There is just something about a banged up, taped up lens ... I always feel like whoever's gear is really worn out, they truly love it. Truly use it and are not afraid to take it out into the field. Sure, there are people who have pristine lenses and only shoot indoors, but I think cameras and lenses have a war photographer soul and yearn to be on the field.
I love the way you explain things, it's easy to understand. I'm getting the 5Diii soon with the 70-200 f2.8 and a sigma 24-35 f2. I was thinking of getting the 24-70 but now I think imma get the 85 f1.2 and the 50 f1.2 aswell. Thank you!
Finally, a photographer that actually takes QUALITY photos. Thank so much for your videos. You have a new subscriber. Keep doing what you’re doing. Your photos are actually good, unlike most of the photo gear “reviewers” on CZcams.
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it 😊
2 years late here but I agree SO MUCH. Most gear reviews scares me away from literally getting everything on the market because their sample photos just look horrid
So gregarious, very down to earth even when Julia is speaking about the little accidents she had. Nice pace, clear and direct. Thanks for verifying many facts. Nice video Julia.
I really enjoyed your video Julia , i really liked the way you explained your thoughts....you were honest about how you felt about your lens which is a huge help for people trying to pick the right lens for them xx
Thanks again :)
You have all the lenses on my wish list. Can’t wait to get a few of those.
This video is an excellent summary of the photographer's views on the various lenses she uses - one word of caution - the Samyang 24 mm tilt and shift Ms Trotti finds very useful for certain effects is very competitively priced (Canon's Mark II 24mm TSE is well over 2 times the price) but if it is put to one of its principal purposes - architectural photography - its performance is less than stellar. Perhaps for the effects Ms Trotti wants to achieve it is fine - however the one I have in my possession exhibits noticeable barrel distortion - others have reported the same thing - it could be down to quality control as some have found their Samyang to be perfectly fine (and, in any case, it may be very satisfactory for the type of things Ms Trotti wishes to achieve). Anyone serious about architectural photography should think about the Canon Mark II 24mm TSE (or the Nikon equivalent) - it's very expensive - anyone doing photography for a living (I'm just an "amateur") can probably set the cost of their photographic equipment against tax - the Samyang tilt and shift was generally well received on its introduction (due to its extremely competitive pricing) and Samyang make many very high quality products - do your own research - I only offer the evidence of my own eyes as regards my experience with the particular one I purchased.
I recently came across your videos and think they're great. Very informative and well produced!
Thank you for the help with the lenses. I just started getting into photography and I have a basic lens. I was looking to see what would be the next lens to purchase and you helped me out.👍🏼
Love the way you explain things. So easy to understand and not boring.
Thank you so much!
Love your videos, very helpful and interesting 👏🌸
I love it !. Obsessed on your vids
You have helped me soo much! I love your videos they have so much information in them and your photography work is stunning 😍😍 thank you!
Thank you so much! 💛
Really nice review and explanation of the lenses!! :D have been thinking about the 35mm and the 85mm for a long time now, this surely helped me decide :D
You should be in front of the camera all the time, you have such a natural beauty! Perfection!
Tilt shift lenses are sooo dope for creative shots 😩😩 you should make a video with it!
I'm going to! :D
Very informative, and I loved seeing the photos that you have produced with each lens.
I enjoyed your video. Your subject for your 85mm1.2 is beautiful, it doesn’t matter what the back ground looks like, you’ll get beautiful photos anyway.
Such a good Video for beginner like me wo dont understand when to use which lens and why. Searched a lot about it and the Video is top 3!!
I love your videos ,I'm a beginner at photography and I have been learning a lot with your videos thank you very much.
Very useful, Julia. Thanks
Great video, I love my 35mm lens for street photography and 50mm for portraits :)
Thanks so much!
Very helpful! Thank you! Love your videos
Thank you!
Thanks a lot, you make me think about buying just prime instead of the 24-70
I love the 35mm Sigma Art and the Canon 135mm F2 😍
My only two lenses! Glad I'm not the only.
