendary.
I just had a good laugh, even the video should not be funny. It's comedy gold
i think its worth mentioning that auto hdr works great.I have an LG C2 and playing the sequels in Dolby Vision is really great.
Thx for video and happy new year
13-2 is one of my favorite games ever. Very fun overall with high replayability. I'm really hoping that one day SE releases a remaster of this trilogy for PS4/PS5.
13-2 is my favourite out of them
FF13 is my favorite but the gameplay in Lightning Returns felt so refined. Thank you for this retrospective. I hope FF13 trilogy gets a remaster/remake.
Great video, happy new year DF
I feel like these would be great Steam Deck games.
What a great first video for me to happen upon in the new year.
Thanks as always John!
This was an instant favourite for me when I played it at launch, and I still listen to some of the OST on the regular.
Awesome presentation, i got a chance to play the game back in the day, twas very fun to play👍👍👍
Thanks for the hard work, these videos have been really interesting, despite the fact I didn't at all like FF13.
Thank you so much for covering these games!! The FF13 trilogy hold a special place in my heart. I know they have their faults and they're not perfect games, but I absolutely enjoyed my time with them. These two videos are really interesting and I loved learning more about the trilogy's history.
Crazy Chocobo is an absolute banger and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
It's so out of place though when you visit Noel's time lol
I saw a post somewhere of the guy who sang it. He was initially really upset that so many people hated it but is happy to see people have taken a liking or ironic liking to it.
So you think you can rideee this chocobooo!!!???
I can, now, get out of bed. Cause DF always needs a tv. Not a smartphone. Thanks for giving me a reason
not the series i expected but nonetheless really interesting videos, great job boys
XIII-2 for me is one of the best games of the ps3 era. I remember enjoying every second of that journey and didn't really notice anything wrong with the performance.
On the other hand I skipped Lighting returns when it launched and only play it recently when I found it on a steam sale. It's true that it plays nicely at 1440p60 on my 1050 with those random drops they mention.
I'd love to see these games remaster like they did with FF8 or 10
FF 13 2 had good points. I liked that almost everything was real time including many of the biggest action sequences. The music was great, the battle system was even better and Sarah was a lot less annoying than lighting.
But by this point it was clear they were just giving toriyama room to make sequels because it was cheapest to reuse assets and the engine from the original compared to making brand new games. This was SEs mobile obsession phase and lighting trilogy was the only console content they were putting out for a good 4 years....
Pretty sure 13-2 got quite some unique assets, though. Also I think the live action was planned all along, but they haven't managed to pull it off until during development of 13-2, and that's the actual reason 13 got so many FMVs. And... I mean, it kinda pays really, both FF14 and FF15 hardly got any FMVs despite they still could benefit from it, and FF15 also got quite some scripted events that act like cutscenes without actually going into cutscenes.
Best thing to start into the new year
Love these video's. Still waiting for the Crysis 3 video from Alex. :D
I was waiting for part 2!
Dont forget, happy new year ;)
I loved 13 back in the day! Got 13-2 day one and loved it too. Just couldn’t get into LR though.
I absolutely loved everything about the FFXIII sequels. They went bonkers creative in such an artistic way. I really loved the muted golds and purples in FFXIII-2's color pallete, and bravo to SE for making me care about a nothing burger of a character in Serah.
Imma say it again a DF Retro on Falcom Legend of heroes Trails series with y’all two will be great. A true sleeper in the industry. I know y’all will love the music, world building, characters, story
The Lightning Returns dog was actually in the original XIII. We just didn't get to see it up close--and now we know why.
fun videos, it's good to go back to this era.
I remember when i first played FF XIII-2 on X360 and i saw the frame drops. I thought my console had broken, first time in that situation. I didn't have perfomance issues with other games like AC that were big open worlds. Looking these videos(part 1 and 2) i can understand how unique was their release. Trying to achieve high graphics on that generation. It doesn't suit as an excuse, was not fun playing with all laggy, but i can apreciate their effort on the trilogy. Thank you, digital foundry. It was a good retrospective
Awesome video!
if you like the time management aspect, you gotta try breath of fire dragon quarter
[Try4ce] Been meaning to try it for years. I have all of the mainline BoF games and still have never beaten one, hah.
Love that game! Trying to use dragon powers only when needed and unlocking more story on later playthroughs is great!
Absolutely LOVE this trilogy and I would be happy if they simply put it on the ps store again. Lightning Returns has the BEST ending of any Final Fantasy!
I'm really glad to see people coming out of the woodwork to say how much they like these games. The final fantasy 13 trilogy was among my top favorite games for years and I was always so sad to see people hate on it.
