- A few years ago I did a series of "Low-Cost Ideas" for my old A-Frame trailer. Here's the first of a possible series intended for almost any small trailer or camper. Most ideas cost only a few bucks, nothing when published was over $25 USD. Camp frugally!

I was a fireman for 30 years and when it comes to fire extinguishers there is one more important thing you should do to make them more effective. good idea where you put yours but one thing you need to do is shake it up. yes that's right, when you go down the road and with all the vibrations the powder will settle and if you have a fire only a portion will come out the nozzle. so make it a habit in your TT set up that you shake the extinguisher or even take it our and tap it on the TT tire. this will break up that powder and if you need it you will have 100% of the powder instead of say 30%. OK I''m done now, keep up the good work, love watching your videos
I like my fabric door-hanging shoe-holder. Basically a 24 matrix of pockets. I cut it in half, added a couple of grommets, and hang them all over including on the back of my drivers seat. Books. Water bottles. Cords. Socks. Glasses. Pens. Plastic bags. Containers of little things. Even shoes!
That's a great idea...I should get one to put over the back of the rear seat in my Jeep and my Bronco 2. A great place to store items within easy reach, yet out of the way and not getting tossed around the vehicle during offroad excursions.
Mike Mead At home I use one of the these on the back of the door to my pantry and I store my cleaning supplies in the shoe pockets. They are clear so I’m not always rummaging around looking for the cleaning product I want.
I found a nice one with mesh pockets so I can see what’s in them but it’s not the plastic that holds moisture .....LOVE them, they hold a lot of stuff, organized and accessible!!!!
Awesome that I'm not the only person who uses them.
I have them in my house in the kitchen for all the water bottles and odd shape things that fall out of cupboards.
But they are great for traveling and shower hooks work on head rest.
Great ldea!
Fry pan put in a dollar store lunch cooler tote. Doesn’t slip, wipeable. Doesn’t rattle.Throw out when too dirty
yayyyy new Slim Potatohead. I don't even own a camper but your videos are super relaxing haha.
Haha same. Camper dreamin!
Slim must be a retired Canadian shop teacher
Brilliant hack using bottle caps to seat the compression rods.
Great set of low cost ideas!
As for the storage of a cast iron pan, I find any where that my wife can't find it when she is mad at me, best! :)
Wise🤣🤣🤣
Get the big heavy kind that she can't pick up. Or that hurts her hand. J K I bought my wife a number 8 that she can use. I have multiple sizes, I always have a Griswold number 6 in the car. Also a silver coated 3. With the butane stove I can have steaks at a rest area or hamburgers. I even cooked rolled tacos at midnight when traveling. Sometimes I do all nighters. 73
I have attached neodym magnet underneath drawer and stick my skillet to it.
Slim, enjoyed your video. Regarding the new fan-controller, beware accidentally leaving it turned down very low - so low that the fan can become stalled, but continuing to draw current. My mom did this back home and melted the variac & the fan motor!
Storage for. Cast iron skillet - my wife found that storing our cast iron skillet in the plastic bubble wrap envelope, like Amazon ships things in, works well. It keeps it the things around it protected from both impact and grime. It's cheap and easily replaced if it gets greasy.
@Dan Dial, this is hands-down the BEST solution anyone's posted. I actually did have an Amazon envelope, and just tried it on some rough roads . Stays greasy and snug in the bottom of my dishpan now. Thanks!!! SP
Just be careful with moisture, the plastic can cause moisture retention, therefore rust 🥺
You can screw a neodynium magnet on the shelf or even the wall and attach the pan on to it!
@@SlimPotatohead I'd be real careful about the moisture problem you create that way too. Put some dessicant packs in there, at the very least. But I think you'd be just as well suited with an *unwaxed* cardboard box trimmed and taped or stapled to fit.