Greetings from NZ. I’m finding myself using my 35mm a lot lately. Glad to hear I’m not alone in this thinking. Nice images.
Hi , great sample pictures . You're really talented !
I don't understand why you don't have 100k+ subscribers yet! Your videos are great and very informative.
Aw thank you!! 💛
Thank you for this very informative video. I only miss some photos you've made with your last lens - the Samyang tilt shift lens. I think I understood what you ment but it would have been easier to follow if you could have provided same sample with the bokeh bottom and upper parts of the picture. Nevertheless great review. Greetings from the island of Crete in Greece.
such beauty behind the lens... i am swooned
Great, thanks Julia. I completely agree about primes versus zooms. I do have a 70-200 but rarely use it. I find it much more enjoyable to use the prime and work for the shot. Best.
Thank you so much!
Hi JT loved the vdo .... nicely explained... looking forward to see more of you ....All the best ..... Love 👍🤘😘
Thanks! This video was so helpful! As you talked a lot about wedding photography... Maybe you could do a video about that!? I am super interested in how you prepare yourself for a wedding and if you maybe have some tips!
Yes! I'm planning on doing quite a few videos about wedding photography in the near future :D
Julia Trotti soo cool! I am looking forward to them!
i can listen to you all day
First of all I love your videos! What monitor do you use or recommed on a budget and then Mac vs non. Also sharpest Canon lens for portraits you recommend. Thank you for all you do, your tutorials. Love you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! I've been using iMacs to edit for the last 8+ years, so the last time I used a non mac screen was wayyy too long ago to be able to give a good recommendation. I love using the 5K iMac screen though, it's been great for my workflow for the past few years. Out of the L series lenses I have I love my Canon 35 1.4 II the most and feel like it's the sharpest. I haven't tried RF primes yet, but the 50 and 85 always get a lot of love - I'm going to see if I can borrow them soon to make some review videos about 😊
Also your shift/tilt lens can make perfect three shot panoramic captures!
Great review, I did a period of shooting with primes at weddings, it was hard and I missed some good shots. Completely agree about zooming with your feet for better composition. I think I was just a bit lazy and went with classic 24-70 and 70-200 2.8. Now I am older I think I will get back the primes L collection ready for my grand kids! Great insight keep up with the videos
Happy Valentines Julia! :) You are very beautiful and pretty here in this video! :) :)
Thank you so much! And Happy Valentines day to you as well :)
Great video! I love my 100mm Macro L lens 😁
Thanks for the video! I just bought the 100 macro and it’s sooooo versatile as well. Phenomenal compression but also great on macro like for rings etc. Also have 85 1.2, 50 1.2, 100-400 ii, 16-35, and Sigma 24-105. Hard not to take all of them all the time.
Ah that's awesome, I need to give the 100 a go! And I agree, it's hard to decide what to take to a shoot sometimes!
Good one, thanks Julia..
This video is really up to an update. I would love to know how your collection has evolved now that you are shooting more with Sony :)
Learning photography. Really like your videos. You are very informative!
Do you use uv/lens protectors or do you feel they are not neccessary or take away from quality of photo?
Gotta add the Sigma 40 1.4 for the Cine-wide look!
Wow, that is a great point about moving around. I never thought about it, but I do move a lot less when I use my 70-200 compared to my 50 or my 16-35
I'm glad you liked that point! It was honestly a game changer for me in portrait photography when I started using primes 😊
yeahh the 35 is my fav lens too.
I've gone towards the Sigma Art as well, I have have 2 primes & a zoom: 20mm, 50mm & 24-105mm
They are nice! Still have the trusty 50mm f/1.8 and a 100mm Macro L
Great video and lens line up!
Here's my current line
24mm f2.8 stm (for crop)
35mm f1.4L mark 1
50mm f1.8 stm (great value lens everybody must own)
45mm f1.8 VC Tamron ( my main 50-ish lens. best valued lens imho)
100mm f2.8 Macro (for details)
135mm f2
24-105mm f4L IS mark 1(for run and gun video)
All lenses give me good focus on your hair, marvelous ;)
Thanks for this video. When you got started shooting models, did you come up with a concept for each shoot first?
