  • My review of the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1,33x 40 (Compact) adapter. I think this is the best anamorphic adapter yet, but it still has a few quirks that would not be issues with dedicated anamorphic lenses.

    hey buddy- so I just received my SLR Magic Anamorphot 1,33x - 40 (Compact) adapter and love it (makes for great portable anamorphic shooting)- even works with my micro four thirds Panasonic 15mm (30mm full frame equivalent) f1.7 lens on my G85 without vignetting so long as in 4k and e-stabilization is added (cropped in enough).. however, On testing I found if you stretch the 16:9 footage shot with this to a 2.35:1 ratio it is too stretched horizontally at that advertised aspect ratio (2.35:1)…ie. a 2.35:1 aspect is stretched too far and doesn’t look good/natural.. Testing on footage shooting a perfectly circular object (a ball), in order to make the ball look perfectly circular again after desqueezing the footage (and not looking squeezed/oval anymore) a final aspect ratio of only approximately 2.13:1 is required (not a proper anamorphic look) which makes it really only a 1.2x adapter and not truly 1.333x.. did you notice this at all when you had it? Looking at your footage though it looks great and I believe it's in 2.35:1 it does look a little over stretched horizontally as well.. interested in your thoughts..cheers!

      Yeah, it does seem that the squeeze for the adapter isn’t perfectly 1.33x. I have noticed that the focal length of the taking lens and the distance of the subject to the lens and adapter influence the squeeze amount.
      As with any creative tool, it’s totally up to the creator to decide how the tool is used and don’t always have to stick to the rules outlined by the tool. Have fun experimenting and making fun projects with these tools!

      Kyle Lowe Creative that makes sense, like a wide angle lens distorts any subject close to the lens a lot more compared to anything further away.. Trouble is, for best shallow depth of field I want the subject (often myself) pretty close.. But overall love this b for size, weight, portability and even allowing for autofocus.. Happy shooting!

    Thanks Kyle, have to say it looks pretty good with the 16-50 (surprised actually). Edge to edge is fairly clean compared to the other combos. Are you wide at 16mm most of the time? If so then I suspect it might hold well on the 16 or 20 pancake too right? Also what is the shot at 1:55 taken with? Thanks again !

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 7 lety +3

      Yes! It looks great with the 16-50mm, you just need to support the weight of the adapter or you will strain the zoom motor in the lens. Also you need to zoom into at least 28-30mm on an APC sensor. Or the at least 45mm on a full frame sensor. Otherwise you'll see vignetting.

    • @pauldhadialla
      @pauldhadialla Před 7 lety +1

      Kyle thank you! Good point - in that case I suspect it would work ok with the Sony 28mm/2 or Sigma 30mm/1.4 primes as well.

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah, I bet it would work well with those lenses. Just make sure the front lens element is smaller than 40mm across too and it should be fine!

    • @pauldhadialla
      @pauldhadialla Před 7 lety

      Excellent, will check that for sure. The Sigma I checked is just below 40. Kyle one last question if you don't mind. So we stretch then are squeezing vertical resolution so you don't loose 25% of your frame due to post 2:35:1 cropping however there is an inherent resolution loss due to the additional glass on the adapter. Would you say that it mostly a wash in terms of resolution. End of the day it's more for aesthetics (under the other limitations like f/stop / specific focal length etc). The SLR Magic dedicated anamorphic lens' look pretty tempting for the price. Either that or go to a Zeiss/Cooke Prime which is about the same as a BMW :)

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah, the optics in the Anamorphot are pretty solid and won't drop your resolution too much. If you have super sharp glass to begin with, you'll be fine. Properly aligning the adapter and properly adjusting the Near/Normal ring will definitely help perceived sharpness as well. I also have videos on desqueezing the footage on my channel.
      I'd really like to get my hands on the SLR Magic dedicated anamorphic lenses and they're available to rent from lensrentals.com, but buying them is still out of my budget. This will get me by until I can afford to rent and buy the dedicated anamorphics.

    Hi Kyle. Good work. Do you know why some shots are very sharp, but some shots are very blurry? For example, 1:34 is sharp, and 2:00 is blurry. Is there some issue with mounting the adapter?

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 4 lety

      Whoa! IDK why I'm only just now getting the the notification for this comment, but the softness is from the taking lens. The SLR Magic Cine Primes are actually quite soft and they are the reason for the soft clips. The adapter is pretty sharp itself.

    how to work with focus? On the lens? Or slr too? And does autofocus work?

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 3 lety

      Yes, the autofocus will pass through the adapter is it's mostly far away or close up. There is a ring on the adapter for more near or more far focusing settings, but mostly can be done on the original lens.

    Hi, can you use wide angle lenses on this? I have a Sigma 16mm!

  • @tinjos8306
    @tinjos8306 Před 6 lety +1

    Bummer that they don't have an affordable 2x version and you need be at f4 or above.

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 6 lety

      Yeah, their only 2x is the MFT dedicated lenses, but I know people who have those and really like them!

    • @zyxyuv1650
      @zyxyuv1650 Před 6 lety

      Why do people like 2x anyways? IMNHO, 2x is kinda crappy.
      2x converts 4/3 into 2.66x, and 16/9 into 3.55x.
      1.77x converts 4/3 into 2.37x, and 16/9 into 3.16x.
      The latter is more versatile.

      @@zyxyuv1650 Its not about the aspect ratio but the difference in the image itself. 2x yields a certain cinematic character that is unmatched. Thats why 99% of the cine lenses are found to be 2x

    Sorry to bother you ... i know this videos is kinda old but.... i have a question... as work fine with the kit lens 16-50... you think works good with the 50mm 1.8 Sony... ? And for put the adapter in the 16-50 you use an adapter or something? THANKSSS!

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 5 lety +1

      I didn't test with the Sony 50mm f/1.8, but theoretically, it should work well if you stop down to f/4. And yes, I had to get a step up ring to attach the Anamorphic to the kit lens.

    • @qalx
      @qalx Před 5 lety +1

      @@kylelowe Thank you soooo much!!! also you remember which step up ring you attach? to buy those things in my country is hard... this is why i need to buy all in one shippment! thanks again bro!

    • @kylelowe
      @kylelowe  Před 5 lety

      @@qalx Yeah, practically any metal step up ring (that's the right sizes) should work! I believe the kit lens has a 49mm front and the Anamorphic has a 52mm back, so you'd need a 49mm to 52mm set up ring. Double check me on the numbers though, I don't have them right in front of me.