For my cast iron I use grip liner it Dosnt trap moisture And keeps everything nice and secure
Love your low cost ideas. I even love high cost ideas. When you are living in a small space, you need all the ideas you can get to make your life more comfortable and convenient.
I would think that an RV manufacturer would be more than interested in your feed back. I'm in the process of restoring or I should say building a trailer and you are more than helpful with your ideas. Not just in this video, but in just about all your videos. I would also like to thank you for your entertainment. Times are challenging and you are a bright spot.
Amazing how such simple inexpensive ideas and gadgets can make such a huge difference. I love the fact that functionality is your first priority and you find a way to achieve that with such little effort and expense. Very frugal Slim; awesome job educating others. Two thumbs up 👍👍.
Dollar tree is great too
I really like this comment! 🙂
Very informative ideas. That fan speed controller is brilliant.
I agree. Probably best one 😀💕 i have another fan and might need to try that out with thatone.
You do need to know if you have a brushed or brushless motor in order to get the right controller though.
Well done - Was the amp usage / comparison of the new fan controller mentioned?
@@user-rh2od7mf3l I don't think so
I used to have one on a old game console it sounded loud!!
Also, when applying self adhesive surfaces to other smooth surfaces, wipe the receiving surface with alcohol and then let it dry. The adhesive will stick much longer. Brent
Thanks, Brent Henry! Monique
Macgyver Slim! You're on my Macgyver Hero list👍😃 ☮❤🕉
The Canadian Macgyver for sure, he's amazing.
I told my husband, that is what he is.
If you are ever looking for a good way to hold something down, 3M EZ-pass adhesive strips! They look like little strips of heavy duty clear velcro. They are a little bit thicker, but are used for car windshields, so can take the blistering heat and freezing cold. And I have a set that's been in my car for 8ish years with no issues, both Canadian winter and warm summers and they dont budge!
Wow,I've been looking for something like this-thanks!
Yea they work really well. Would be perfect for objects you dont want to move, but can easily get at if you need to. Like a paper towel holder, one inside and one one the outside and you could bring the paper towels inside or out.
Shake your fire extinguisher to keep contents free from settling.
For reliable double sided tape use 3M automotive side moulding/trim tape. Heat and waterproof!👍
Powder compaction is a common problem with vertically mounted extinguishers... I bought a larger extinguisher and have if laying horizontal in a closet.... less problems with compaction ... Doc
That’s good to know. I just shook my extinguisher. Thank you.
Shake and tap on sides to break up the powder, change sides of how it lays to. Try to get metal head fire extinguishers plastic can loose pressure and gauge will still read good.
Thank you
Wow..do you know how many times I've had to take that extinguisher/safety class as a nurse? Annually for 30+ years..not once do I recall EVER being told to shake canister or rotate cannister..makes perfect sense to me..thanks so much..
The bottle top for the spring rod? BRILLIANT!
You’re such a jokester hahaha... always keeping it light hearted with great content and I don’t even have a camper. 😂😂😂
Good ideas ! I think the first aid kit on the door is brilliant, because when it's placed inside a cupboard, it invariably works it's way deeper inside. When you need it for a plaster, you get blood on the gear that you have to move. First rate idea ! Cheers 👍
Some of these ideas would be great to use in a home never mind a trailer.
I'm an 81 yearold Hill Billy Leather crafter, i think i'll make that bed side organizer out of leather, Thanks for that idea.
Great ideas! Have you thought of installing a metallic backsplash? You could hang your knives, spices, magnets with clamps or hooks (dollar store) for notes/pot holders/photos. Oh the possibilities. 👍
Different fires need different fires extinguishers. A very handy one for cooking is a fire blanket. They come in different sizes and you drape it over the fire and snuff it out completely by removing the air it needs. The extra bonus is you don’t have the contents of the extinguisher to clean up after.
Good day Slim!😁. I have one word: Brilliant! Well, two more words! Organized and Economical!☀️🚐🌲🏞
Great tips, Slim! Love your unique ability to figure it all out.
