    I appreciate so much that you give commercial authors like Nora Roberts and Ilona Andrews love on your channel. I don't think I follow any other Booktubers who do this. Its very refreshing and as someone who loves them both, its great to hear someone talk about them.

      It's what I like to read, so I feel like it would be disingenuous to not include it as a part of my favorites. I like it all! :)

    I read Agatha Christie for the first time last year and fell in love. I'm three books in so far and can't wait to devour more of her works in the future.

    Great list of favorite authors. Dorothy Sayers, C.S. Lewis and Agatha Christie would be included in my favorites. I love how you chose based on reading multiple works, rather than one particular work.

    lol...who my favourite author is "A REAL MYSTERY"...love what you did there. I totally agree, favourite books rarely are by most read/favourite authors

    Hello Mara! I second everything you said about Nalini Singh. I love the Psy/Changeling series a lot! :)

    Interesting. Of your ten authors, I've only read 5, but 4 of those would also be on my list of favourite authors. With that hit rate, I think I should definitely give your other authors a try.

    I have to think about my favorite authors but Christie and Ilona Andrews are definitely up there. If you haven't gotten to it yet, Michael Lewis's The Fifth Risk is a must-read - terrific/terrifying. Great video!

    I would so join for the Wimsey read-a-long! I read 'Whose Body' about two years ago and have been lazying to get to the others! Hopefully following along with you will make me get to those books! And of course Ilona Andrews is my currently writing 'urban fantasy/fantasy/paranormal etc.' favourite author too!! I think I like the use of mythology in urban settings and that the characters always feel fully formed and not half a**ed in their books! TBD on the all time favourite though unfortunately ...

    I didn't know about Flannery O'Connor and am now intrigued. And due to your absolute joy in Agatha Christie I have been inspired to re-read and new-read all of her volumes...probably starting with either the stand-alones or the smaller series.
    These are my favorite authors (in no particular order), if I go by sheer enjoyment in conjunction with the amount of their works I have read:
    Jane Austen
    Matthew Reilly
    Jim Butcher
    Neil Gaiman
    Stephen King
    Mary Balogh
    HP Lovecraft
    Naomi Novik
    Garth Nix
    Elizabeth Peters/Barbar Mertz
    Honorable Mention: Patricia Cornwell...I really enjoyed her Scarpetta series until she started writing in present tense.

    Georgette Heyer, Patricia Veryan, Dorothy Dunnett, Dorothy Sayers, Margery Allingham, Nora Roberts... and so many more! (And some of them male too!)

    You opened with a great observation about favorite books not necessarily from favorite authors. I hadn’t thought about that one before.
    You’ve inspired me to read Are Women Human. There’s a fantastic bio of her by Carolyn Heilbrun who, coincidentally, wrote mysteries under a pseudonym. They’re good, especially the earlier books, and full of thoughts on feminism. Because you don’t have enough to read and I’m here to help.
    Favorite authors are Christie, who was truly my bridge into adult books, and Anthony Trollope on the classic side. Going beyond those two...oh dear. Too much of a jumble in my head.

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  Před 5 lety

      Haha yes, so many books, so little time! There's several big bios of Sayers out there, so good to hear an endorsement for a specific one :)

    I would consider myself a newer viewer of your channel, but I totally guessed your top pick. 😂 I read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when I was younger, but I admit there the only CS Lewis I’ve read. I really love Nora Roberts, especially the JD Robb series. She’s pretty consistent, and I know I’m going to have a good time reading her books! I’ve never read Agatha Christie. It always seemed there was something newer and more “ooh shiny” to read, and then I didn’t read at all for a few years because I was too busy knitting, and I don’t enjoy audiobooks. I love mysteries, though! Do you have any recommendations about where to start for someone who has never read Agatha Christie?

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  Před 5 lety +1

      Haha, glad to know my brand comes through loud & clear! :) I've got a couple of Where to Start with videos on Christie (one for her whole oeuvre & one for Poirot). I'd probably recommend And Then There Were None or Murder on the Orient Express as the best places to start, but it all depends on your preferences for mystery

    Favorite writer number 1 is John Updike and others in no particular order. Jonathan Franzen, Jane Smiley, Anne Tyler, Mona Simpson, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Arthur Miller and Stephen King, go figure.

    I'm so shocked by your favorite author. 😂 Here are my favorite authors : Edgar Allan Poe, Agatha Christie, Ilona Andrews, Robert Crais, Kresley Cole, Nalini Singh, Anne Bishop, Suzanne Wright, Annette Marie (she's a relatively new find for me) and Penelope Sky (she's my favorite guilty pleasure dark romance read)

  • @iansmith4023
    @iansmith4023 Před 5 lety

    Christie also tops the list for me;with C.S.Lewis' Narnia Chronicles not far behind. I am also a fan of Ian Fleming (a legacy of my teenage years);but,having read several biographies of him,he is a very difficult man to like.Much of his personal life (from the age of about 18 onward) can be accurately described as 'reprehensible'.
    My father was a huge fan of Dorothy L. Sayers. I keep meaning to give her a go. What was it about Five Red Herrings you disliked? (Have you done a YT video about it?)

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  Před 5 lety

      It was the kind of mystery where most of the book is spent diving into the minutia of a timeline, and that's just not my personal preference for mystery. Definitely YMMV

  • @thirtynine392001

    I would have to say that Edgar Allan Poe is my all-time favorite author.

  • @BeautifullyBookishBethany

    I haven't done a lot of these kinds of videos either. I'm always a little hesitant because one of my favorite authors through my teenage years and early 20's is very controversial these days, especially on booktube.

    My favorite author is without a doubt Kresley Cole and always will be. I’m torn between Penelope Douglas and K. Webster for my favorite Indie author - they’re both amazing.
    I agree with you on Nalini Singh and Jessica Clare. Singh is a better writer and I connect more to her stories than Clare’s, but they’re both very good and I really enjoy their books.

      bookslikewhoa I always have a great time when I’m reading her and it’s been too long since I have. I haven’t read her since Wicked Abyss came out, but I want to do a re-read of the IAD series this year, I really love where she’s taken it in these last couple of books 😁
