Acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) is a disease with rapid onset, outbreak and epidemic potential, and high rates of mortality and morbidity [1,2]. Considerable advances have been made in the last 30âyears towards epidemic management and disease control through vaccination, and understanding the contributions of both host and pathogen to clinical outcomes. In this review, we will summarise the rapidly changing epidemiology of ABM in the context of new vaccines. We will show how new unbiased genomics technologies are revealing specific host-pathogen interactions that cause inflammation and brain damage. Additionally, we will summarise which new adjunctive treatments are in development and describe how the current Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus2 (SARS-CoV2) pandemic may impact on the WHO's efforts to defeat meningitis by 2030.