You're a MacGyver for campers, trailers and mobile homes. I look forward in watching your future videos.
the bottle caps were a great idea, enjoyed the ideas thanks!
Yes I'll use that idea
Great video Slim! I started watching your videos around when you made the ammo can wood stove and love seeing new trinkets and ideas!
Im building my own camper out of a 12x6 cargo trailer at the moment and you and your journeys have been a lot of inspiration from the beginning!
Here's to many more memories 👍
Home is where you park it
the button snap idea.. way to go! I have watched hundreds of videos and it's becoming more and more rare for new and unique ideas. Not sure it will work for my space but it's great to see!
Love the water bottle cap❗️
Me too, but I would have taken blue ones to match the colour of the bin behind it 😉..
You mentioned Kiss principal I have used this for a long time. It does really work 😊😊😊😊
One of those little fire extinguishers saved my house from burning down stove fire and it was outdated by about three years
My neighbor destroyed a stove and the cabinet above while trying to cook. He didn't know table salt will stop a grease 🔥fire.
if you don't have a fire extinguisher or want to use it after trying the salt or if you panic and throw water on a grease fire.
Neighbor now has 🍕 delivered or his GF cooks everything 🤣
@@copcuffs9973 Or cat litter preferably with out the cat byproducts.
@@copcuffs9973
Baking soda works great too. Hmm about the same substance use in them. 🤔
So, we owned a body shop for years before we had a waste oil heater fire. Mike had one of those cool, vintage, copper fire extinguishers decorating the paint booth wall across the eight bay shop, from the heater. As the temperature increased with the fire, the bracket holding the 60 y/o extinguisher melted and the cannister hit the concrete floor, dispersed its contents as it bounced across the room, and divinely smothered the fire!
Nice ideas. Thanks. I think the only one I'd change is the box on the tongue - maybe face it the other way in case it's left unlatched. That way the wind might keep it closed rather than the wind blowing it open.
Nice Trillium, I've been full time in my 16ft. Scamp for almost 10 years now.
A tip or so I can give. Best one I know of don't get carpet, add your own after that's removable for cleaning. Do add it if using in colder weather. I'm glad I didn't.
The way and place I store for travel is in paper shopping bags then stacked up together then bagged in plastic bag. Placement is under my fridge or across from it on floor. For weight balance side to side depending on if water tank filled. Otherwise my skillet sets on back burner ready for use. A trick for more counter space when cooking is about 4 ft or so of metal wire shelf. Bend to fit up over burners of stove "Legs" of it about a 13 or so inches long. The ledge of wire to keep it ridgid as shelf will do same. Coffee pot or pan can be set there to cool to.
Those are some great ideas for all sizes of campers. Thanks Slim!
Put the Cast iron pan into a NEOPRENE LAP TOP SLEEVE and store any place you like..no rattle, and a nice bumper to boot.
That's a awesome idea. Bet you could get a used one at a garage sale........if we ever have those again.....wear a mask.
that's a great idea!! I will do that with my pot lids.
One can use those rubber drawer liner if neophrene is not available or costly.. You could fold it over to make a pocket, glue the sides and then figure out where to put it. I would store it in an oven, but he doesn't have one. At least then you can stack other items in it with the rubber sleeve. I would put my smaller ppots/lids inside it when storing. It won't slip around when moving, either.
Don't forget to add some snaps to attach the laptop sleeve (like the paperwork holder) in a convenient spot, like that closet. And get one of those chain metal scrubbies off amazon to clean it with. just add a little water to the pan after cooking to loosen residue, let cool, then scrub with chain scrubby. Also, to re-season periodically with a high temp oil, like grapeseed. Grapeseed oil is a must for cast iron cooking, very high smoke point and more neutral taste than olive oil.
If you use the neoprene sleeve, make sure that it doesn't seal well. You want air to get at the pan to prevent the buildup of moisture and rust.
