This is brilliant! We had a tent trailer when I was a kid, which I then took over from my parents when I had my own family. I don't think this would work with a bunch of kids in tow, but certainly for a solo or couple. I've always wondered about stealth camping if you are a snorer. I can imagine thinking you are being all sneaky, sleeping in your vehicle on the side of a road, and having people hear you snoring away, giving your stealthy camping away. lol! I've stealthed outside of my son's place in Vancouver in my little RV. It was residential, everybody parks on the street, kept the lights off, and my animals were all in there with me. I figured if I got a knock, the dogs would bark and it would appear that it was just them inside. I spent 2 nights there with no problems at all. One of the things I love about my little RV is that I can make a getaway without needing to get out of the vehicle. Haven't ever had to do that, thank goodness, but if the occasion ever arises....I'm good to go! -Sue

love it! I've done a bunch of this (commented on part one with my suggestions). A few other ideas...a five gallon bucket makes an impromptu toilet; get some kitchen trash can liners to avoid the need to clean it out. something I never tried, but you reminded me of...police station parking lots. :-) I'll have to try that, next time I'm doing the gypsy thing. A cooler with "blue ice" and PB&J fixings, saltines, etc. stuff that won't kill you if it gets warm. (Pickles, nuts, seeds, some cheeses, crunchy-veggies, un-cut fruit or dried fruit.) Stopping at a grocery before you start looking for your place to bed-down is handy. Probably the handiest suggestion, for those young enough to do it (I gave up this one years ago!) is to stop for 4-5 hours in the early afternoon in mall, grocery or "big-box" parking lots. Park away from the building, and you can usually get a good sleep in, then drive all night. I find after that you can stop at fast food place (with lots of parking) around 6 or so, ask the manager if it's okay if you sleep in your "car" for an hour, since you've been driving all night. I've done that a ton, and can only recall 2-3 times when the store manager said no. When I did that, I'd always go back in to thank the manager, and let them know I was clearing out. Just one less thing on the back of their mind. My rig was a commercial trailer (22' job) that was modified a bit...not as an RV, but, I could use it as an emergency shelter. I pulled it with a F250 (originally) and then an F150 (struggled a bit). I've not done this for years. I've been wanting to get another trailer (probably smaller) and convert it to straight RV (on the inside) with construction logo on the outside.

If a cop were to check in, the best excuse I've ever read is: "Sorry, officer, but I've been driving so long I was starting to fall asleep at the wheel. I thought it was safer for me to pull over asap and get some sleep rather than risk an accident." Most cops I think would go along with that and let you off with a warning to move along first thing in the morning.
We have periodically grabbed quick naps in parking lots -- set up after dark, gone before light sort of thing. Another trick we used once was to set up in the parking lot outside the closed and locked gates of a campground. When staff came by, we explained that we were waiting til the park opened in the morning so we could check in. Come morning, we just packed up quickly and quietly and continued on our way.
The idea of leaving the aliner collapsed never occurred to us... excellent tip that we will make use of in the future, I'm sure.
Finally... the bathroom thing. My wife would never go for the pee-in-a-bottle thing. We tow our Chalet with a van that has tinted windows. If that's your situation, you could always set up the potty inside the van, dump it later the next day during your travels.

I tried that line once, along the California coast. I thought I had pulled off far enough down a dirt road that they wouldn't even notice me sleeping in the back of my Cherokee. Suddenly in the middle of the night, it lit up like daylight. I told them I stopped because I was too tired to drive, they said "well you can't stay here!" Made me get back on the road and keep driving!
I guess they are really strict there.

I'm wondering why all that stealth camping is a thing and why they dont let you just sleeping (your are not even camping just sleeping the night). It's hard for me to understand the problems officials have with all the people sleeping in car. I'm german, here you are allowed to sleep everywhere for one night by law (more nights usually does not matter). Police does not care when they see sleeping people in cars but why should they. You don't harm anybody while sleeping, not in Germany nor the USA.

I would say for #2, you could use a plastic bucket with a sealable lid (and perhaps a plastic bag for easy emptying). I know a lot of people who live out of their vans do this. This is one reason why I would opt for a normal trailer (not a popup or a-liner) simply because while it's not as stealthy, some models do have a wet bath with a toilet (and if you're not so concerned about being stealthy) then having your own toilet at least inside the camper is nice, especially if you're camping in colder temps or the weather is bad.
One thing I would say is that I wouldn't ever really want to stealth camp on the side of the road. I mean while it's probably rare, getting hit by someone driving by would suck and you don't have any way of seeing it coming. At least in a parking lot or some other place / truck stop, would be better because it's less likely you'd get hit. I mean on a city street, all it takes is a drunk to come down the street and you could be seriously injured or killed without even seeing it coming. That's one thing about stealth camping like this that I wouldn't do.

I hope you hit A&W for a bacon and egger when you got up. I think there is a bus trap at the end of that road.... Even the jeep won't take that on. Thx for the stealthy video Slim. Next year you should do a video on raspberry picking and call it Slim pickins.

I know where that is too. I used to frequent the A&W when I lived at the nearby mobile home park (now torn down). He could have also visited the 24 hour Denny's beside A&W. Too bad the Swiss Chalet is gone.

I like your A camper but would want one that I build so I could have something that didn't need so many adjustments. I currently own a camper and it is a pos they purposefully build them to leak and self destruct.

My trailer is just a homebuilt, but even in the down position it looks like it's big enough to sleep in. No stealth camping for me. You have a lot more head space than i do, i think i have 19" but have to deploy the footwell tipout to fit inside.. i do like all your personalization mods though, well thought out..

Do you have to worry about the oxygen level when sleeping in the Aliner when it's down? Or did or can you have a vent or window open.

    • @SlimPotatohead
      @SlimPotatohead  Před 5 lety +15

Not at all. In stealth there's lots of additional circulation in the gaps, plus I have a vent in my door. Thanks! SP

Great videos! Thanks. I’m looking to buy an Aliner in the next few months do this is very helpful info. One question - do you have the trailer securely locked to your Jeep? I’ve been hearing about a lot of RV thefts lately. Sure would be a heck of a way to get woken up by someone hauling off your trailer while you’re inside!

Hi Kath, I've never had issues with theft. If they steal it it's insured for a better one! I carry a hitch lock but barely use it. If I don't have a good feeling about where I camp I don't camp there. Thanks!

Interesting setup, Slim. I'm working my way thru your videos, and enjoying it. You've definitely got a creative streak.
As to seeing outside when you're inside with the top down, have you considered the security peepholes like you find in a hotel door? It might or might not work, given it's only maybe 3 feet off the ground. But you never know.
Thanks for the videos, and keep up the good work.