Glad you liked it! I used to do very conceptual shoots back when I first started, so yes. Now I prefer to keep things really natural, so I build a shoot idea around what location we are using on the day :)
I currently only have 2 camera pieces - my heavy Nikon DSLR with the 18-200mm 5.6, which is great for long distance street photo or stuff like that, but because I am mostly a portrait photographer so I really want to buy the 50mm 1.8. I havent decided if I'll buy it yet, but I think I will. Your videos are amazing, keep going! Great photographer too, ur my number one if I need some inspiration for my work. Thanks!
I do have Canon 50mm but literally I'm suck in it taking that great depth looking Sharp photos or portrait or maybe I don't have knowledge to use can you please guide how can I take better photos with this lens Canon 50mm 1.4f
Btw hi, how are you. 😊☺️🙂
If you don't want those depth photos, you could try shooting at a higher aperture or get your model/subject to stand closer to the background that you're photographing in :) That way you'll have less of the bokeh/shallow depth of field look!
TechRadicalTv iii
I find your observation between shooting with Primes versus your Zoom very revealing and I can see how the nature of the zoom lens can intrude into the spontaneity of the moment of capture.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked that point :)
You must be pretty rich to have all the Canon’s major L series prime lenses. :) well it’s a lovely one-stop detailed video for anybody who is going to start his career as a professional wedding/fashion photographer and planning to buy the prime lenses. Hope Canon acknowledges their loyal customers like you.
I'm glad you liked the video! :)
I only have 4 prime lenses for my digital cameras, the rest are zoom three of which are 3rd party and I have no complaints about them. But nearly all my analogue lens are prime and I never use zooms, mainly because zooms of yesteryear were pretty poor. My food and macro shots are usually taken with my Canon f2.8 L Macro. My landscape and wildlife shots are on zoom lens, but a 600mm f4 prime is too expensive to use infrequently. I like how all your lenses are well thought out and not bought because of G.A.S.. Another great video
This was very interesting! And you look so so pretty 😁😀
Georgina Trotti +1
Indeed she does in this dark, warm-brown milieu :)
Thank you!!
Totally agree, Julia is beautiful!
this was an very interesting video and she explained it really great and the photos were awesome. but why it is important how she looks? i watch a lot of videos from guys and no user ever told him "wow, you are pretty". why is this important?
G'day Julia! I found your channel this weekend and I find it really entertaining and helpful! First, let me thank you for showing me around the glass house in Poznan, PL that I have never visited (despite it used to be my home town :)). Secondly, you live in my second most loved city on this planet, which is Sydney. And finally, I absolutely love your Australian articulation :D Please let me know whenever you guys visit Poland / Warsaw again, it would be great to meet and learn from you. I love your style and the way you explain your craft.. :)
Thank you so much!!
The 35mm 1.4 was my first “expensive” lens. Since moving to the RF mount, I mostly use the 35mm 1.8 RF, but the 1.4 is a gem
I love your videos❤️❤️
Thank you!
Great info! You look so much like Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly :)
Wow. You rave about the 35mm 1.4L mk i. I've had that lens for over a year and I've only used it once, on one summer evening! I never really cared much for it.
So as a canon shooter, I’ve been hearing way too many raving reviews on the sigma art lenses on how they’re the sharpest lenses around, I was wondering what your thoughts on switching over was. Really like your vids btw!