We travel with a large cast iron skillet. I put it in a plastic grocery bag and store it in our closet on its side. Works for us!
What an amazing video!! There’s something in almost every idea that I can use! And what a great script writer you are!!
I would give you a 5 * review but since you had 12 ideas I will have to give you a 12 * review. ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO. Thank you so much.
Very creative ideas! With the tension rod storage bar, you can use the large bull clips threaded on the rod to secure bags of chips, zip lock bags w/ snacks etc. for your cast iron skillet, I’d probably put a pot holder in it and stack other cook ware on top. They won’t rattle together, and they are protected with the pot holder that you will also use.
Hey Slim love your new trailer.
With the fire extinguisher. It's a good idea to take it out of the holder and give it a shake about once a week while traveling.
This prevents the powder from setting up on the bottom and prevents it from possibly clogging up in time of need.
When you shake it you'll feel the powder moving inside.
Never heard that..interesting.
Steven Wilson ... I do submit it's a good idea for when the trailer is parked for a while. However, when the trailer is going down the road it gets an extremely good shake. I know that first hand. That's why it's also a good idea to check the clasp that holds it in it's hanger to insure it's still secure before traveling.
@@arthurleslie9669
Here's one for you, drive around with a box of baking soda.
The road vibration will solidify
It. It will settle all air space out of the powder. Higher dollar extinguishers eliminates this issue with a two chamber design one for the pressurizing gas and the other is the powder.
Pressing the lever transfers the gas to the powder section fluffing it Pryor to exit out the nozzle.
Smaller Marine type extinguishers don't.
Just a pressurized bottle with a tube that goes to the bottom of the bottle..
It's just a good idea to give it a shake each week to eliminate this issue.
One of the things I love about your videos is the creative modifications you come up with for your trailer. You've given me permission to make mods to my next trailer, thank you! As far as where or how to store the cast iron fry pan, the first thought was a small pillowcase, just to put something around it; but then I thought about the neoprene laptop sleeve that I have for my Chromebook; that might be a better solution; or into the pillowcase and then into the sleeve, it would serve to keep the sleeve just a bit cleaner over time.
13:11 Hahaha, the subtlety with which you delivered this joke was absolutely amazing :)
I stack my cast iron fry pan and casserole together, then store them in a small soft sided cooler bag. The cooler has a plastic liner to protect from anything greasy on the cast iron and the padding saves my trailer if it bumps around.
Yeah. I use soft-sided cooler and tool bags for a lot of stuff. All my special utensils are in a $5 Walmart 12” tool bag: big spoon and fork, tongs, sharpener, oven mitt, ladle etc. I use a lot of those $5 tool bags and the $5 soft sided coolers. Great organizers and bump protectors.
I do the same and it works welk
I tried the soft sided bag for my two cast iron pans...for a bit. Now? I use bamboo paper towels to stop the rattle of any kitchen items...and I can use it to wipe up spills etc...two for the price of one.
add a square of the rubber dollar store shelf liner between them to prevent shifting and scratching.
Could also mount on the back of a door using two supports underneath and a rotating one on top to lock it in place.
I had previously tossed around the idea of using snaps to retain various items, this video clinched the deal and I ordered a kit yesterday. I especially like the fact that the ones you recommended are stainless steel, so I can use them on the outside of my van, with minimal rust staining. Some other great ideas in this one also! Thanks for the push!
Probably been mentioned somewhere else, but it looks like the door shade once had the base brackets installed on the door, but were removed at some point in time and the screws were left in the holes. The brackets would have eliminated the possibility of the shade taking out an eye.
Wonderful ideas. I love the little basket with the hooks. I added it to my Amazon list immediately!
Thanks, Slim! Someone suggested storing skillet under mattress during travel. Just remember not to flop down on bed before removing it. 😀
I'd still put it in something airtight so it doesn't stink up the mattress, if the skillet is cast iron... just a thought.
