  • Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, or Lapsang Souchong is the world's first black tea dated in the 16th century. This historical tea is as mysterious as its international fame. Tong Mu Village, instead of Tong Mu Guan, is the birth place of this tea and still is the core production area for both traditional smoked Lapsang tea and unsmoked Lapsang tea. There are many misunderstanding or fake stories to be told about this tea or Tong Mu Village since the area is restricted to any Chinese who doesn't live in there or foreigners. We were lucky to be able to go in with our Lapsang tea's producer Bei Bei Zhang and get first hand traditional smoked Laspang tea's production footage. Our goal here is to unravel some of the mysteries about this tea, such as how an authentic smoked Lapsang black tea is produced, why it's becoming more and more scarce in China, what are some of the chain effect of cultural loss this tea brings because of its gradual disappearance within China, and the challenges this tea is facing and will continue facing in the future. Hope you will enjoy the video and thank you for your support!
Please excuse some of the shaky footage since the last part of the road into Ma Su, Tong Mu Village is basically "no road", or say just bumpy dirt road.

This was amazing, almost felt as if I was there myself. Thanks for making it, in English as well. I will continue to buy Lapsang Souchong tea from this region, it's delicious and a tradition worth preserving.

Thank you so much for making this. Such a beautiful land and people. I just started drinking loose leaf tea and discovered Lapsang and love that too. Haven’t tried the Tongmu yet but now that I understand the history and difference with this and others it’s high in my list. Thanks again!

Firstly, thank you for this amazing and lovely video! This was my first REAL Chinese tea, that I got through an old Chinese friend many years ago. I was wondering how I could support the farms here, like Bei Bei's, if there was a way to buy tea directly from them or through a store that ensures the profits go to them to help preserve this ancient tea?
Thank you and Love from Canada!

Amazing! This is the only type of tea I drink. How do I know it is authentic? Thanks so much for sharing

Thank you for watching! That’s a great question, but I don’t think there’s a fixed answer to it. I have tried fake smoked Lapsang tea with friends who are experienced in tea, and ironically we all agreed that it tasted amazing, until we came across the real one. It’s really hard to distinguish, but there are many things to consider, price, mouthfeel, taste, etc. I think one of the best ways is to know the source and compare side by side.