Personally, I haven't had a super amazing experience with my Sigma 24mm to make me want to switch over completely, as it tends to miss focus, compared to my Canon L lenses which are always sharp! I would love to test out more Sigma lenses though and create some hands on reviews and comparisons :)
I have an 80d and am trying to improve my photography before upgrading to a full frame and better lenses. what do you think about the 24mm sigma lens instead of spending the money on the canon? Have you tried both brands? I would like to have a 35mm but with the crop sensor it would be more of a 56mm
Hi Julia...I absolutely love your channel. I discovered it in the last few months, basically when I decided to take photography more seriously. I had a question, if you could please help me out...I have a Canon 70D and dont have the budget for a good quality full frame camera so I am thinking of expanding my lens collection as opposed to buying a new body. I purchased a Canon EF 50mm lens (F1.8) a few months back and I absolutely love it. I am trying to go for full frame lenses because when I do buy a full frame camera, I dont want the lenses to go to waste. Now I am thinking of buying a sigma art lens but I am unable to figure out if those are made for cropped sensors or full sensors and if they work either way...I basically am into portrait and fashion photography and am looking for sharp photos with a good aperture so that low light situations can be handled better on my cropped sensor camera. Thank you! :)
i love you so much and I hope that I can be able to shoot like you someday!!
Thank you! Just keep practicing and you'll get there in no time 😊
I use zooms the way I use prime lenses, I guess because I'm used to prime lenses. When I use the 24-70 2.8 ii, I set it to what kind of look I want, I use 35mm a lot on it, I have a 35mm prime and I use 35mm a lot on the 16-35. I really like that 135 F/2L, you might not think it's as beautiful because you're taking similar shots with it that you're taking with your 85 and 50. Don't look at it that way. Only take one person shots where you want that background separation and it looks amazing. My copy is razor sharp on the 5D Mark IV.
100mm F/2 is my go to portrait lens. I actually went to the NON L series version over the L series. I owned the L series but I actually preferred the Non L series as it lets in an extra stop of light. It's really a hidden gem outside the L line. So is the 35mm F/2 IS. The new 35mm L series is extremely sharp. I like to stay at 35mm for a lot of stuff. I am a hybrid shooter too, so I keep a 16-35 F/4 IS and other IS lenses for hand held video and the crop factor on the 5D Mark IV.
I have a 24-70 tamron lens but I notice at 24mm it has trouble focusing. I also wanna get the 35mm and may trade my 24-70 for it thanks for the video.
Beautiful photo
Please can you show us some pics you got with the tilt sift lens?? I'm dying to see...
Great video!
Ahhh I didn't include any! Sorry! This is my wedding photography website, there are a few photos in this blog post I took with the Tilt Shift, my favourite one that shows really well what the Tilt Shift can do is the very last picture of the post: swoonweddings.com.au/index/#/claire-marcus-kangaroo-valley-bush-retreat/
Julia Trotti wow, these pics are gorgeous, Julia! Thanks for sharing!
I sold my Canon 85mm 1.8 and waiting to get the new Canon 85mm 1.4L IS.
Awesome video as always. 👍🏼
Ultrarmx ditto
bro get that and rock...
Ooh so exciting! I really want to test out the 85 IS and see how it compares to the 85 1.2! And thank you :)
Julia What a great video, as always... besides your knowledge about photography your videos are awesome, I would say if you use one more light in the background just like a color one to give some (live) there, I hope you get what I mean. anyway thanks for sharing everything about your lens, I am trying to get the 85mm, but I actually have a Canon 70D, so I'm not sure if save a little more and get a 5Dmkiv or invest in lens, what would you recommend?, I actually only have the 50mm f1.8. Thanks Again :)
Dreamer 305 if you have to chose always go lens man! The glass is what makes the picture. I went 60 with L lenses for awhile and it looked soooo good. Unless you need crazy iso or super fast burst fps then invest in the lens
Remy Lee just ordering the a7riii. Can’t wait to get it. The best hybrid for video/photo at a pro level for both
Thanks man! I've always been thinking about getting a better lens instead a new camera. Really appreciate your reply!
That's awesome man! I use Canon, haven't tried Sony but hope you get it soon!
Dreamer 305 got the 85 recently, really great lense. As somebody before already said, always go with the glass and only get a new camera if you reach a dead end with yours. For example I love to shoot at evening and the 80D wasn't cutting it for me in low light, so I got a 5DMKIII.