The ff13 series is my favorite Final Fantasy of all time. I started playing it when I was going through tough times back in middle school, and now I have finished the whole series in college. It was there when I had breakups. These games always deserve a replay every now and again. Lightning is a fascinating character, and she's female, and she's gorgeous 😍😍
Thank you for these videos 🙏
really nice how much PC ports have improved since ff13, especially on Linux cause of shader precompilation
I love these analysis videos
I'd love to see if they can remaster Lightning Returns for the new consoles, that's the most fun game of the three.
it surely deserves a more sophisticated port for PC.
Oh man, the nostalgia trip...
34:05 you and me...
Happy New Year to everyone who reading this comment!! I wish you many beautiful games with deep narrative and exciting gameplay in this year! And(what's important) many-many hours of spare time to rule them!
While XIII-2 is a favourite of mine I really struggled with Lightning Returns. While the time limit is more a problem in theory than reality it's the battle system itself I really didn't like; I just felt like I was constantly switching to classes not because I wanted to but because I'd run out of actions in the one I was using. At least, that's my memory of it.
I really love the time and dimension hopping of FFXIII-2 and the general vibe of the game, including the soundtrack.
Excellent editing on this one. More joint productions please.
Wow! You Guys and DF Retro in special do something this entire Industrie is forgetting at all.
Keeping the Memory of those Milestone Games and they're History alive and available to a future generation.
Time to grab my old ps3 Slim Console with its SSD Upgrade and give the trilogy a second chance.
Thank you so much for your hard work. Looking forward what is about to come in the future of DF Retro!
I love the soundtrack of FF 13-2 👍👍
I also think LR have a super fun battle system and it’s my favourite one among the three game
This trilogy just reminds me that Hamauzu deserve to compose for much better projects. His brilliant music tends to associated with niche or flawed games.
YEAH GANIMAN CREDIT. I heard that guy is awesome. Thanks for the credit guys, this video was excellent.
13-2 and LR run amazingly on PC for me. I was getting 165 FPS in 13-2 and a solid 60 in LR since its capped
Interesting you mentioned that there are only a few dips on XIII-2 on Xbox One X. I found whilst playing it in 4K in the Bresha Ruins area it often turned into a PowerPoint presentation. Since it wasn't mentioned I'm assuming it's been fixed now, I haven't played it for like a year and a half.
I really miss the 13 saga, i hope they bring all three games to the ps5 either through streaming or a remaster so that i can get the trophies. I literally bought an Xbox series x just to replay all three games again.
how nice of Marc for doing free content for DF
Have never thought playing those games, but now I'm interested. Thanks for a spoilerless review, and I think I'll play the Steam versions later.
I actually love 13-2. It’s a great game. And these games were so beautiful. Plan on replaying them on series x sometime.
I LOVED the recaps
All three of these games are amazing and unique! Any one that says the first one is linier hasn't made it to the halfway point of the game. I would love a remastered version of all 3!
XIII-2 is probably my favourite out of the trilogy and has one of the best soundtracks of the entire FF series, so many memorable melodies there. Loved the pokemon style monster hunting and using them in your party during fights. Although I got the platinum trophy from XIII and XIII-2 I really struggled with Lightning Returns. Didn't even finish the main story, somehow I just got bored before the end. But all in all this series is a much more solid FF experience than the internet makes it out to be.
I own all of them on PS3 never beat the first one I own all of them on pc never even play them on pc.
Thanks for the motivation to go back..
Oh wait I have FF7CC to play! Maybe next year.
Please, Square, remaster this Lightning trilogy.
Thank u Mark and John for this 2nd part really enjoyed this while my ranks go 13 than lightning returns than xiii 2 I can understand y people likes each game for wut they offer 😀
Ahh... Ended with Eclipse. Goosebumps, though the Aggressive Mix is even better.
Too bad there wasn't much about the gameplay in this video. Still my favorite combat and LR serves as my favorite questing platform so far in a RPG. If anyone has a link to a video that analyzes these games' strengths more deeply, please reply and I'll give it a watch.
There exist those of us who revere this trilogy. Thanks for the ride.
[Try4ce] Glad to draw a few fellow Lightning Returns lovers out of the woodwork here. I tried to give the gameplay kudos where I could, but since the games' flaws have so much to review on a technical level, I didn't have that much time to talk about the rest of it! I agree, the quest structure in Lightning Returns is very well-designed. It doesn't hold your hand and you have to put knowledge gained during the quest to actual practical application. It's not just following waypoints. When people spoke out against my opinions about how talking to NPCs and talking to them again can feel like a chore in a lot of RPGs, this is the antithesis of that - NPCs say actual important things that you need to pay attention to purely for gameplay/quest reasons. That's what makes NPCs functional and interesting, I think.
I returned 13 to the store close to the end of the game. I realized I got to a point where I could use the same moves to kill just about every enemy. 13-2 took me by surprise with how good it was. Especially monster hunting and the optional bosses. I spent a good chunk of time getting the platinum trophy on it. I remember one trophy I had to rubber band my controller, at the golden saucer, over night so, hopefully, I’d win some RNG bet or something. By far the hardest trophy to get.
