      For portraits, fast 35mm is always in my bag. Very versatile and I only need to set the brightest aperture to have background blur. For wider angle, I would prefer a 16-35 than a 24mm prime.
      Only if I'm in a field like in the video, I choose tighter lenses to get nicer bokeh. But for many situations, a 35mm with large openings will always be my first to consider. My very favorite.

I am about to get my very first camera which is the Canon EOS 80D with the kit lens (18-135mm). My question is though: Is it also good enough for portrait shots with cool bokeh in the background or should I get an additional objective like the Canon 50mm 1.8 for 100 bucks? It would be very nice of you of you could help me out on these matters.

      @kikipratama1 Před 5 lety +1

      @@O.G.H. Hi there, 80D is a great all-rounder cameras whether you shoot portraits, sports, and some video. That 50mm 1.8 is everybody's first prime and it's great.
      Keep in mind that that the bokeh won't be as soft as shown in the video or against a big sensor camera like (6D, 5D, 1D, R, etc.) since you have to step back further and lose your blur.
      There can be a lot to discuss but if you love JUST portraits and less video, perhaps the old 6D plus that 50/1.8 might wow you more, and you can forget the kit lens for a while since the 50mm will be more versatile on a full sensor.

But then I learned about the 135 and it's completely blurred my head. I prefer the pictures you can get from the 135, but I feel that it's a niche lens because of its length and usability whereas the 85 seems more versatile overall. When it comes to the portrait shots, the 135 lens is the ideal choice, since it is like the proper lens for this. The 85 lens also works, too. Perspective distortion definitely shows up on the other 3 lenses. Especially, the the 24 lens, since you really have to get up close, putting the nose of the subject much closer to the lens than the ears are. It's called the "Dog Nose" effect. With the 135 (even the 85), you're back so far from the subject, the nose isn't that much closer to the lens at that distance. And definitely, don't use a telephoto lens set at 300mm or more. The subject in the portrait will look flat. Very good choice on lenses for this video. Well explained.

    I agree. I love the 85 and 135. My first 85 was the 85 1.8 which is an amazing budget lens. It was the first lens that produced photos that my friends gasped at how good the photos were. It made me feel like a pro. I've since moved on to the sublime Canon 85 1.4 which has image stabilization and better image quality. The negative is you need a lot of space to maneuver. And the super negative is a lot of people want group shots which is very hard with the 85. I'm impressed with your 85 1.2 shots. I found that lens very challenging to get really sharp images, especially wide open. I never considered the 135 because I found the 85 was already challenging to use in limited space, but now I'll consider it. But I have 2 lenses in my queue that I want to consider first: the new 70-200 coming out for the RF mount as well as the 100mm macro. I don't own any macro lenses but would love to have one.

    Another awesome video, Love your work! My current Prime line up is the 35mm 1.4 ii, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.4, 100mm 2.8, and the 135 2.0 and I love them all. Really hard to pick one because each one has its own style and use on a photo shoot. If I had to pick, thinking back on my vacations and the kit I bring along, it would be the 35mm and the 85mm, as well as the often forgot about gem, the 24-105mm f4 ii.

      With the APSC crop factor, you'd be fairly safe to think of the lenses looking like the next longer focal length. (Focal length) x 1.5 = (APCS cropped equivalent). ie: 24=36, 35=52.5, 50=75, etc. Slightly over simplified but a good starting point on how to think of it.

    If I only take one lens with me somewhere, I usually take a 60 mm f/2.8 manual focus macro lens. I shoot APS-C. If I want to take more than one lens, the 135 mm f/3.5 (also a manual lens) is the second lens in my bag. I rarely shoot any wider than 50 mm. Great video by the way. I gotta say I love the 35 most! I recently purchased a sigma 35 1.4 for canon and LOVE it! Imo It offers the wide-angle of a 24mm without the distortion- so you can still incorporate a lot of landscape into your portraits if that’s something you like. I don’t like Telephotos as much because 1) I like being close to the subject and 2) it’s harder to really incorporate the scene. Great video!

    Hi Julia! At 02:21 how do you get the entire model's features super sharp even with a shallow DOF? Is it just because of how far you are from the model? I always have these problems when the model starts moving around. :( Also thanks to your videos I finally decided to go for the Canon 5D Mark IV next year and the 35mm as my 1st full-frame! :D

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  Před 5 lety +4

      With a 24 and 35 you have a little more leeway with what's in focus at a shallow dof because it's a wider angle lens, it also has to do with the way I'm shooting, I try to shoot for hip height to the model as her head and feet will be at a very similar distance away from my lens leading to everything being in focus. If I were to shoot on the 35 at 1.4 and I was standing up straight and pointing the camera down, her head and torso would be sharp but it would start getting out of focus closer towards her feet because of the angle of my lens/camera. Hope that helps!

      I disagree, you need wider lenses for environment portraits and especially when getting full body shots indoors - when you don't have much space. The 24mm might be too wide, but I think the 35mm is just enough.

    • @PavelR2

      2.8 vs 1.4 is full 2 stops difference + IQ is not on par between modern 85 and any 24-70. 24-70 is better option only in the situations in which there is no room to use longer FL - studio for example or somebody looks for wide shot. There is still better to use prime for the available BG separation or to get better IQ.