As for the 85: really great lense all around, but keep in mind that it is limited in use. For Portraits I don't see anything that is better, but if you're not going to do portraits that often it hardly gets good use, especially being even longer on your APSC Camera. I'd recommend the 24-70 2.8 II as another lense that you really should consider if you want premium glass. It's super versatile, even on APSC, really great in almost everything so it's the one lense I always bring when I can only use One and it does portraits pretty well too, even compared to the 85.
And you can get it for less than the 85 1.4 used or just a bit more expensive than the 85 (like 200€) new.
I hope I could help you with your decision. Let me know which you end up getting :)
Great Job.
Hi Julia!
I have a question, I follow all your videos, and they are amazing!
I want to buy a 35mm f1.4 but I don't know which one... I don't have so much money for buying a Canon 35mm mkII, so I'm thinking about Canon 35mm mkI or Sigma 35mm ART, do you have any suggest?
Hi, could you make a photoshoot with a 135mm lens in future? :) Thanks and keep going, your work is TOP. :)
Yes that's such a great idea!! And thank you!
Great collection of lenses for every occasion.
I have always wondered why are there no male models in any of the portraits EVER shot by anyone! 😂
Haha, just kidding.
Amazing!
I just found your channel. Congratulations you're videos are great! thank you for sharing and teach. what ethnicity are you?
Thanks for this great video!
Beginner question: Do you have protective filters on the lenses, or nothing at all? I always have protection on them cause I'm scared of the lens being damaged, but I am wondering if that makes the quality of the photos worse?
Very good question. I would like to know the answer to that too.
Thank you! I have UV filters on all my lenses, simply to protect them! I have a video I'm releasing soon all about UV filters and I have some instances where this came in really handy :D I personally don't see a difference in quality of the photos. As long as your UV filters are in good condition (eg, not covered in scratches, not dusty, etc) and they are mid to high quality filters you shouldn't have an issue with quality of photos!
@@juliatrotti Just wondering if you've released your UV filter video yet? :D If not, would you be able to recommend any filter brand/model? I'm also looking to get some to protect my lenses!
Awesome video 👌
i was not watching Julia but the kitty behind her :D
great..thanks for sharing...im just switching to full frame so ive just started selling my un-used crop sensor lenses .. ive got a 50mm F1.4 & an 85mm F1.8 ... all I need is a good 35mm F1.4 .. Im waiting for sigma to bring out a Sony emount version ..apparantly this spring as Ive seen the quality of there lenses & theyre great...
Thanks for watching! Ah that's awesome, enjoy your new full frame camera!! And you're going to love having a 35mm when you get your hands on it 😄
I have a kit lense 16mil to 70 on and planning to get a prime lense and I love to capture to portrait with background not just the person I shoot... What do you think about it and I'm confused between 24 mil and 35 mil
I found myself liking more Sigma lenses than Canon, not only because of the lower prices but i just like the look more. As far as me mainly being a Canon shooter is it a bad thing to have more Sigma lenses than Canon lenses?
It's not a bad thing at all, I always recommend to use what you prefer!
hi , beautiful set of lenses , and you have a beautiful model too always called Julia ;) , you know it , will you release a tutorial how do you work with light ,colors and shadows ? my favorite is the 35 canon ♥ , by the way you
Aw thank you so much! Yes, I definitely want to create more tutorials about working with lighting and colours. I'm going to be working on some very soon!
Would love to know what your settings and post-processing were for the shots at 5:26-5:33. Such beautiful, vibrant images with tasty bokeh!
Thank you so much! I always use my Lightroom Presets to edit my photos! I don't have the exact preset I used for those pictures, but this LA Preset is very similar: www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets/#/la-lightroom-preset/ :)
Hi Julia,
I currently have a Rebel T3i that i’m learning on. I recently got a 50mm f1.8 however i feel for indoor portraits i may need another lens. For someone on a budget which lens would you recommend? P.s. Really enjoying your videos!