OMGOSH You have a wonderful sense of humor! I enjoy it so much lol. I just adore your channel slim!! Well done!
I'm happy you are doing great, Billy Bob!
I really loved the water bottle cap idea.
Very smart! I especially liked the idea with storing your receipts!!!
I keep my pans in a pan rack set inside a dishpan. Usually I tuck the dish towels in between to stop the rattle
Love the "Spinal Tap" reference of "...it goes to eleven"....clearly we are in the same age group!
Creative mind, creative life ! :)
As for the skillet ... An alternative to the previously mentioned storage:
You can use an organizer made to hold plastic lids that is designed to be mounted to the back of cabinet doors. It already has a rounded bottom which would cradle the skillet. Wrapping your small skillet in a small towel will not only fill up space but prevent vibration and damage to the underlying surface. :)
Exactly! I have three skillets and I put dishtowels between them while on the road. In my case, I find it easier to put them in a milk crate and put the crate in my truck while driving from one camp spot to the next. Maybe that's a cop out but they are heavy and dangerous if they ever got loose in the camper.
Take apart an old speaker and salvage the magnet. Screw the magnet onto the storage shelf. The magnet will keep the skillet from bouncing around.
Wow, SP! I love keeping organized. Your ideas will be helpful when we get our “new” RV/trailer. (Also, I dislike those plastic blinds. They always seem to disintegrate and look terrible.). Thanks again, I love every one of your videos!
I enjoy all your videos. Love your humorous side. Should share often. Great video as always.!
Little tip considering the placement of your first-aid kit; Always place first-aid-kits and other emergency-gear at a height you can access while crawling, just in case you are out alone with an injury making standing up painful or impossible.
Suggestion for your frying pan during travel: Slip it under the mattress at the foot of the bed.
And thank you for the Badass drum clip!
For your cast iron pan. Two options, but both involve magnets. Mount a decent strength magnet either on the side of a cabinet or into the bottom of the cabinet. If you want to go fancy, use a on/off magnets that has a rotation knob that will deactivate the magnet so you can easily remove the pan. You can DIY it, or just buy it. Cast iron will stick to the magnet and not shake about. You can cover the magnet with a rubber mat to improve traction too.
In addition to fire extinguishers I decided to get some fire blankets. Right now my trailer has one extinguisher mounted by the door, near the front bed. But I also want to add additional extinguishers at the bunkbeds (across from the heat vent and farthest from the door). Adding fire blankets also gives back-up to the extinguishers, and also gives something further to grab on the way out the emergency windows. Fire blankets also smother pan fires pretty well, especially if you don't have a good lid for the pan.
Speaking of pan fires -- once you cover and smother the fire DO NOT UNCOVER until that pan is completely cold on its own. Uncovering too soon can allow the fire to re-ignite. Learned in my own kitchen through direct experience.
I like the tension rod and bottle caps.
I really like the use of the snaps!
Clearly, the secret to your superpowers is the Dollar Store. Thanks for the tips!
I love this guy. funny yet practical.
I love your videos! You ALWAYS give excellent ideas and advice! You are one heck of a smart guy! Thank you once again! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁
I LOVE your tips!!! Enjoyed this a lot!!!
I love the speed controller idea! A much cheaper option than my top of the line 13 speed fantastic fan.
Love the frugal ideas! When I saw your spice rack idea, I laughed out loud because I just bought that same rack. I have enjoyed all of your videos so far, but i really like the fantastic ideas on how to use space creatively. I own a truck camper, and while I have a huge sleeping area, the living space is quite small, so your ideas resonate well for me. Thank you for that.
Attach one or two super magnets to a shelf and set the cast iron skillet on it.
It will not move in travel.
Just don't get super strong ones.
You want to be able to get it out to use. LOL
I've been looking for a bedside hanger. Cool!
You are very clever! Thank you for the neat ideas.