I would genuinely recommend playing these on the 4k Xbox consoles. They actually look rather stunning.
Although I'm quite curious about the steam deck they might pick up the steam versions just to test it out.
FF13 on steam deck runs fine for the most part. Lightning Returns has some framerate issues. 13-2 straight up doesn't work on steam deck.
Works really well on SD with fix. Stutters still happen randomly once in a while but I’m getting 60fps for the most part.
Xbox is the way to go for lighting trilogy 4k
Nice fps review dude, still waiting for de FF one
hotdam love ff13! thank you!
Thank you for reviewing these 3 Games. I Love this trilogy for what they are. When you compare them to others FF Games, the may fall Back, but as i said, they are what they are. FF XIII in my opinion is the best Game in this trilogy, XIII-2 falls back the most because of the confusing time travels ( but Caius was a great Villain). And Lightning Returns is interesting for me because it bring's new Game mechanics like time Limits, which was actually very hard. I Like them all 3.
I always loved the look of these games but never played them, really hope they will remaster them
i love all 3 of these games! 13-2 has some of my favorite video game music ever!
So is a Remaster of these games likely? I mean, you can play most the mainline games on current Playstation consoles. Except the 3 trilogy. Wich as i saw someone point out once is weird since Square pushed Lightning so hard for a while. I played the demo way back in the day. I had no idea what i was doing. But i was also a way youger gamer with little patience for different gameplay styles than what i was used to. But since, i have branched out alot. I've come to love some of the Final Fantasy games. Payed trough FFXV and FFVII Remake, and loved both. Currently trying to force myself to love the original FFVII since i was told i should have finished the original before playign Crisis Core for Spoilery reasons. Find it hard to get into as i've never been too big on turn based combat. And with FFVII not allowing you to save early on, it's a massive pain in the ass dying and being forced to restart the game. Kinda considering just skipping it and watching a Story summary. But i would assume some of the newer games such as FFXIII are much easyer to get into for a newcomer. I really do want to play more FF as i've always loved the worlds ever since i tried one on PS1 ages ago. Can't remember wich one... I think it was 2D. You had an airship wich you traveled across the open world. I think i remember fighting a monster on a roaler coaster track? Loved that one. And want to get more into the rest of them. FFXV was a great hook for me. And FFVII Remake made me something of a super fan. Kinda wish all the games had a real time combat option as that just generaly makes way more sense to me. Turn based just feels off and weird. There's no logic to it in my mind. But still want to learn it and play all the FF one day. Atleast the mainline ones.
SSD is pretty nice in the Xbox 360, all the games I had had greatly improved loading times. I also had the same SSD in the PS3 at some point and saw similar improvements over a HDD. It was clear though that the SSD wasn't operating at full performance due to SATA 1 & 2 limitations, eventually the SSD ended up in my PS4 Pro which has SATA 3 and it really shines on that console.
I'm talking about loading screens, not performance impact when streaming data.
[Try4ce] I have most of my CDs ripped to PS3 and navigating that list is definitely way faster with an SSD. Downloaded game icons also load a lot faster throughout the XMB. It's pretty nice. But no way was I going through the trouble to see what performance was like on a stock hard drive haha.
You can't put SSD in the 360. It has proprietary hdd slot
You can in fact use SSD internally on the 360. I have an E model set up with an internal one myself.
@@fenix_tx_1342 [Try4ce] Can you really? Is that an intentional feature or is it just easier to swap/hack in compared to other models? My 360 IS an E, actually, so this is interesting to me. Although, since I don't have that many 360 games that aren't playable on One/Series, I don't use it that much except when doing content like this.
@@mylifeingaming It's just easier. On the OG 360 models the HDD enclosure was basically a piece of plastic with a Sata to Propietary adapter and a regular laptop hdd inside it.
With the S and E models it's straight up just a piece of plastic to keep the HDD inside it in place, the internal port of both those models it's straight Sata, technically you don't even need an enclosure, but you can open the one you have and put an ssd in there, personally I bought a cheap third party encloure in aliexpress for like 2 dollars to put the ssd.
I'm not a PC player as well, i'm often wishing about an eventual trilogy remaster similar to what Mass Effect got. However, Square has usually a bad rep with remasters/ports and if it hasn't happened already this far, i worry they just might not consider it profitable enough (and that's understandable). Here's hoping, but thanks for those videos that brought us back in what i still consider some of my fav FFs despite having played most of them!
Yeah exactly… but hey if they did it to Final Fantasy VIII, they might do it to XIII. Whether they do it to all three games is probably a stretch.
@@iron_recluse The Final Fantasy VIII rerelease was a remaster in name only