Personally, I feel like the 50mm series is the best value for quality lens you can get in terms of primes. I only had a 50mm 1.4 for about a year or 2 and used it for all types of photography - fashion, weddings, events, studio, indoors and outdoors! Being a 1.8 lens, it should be fine to use indoors as the wider aperture compared to a zoom lets more light into your photo :)
Awesome shots! 5:27
Thank you!
Against me! replacement looks always good!
Dzien dobry :) A good vid again Julia. It was a self fulfilling prophecy wilth Sigma :) You decided to buy cheaper and as it is not so good, you automatically use it less. Problem with AF in sigma... yes, sigmas' AF are a bit slow generally, i have noticed it myself. A great observation about working with primes as opposed to zooms. My brain works quite differently with primes vs. zooms ... It is etched in my brain which prime i have on my camera and all thinking about framing is tuned for it. I have that T/S Samyang too. A good lens and ridiculously cheap for a T/S. Actually it is not so good for architecture as it has a fair amount of barrel distortion, but the faux "bokeh" is indeed breathtaking.
Dziękuję! Well the story with the Sigma is that I only wanted to get it for a few wide angle shots at a wedding. So I knew I wasn’t going to be using it all the time regardless of the focusing issues! If it was a lens I was going to rely on, I definitely would have gotten a Canon :) That’s a really interesting observation about how you work with prime lenses! And yes, I love the TS lens as well, I just really need to take it out and use it a lot more! Thanks again for your comment!
How do you like the quality of the Samyang? I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s soft and that it sometimes “slips.” However, I’m really interested in a TS lens (I shoot Sony).
Cool!
Cute kitty behind!👍
Hello! I like your videos!)) Could you please give me a piece of advice? )) I have a standard canon 18-55 lens (body 750d), and I'd like to change it to a more high-aperture one. I take pictures of my kid, she is always in motion, often at home, where the lighting is weak and I have to turn up the iso to freeze motion at a short shutter speed. As a result, the quality of the photo is awful. And I also like taking pictures of landscapes, but this happens from time to time. What lens would you advise to buy? Now I consider the canon 35 mm f2, it is not cheap, so I don’t want to regret it later. Is this fix lens suitable for portrait and landscape shooting, as well as for video? Or it's better to by sigma 17-50 as more universal? Thanks a lot!
The most honest comment about how u feel the 24mm is vs the canon version
Did you buy the lenses NEW, or are they used (pre-owned) ? Would be great a video about used lenses.
I've gotten all my lenses new except for one, I'll see what kind of video I could make about this :)
Get the new 35 mark ii it's worthy upgrade. I almost never take it off my camera unless I have to. even got a back up but I might sell that for the new 85 1.4
I'm going to hire it first and see how I like it! I'm sure I'll upgrade to it in the near future though :D
Hi @Juliatrotti . can you explain what settings are you using when you are shooting in 50mm lens? one shot, Al servo ..stops... etc? I will appreciate it.
I have a detailed video about how I focus here: czcams.com/video/t1eVrLjdCzA/video.html&t in case you're interested to see! I use this method with all my lenses :)
Thank you for your reply!!!
I have a doubt I am using a Nikon 610 and I like canon 70-200 f2.8 lens in my Nikon body is it possible?
Just buy a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 or similar
I have a friend that shoots the Nikon 70-200 and they love it, but I don’t know if they make a non IS version.
not true. You can adapt nikon glass to any camera, but because of the flange distance of nikon bodies-lenses you can't adapt other system glass to nikon.
You can use an adapter but, you probably won’t be able to use the autofocus feature on the lens. If you like to use manual focus then it shouldn’t be a problem
I can confirm that the Canon 70-200 is a fantastic lens, however I've never tried using it on a Nikon body. My best advice would be to pop into your local camera store and ask them for some advice! They may also be able to let you test out what a Nikon body with a Canon lens would look like too if you ask :) I used to do that all the time when trying to decide what lenses to get! Hope that helps 😊