Just stumbled across your video SP...and absolutely loved it. Combine that with your quick wit and touch of humour and I just can wait to watch more! You've got some amazing ideas & solutions....we've just purchased a 26' 1979 Class C to rebuild and make our own...and are voraciously watching videos for ideas to renovate and make it our own...as well as making sure that we take the ideas that have worked for others...let's just say at this point you're a top contender for our "keep watching" list!
Love all your ideas! I call it "thinking outside the box"
Slim some excellent ideas. I enjoyed your video.
Amazing Slim! You are brilliant in resolving issues with your camper. So many things can be achieved just by using inexpensive gadgets as you have shown us. Great job! Love your videos!
Don't forget to add one of those bug nets for the door, so that you can keep the door open, and the bugs out during the hot summer days/ nights.😁
Once again, excellent video and ideas!!
Thanks Slim! 😊
I wonder if Doug saw my video on building your own fantastic fan with that controller haha I'm building my own small camper now :) can't wait to show off my crazy ideas! Love the videos thanks!
HighDollarHobo : HighDollarHobo- I searched for your video, as I bought the fan controller Slim P recommended but it does not come with any directions, but I could not find your video. I did read comments on Amazon about the controller which included some discussions and photos, but the best description required running a separate ground, and that won’t work in my Casita. What is the title of your video? Thanks!
Enjoyed you video. Thank you.
As for the iron skillet, I stop at my local post office and pick up several of their padded envelopes slip my skillet in. No grease spots on wall. I put a hanging hook on a wall or cabinet door then tack a piece of elastic to go across to hold the skillet from bumping around. This is how I store all my pots and pans. Has always worked beautifully for me. Good traveling!
@1629 Citizen, please contact Highdollarhobo by clicking on his icon above. My comments do not allow links. This was not the info I was referring to however. Thanks, SP
13:04 : Okay.... I had to laugh..... It shows only your crotch, and when pressing it makes things look bigger than they actually are... Said as a complaint..... Said no man ever before.... 🤣

then he said, "I don't need that" ;P LOL

Multiple fire extinguishers. Multiple ratings. Different access.
FYI: I believe RV gas refrigerators are one of the biggest causes of RV fires.
Huge fan of that fantastic fan
Enjoy watching your great ideas. Have a safe journey.
Just brought a 1983 burro to renovate, all original fixtures and lights. These tips are wonderful! Thank you for sharing. Peace!
I know you’ve probably seen this but there’s a magnetic strip I see on other campers that people store silverware and knives and perhaps even pans for easy accessibility. Just an idea you might be able to “slim” around and make work for you! Really enjoyed this video and I look forward to more camper modifications in the future! I also think eventually it would be nice to have a tour of your jeep like what you store in it when you camp and travel. Thanks SP!
Great video Slim! And some awesome tips in the comments, so will add mine. Heavy duty velcro from a hardware store, it is designed for outdoor use, like putting a mailbox on a brick wall!! It even works on the vynl walls of my travel trailer, which command hooks only sometimes work. I also got a few dollar store lights, one was a set of string lights that is in the craft section, looks like little houses(thin wood), that I painted up and it runs off 2 aa batteries, just some cute mood lighting for $2 and 2 batteries. I will be hunting bottle caps to use a spring rod to push my shower curtain out!
I, too, ALWAYS find some interesting/informative/practical ideas in amongst the comments in Slim's videos.
I love all those ideas. I'll put few in practice.
Thank you very much for share.
I'm a guy always interested in utility, whether its in an RV, a multi-tool or some other kind of gadget. I love the creative ideas Slim comes up with.
How about using a silicone flan dish to store your skillet?
Brilliant!!!!!
You can find magnetic window shades for cars in Target's baby section....they're awesome...the magnets are strong.
Great idea!
Those were really simple but not bad cheap tricks. Thank you!!!
👍🏻 Clever ideas! As always, another great video, thank you Slim!
