We hope you get an opportunity to visit. Our rangers are always up bright and early but for the rest of us, last admission to Fountains Abbey is usually at 4.30pm in summer and 4pm in winter.

I always wonder what caused the Roman warm period.

Possibly it was the sudden increase in atmospheric particulates and CO2 caused by the dramatic increase in iron smelting fuelled by burning hydrocarbons during the Roman period. It was the greatest period of industrial production in history until the 18th century. The CO2 and particulates generated by Roman industrial production can still be found trapped in the antarctic permafrost. Between the collapse of the Roman empire and the industrial revolution, most of the iron in circulation in Europe was originally smelted in the Roman period.

Wonderful video. I went there on a school trip back in the late 1970s and have never forgot how seemingly magical the place was. I am definitely due a return visit. Are there secure cycle parking facilities do you know?

Hello Lol Grant, There are bike racks near the visitor centre at Fountains Abbey where you can lock up your bike.
